Who decides the itinerary during a yacht charter?

Answer

The itinerary is normally developed collaboratively between the charterer, broker and captain, but the captain has ultimate responsibility for the safe navigation and operation of the yacht.

Guests can express where they would like to go, what they would like to see and how they would like to spend their time. The captain will then consider those preferences alongside weather, sea conditions, navigation, local regulations, marina availability and the yacht's operational limitations.

The best itineraries are therefore usually flexible rather than completely fixed.

Analysis

The captain's role is particularly important because a yacht charter is a moving maritime experience rather than a conventional land-based holiday. Conditions can change quickly, and a good captain may recommend changing the plan to improve safety or the guest experience.

Broker Comment

Tell us what you want to experience rather than giving us only a list of ports. A good captain can often create a much better week by adjusting the itinerary around weather, local knowledge and the interests of the guests.
