What size yacht should I charter for my group?

Short answer

The appropriate yacht size depends on guest numbers, cabin requirements, desired space, itinerary, crew, budget and the type of onboard experience you want. Guest capacity alone should not determine the choice.

Answer

There is no universal yacht size that is right a 30–40 metre yacht, while another group of eight may prefer a significantly larger yacht because they want more deck space, particularly important. The number of guests a yacht is legally permitted to accommodate may not tell primarily for relaxed cruising between nearby anchorages may have very different characteristics from one selected for a particular number of guests.

A group of eight might be extremely comfortable on a 30–40 metre yacht, while another group of eight may prefer a significantly larger yacht because they want more deck space, extensive water toys, multiple entertaining areas or greater separation between guest and crew areas.

Cabin configuration is particularly important. The number of guests a yacht is legally permitted to accommodate may not tell you whether the sleeping arrangements suit your group.

You should also consider the itinerary. A yacht intended primarily for relaxed cruising between nearby anchorages may have very different characteristics from one selected for longer passages.

The broker should therefore consider guest composition + cabin requirements + itinerary + experience expectations + budget, rather than simply matching the number of guests to yacht length.

Broker insight

A common mistake is to specify "we need a 50-metre yacht" before explaining how the yacht will actually be used. The better starting point is the experience and requirements, then finding the appropriate yacht.
