What is the difference between anchoring and mooring?

Answer

Anchoring generally involves the yacht deploying its own anchor onto the seabed. Mooring involves securing the yacht to a fixed or designated mooring system.

Both can keep a yacht securely positioned, but their availability and suitability depend on the destination and local arrangements.

Some protected areas restrict conventional anchoring and require yachts to use designated moorings.

Analysis

The distinction can be important when planning a charter because a destination may offer beautiful bays but have specific rules governing how yachts can remain there.

Broker’s advice

You don’t need to know the technical details before chartering. What’s useful is telling us whether you prefer marinas, secluded anchorages or a mixture. We can then build the itinerary around the type of experience you want.
