How much should I plan my yacht charter itinerary in advance?

Answer

It is useful to have a broad itinerary in mind before the charter, but there is usually little benefit in planning every hour of the week in advance.

Before booking, you should establish the destinations, cruising area, embarkation and disembarkation points and the experiences that are most important to you. Once onboard, the captain can help refine the itinerary around weather, sea conditions, local knowledge and guest preferences.

Some destinations require more advance planning because popular anchorages, marinas, restaurants or permits may have limited availability.

Analysis

The ideal level of planning depends on the destination and charter style. Over-planning can remove some of the spontaneity that makes yacht charter attractive, while under-planning can mean missing experiences that require reservations or advance arrangements.

Broker Comment

We normally suggest identifying your priorities rather than trying to script the entire week. Tell us the places, experiences and restaurants you care about, and leave some flexibility for the captain to optimise the itinerary once onboard.
