Are shoes allowed on a yacht?

Answer

It depends on the yacht. Many yachts operate a barefoot policy, particularly on the main deck and interior, while others permit specific soft-soled, non-marking shoes.

The reason is primarily to protect delicate deck surfaces and interior finishes. Outdoor shoes, dark-soled shoes and footwear that could mark or damage the deck are generally unsuitable.

Guests should follow the individual yacht's instructions rather than assuming that normal footwear is acceptable.

Options / distinctions

Barefoot yachts: shoes are removed when boarding. –

Yacht shoes: some yachts permit clean, non-marking footwear. –

Trainers: may be acceptable if specifically approved. –

High heels: generally unsuitable on deck. –

Shore shoes: should normally be kept separate from onboard footwear.

Analysis

Footwear policy is a small but important example of how yachts differ. It is worth knowing before arrival because the policy can affect what you pack and how you use the yacht.

We'll tell you the yacht's specific footwear policy before you travel. If in doubt, bring a pair of clean, soft-soled shoes that have not been worn outdoors.
