Is it cheaper to anchor than to stay in a marina?

Answer

Anchoring can avoid marina berth charges, but the decision is not simply about cost.

The captain may choose an anchorage because it provides a better experience, greater privacy or easier access to swimming and water activities. Conversely, a marina may be preferable for access to a town, restaurants, shore facilities or when weather conditions make anchoring less suitable.

Any applicable local anchoring restrictions also need to be considered.

Analysis

A yacht charter itinerary should balance experience, convenience, safety and cost rather than treating marina fees as the only consideration.

Some destinations also have particularly expensive or highly sought-after berths, making advance planning important.

Broker’s advice

We don’t generally recommend an itinerary simply because it is cheaper. If a marina gives you wonderful access to a town you want to explore, it may be worth the expense. Equally, a spectacular anchorage may be the better experience.
