Are motor yachts more stable than sailing yachts?

Answer

There is no universal rule that motor yachts are always more stable than sailing yachts. Stability and motion depend on the yacht’s size, hull design, displacement, beam, stabilisation system and sea conditions.

Many larger motor yachts use active stabilisation systems, while sailing yachts have different characteristics that can affect how they move underway.

The individual yacht is therefore more important than the category alone.

Analysis

Guests concerned about motion should compare actual yachts rather than assuming that choosing a motor yacht automatically solves the issue.

The intended cruising area is also important because sheltered coastal waters can feel very different from exposed passages.

Broker’s advice

If motion is a significant concern, we’ll compare the actual yachts rather than simply saying “motor yacht” or “sailing yacht.” The details of the vessel and itinerary matter much more.
