Should I choose a sailing yacht or a motor yacht for my charter?

Answer

Neither is universally better; the choice depends on the experience you want, your itinerary and your group.

Motor yachts generally offer greater cruising speed and can make longer distances easier within a short charter. Sailing yachts offer a different experience centred around sailing, connection with the sea and the character of sailing under wind power, although they can also motor when required.

The layout, stability, accommodation, draft, water toys, crew and intended cruising area should also be considered.

Analysis

The distinction is experiential as much as technical. A guest who wants to explore several widely separated destinations may have different priorities from someone who wants a relaxed week sailing between anchorages.

Broker comment

Rather than starting with “motor or sailing?”, we normally start with “what do you want the week to feel like?” Once we understand that, the yacht type often becomes much clearer.
