Can a yacht charter broker negotiate the charter price?

Answer

A broker can communicate a client's offer or negotiate commercial terms with the yacht's representative, but there is no guarantee that an owner will accept a discount.

Negotiation can depend on factors such as the yacht's availability, timing, season, demand, length of charter, itinerary and the owner's commercial position.

The value of negotiation is not necessarily limited to reducing the headline rate. Other commercial terms may sometimes be relevant.

Analysis

A yacht that is heavily booked may have little incentive to discount, while an owner facing an unfilled period may have greater flexibility.

The broker's market knowledge can help establish whether an offer is realistic.

Broker Comment

We don't recommend negotiating simply for the sake of getting a discount. We look at the yacht's circumstances and the client's position and, where there is a genuine basis for negotiation, put forward a credible offer.
