What is a yacht’s beam and why does it matter?

Answer

Beam is the yacht's maximum width. It is an important factor in the vessel's design, stability, interior volume and usable deck space.

A wider yacht can potentially provide more substantial living areas and broader decks, although the actual experience depends on the yacht's design and layout.

Beam can also affect where a yacht can comfortably operate or berth, particularly in constrained marinas or harbours.

Analysis

Beam is particularly useful when comparing yachts that are similar in length but have very different volumes and layouts.

If space is important to you, we look at the whole package—length, beam, GT, layout and outdoor areas. Specifications become much more meaningful when connected to how you intend to use the yacht.
