What happens if a storm is forecast during my yacht charter?

Answer

If significant weather is forecast, the captain will assess the conditions and determine whether the planned itinerary remains appropriate.

The yacht may remain in a sheltered location, move to a safer harbour or anchorage, alter the timing of a passage, or change the itinerary altogether.

The captain’s decisions are based on the safety of the guests, crew and yacht, as well as the practical conditions in the cruising area.

Analysis

A forecast does not automatically mean the charter stops. The response depends on the severity, timing and location of the weather and the yacht’s characteristics.

It is also possible for conditions to affect only part of an itinerary.

Broker’s advice

A good crew is constantly looking ahead rather than waiting for bad weather to arrive. If the forecast changes, they can often adjust the plan before conditions become problematic.
