How much cruising can a yacht realistically do in one day?

Answer

The practical cruising distance depends on the yacht’s speed, weather, sea conditions, route, fuel requirements and the type of holiday you want.

A fast motor yacht may be able to cover substantial distances during a day, while a sailing yacht may prioritise the sailing experience itself. Even on a fast yacht, spending many hours underway every day may not suit guests who want maximum time swimming, exploring ashore or relaxing at anchor.

Analysis

The fastest possible itinerary is not necessarily the most enjoyable one.

Cruising speed should therefore be considered alongside the desired pace of the charter.

Broker’s advice

When clients give us a list of five places they want to visit in seven days, we look at the distances between them. Sometimes everything fits comfortably; sometimes the better holiday is to remove one destination and spend more time actually enjoying the yacht and the places you visit.
