What is the difference between anchoring, mooring and staying in a marina?

Answer

Anchoring means the yacht uses its own anchor and equipment to hold position on the seabed. A mooring normally involves securing the yacht to a permanent or managed buoy. A marina stay involves entering a designated berth or dock with shore access and marina facilities.

Analysis

Each option creates a different charter experience. Anchoring generally offers the greatest sense of independence, moorings can provide a practical alternative where anchoring is restricted or unsuitable, and marinas provide the greatest convenience for accessing towns and services.

Broker comment

Don't choose an itinerary based purely on the terminology. Local conditions vary considerably, and the captain will determine what is appropriate on the day.
