How fast can a charter yacht travel?

Answer

A yacht’s speed depends on its design, propulsion system, size, hull form, sea conditions and operating requirements.

Motor yachts generally offer higher cruising speeds than sailing yachts, although there is considerable variation within both categories.

The important figures are usually cruising speed and range rather than maximum speed alone.

Analysis

Maximum speed is often a less useful chartering metric than cruising speed. A yacht’s comfortable and efficient cruising speed gives a better indication of how it can be used during a real itinerary.

Higher speed can also involve greater fuel consumption.

Broker’s advice

We’d normally focus on how quickly the yacht comfortably travels rather than its headline maximum speed. If speed matters because you want to cover a lot of coastline, we’ll look at cruising speed, range and fuel consumption together.
