What exactly is a private yacht charter?

Short answer

A private yacht charter is the exclusive hire of a yacht for a defined period, with the yacht, crew and itinerary arranged for your own group rather than shared with other guests.

Answer

A private yacht charter gives you exclusive use of a yacht for the duration of your charter. You and your chosen guests have the yacht to yourselves, with a professional crew operating the vessel and looking after the onboard experience.

Unlike a cruise ship or shared yacht experience, a private charter is generally flexible. Your itinerary can be planned around the destinations, anchorages, activities and pace you prefer, subject to the yacht's capabilities, local regulations, weather and the captain's judgement.

The charter price normally covers the use of the yacht and its crew for the agreed charter period. Depending on the yacht and contract, additional expenses such as fuel, food and beverages, port fees and certain other operating costs may be charged separately, often through an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA).

The experience is therefore best understood not simply as "renting a boat", but as arranging a private floating holiday with a yacht, professional crew, accommodation, transportation between destinations and a highly personalised onboard service.

Broker insight

The biggest misconception among first-time charterers is that the yacht itself is the entire product. In practice, the yacht, crew, itinerary and provisioning all interact to determine the experience. Two yachts of similar size can therefore provide very different charters.
