How do I choose the right yacht for a private charter?

Short answer

Choose a yacht based on the combination of your group, preferred destination, dates, cabin requirements, cruising style, onboard facilities, crew, budget and the type of experience you want—not simply yacht you intend to use the yacht. If you want to explore extensively, cruising speed and range may matter. If you expect to spend most of your size or weekly price.

Answer

The right yacht is the one that best matches the experience you want to have.

Start with the fundamentals: number of guests, preferred dates, destination and budget. Then consider cabin configuration, because two yachts of similar size can have very different layouts and sleeping arrangements.

Next consider how you intend to use the yacht. If you want to explore extensively, cruising speed and range may matter. If you expect to spend most of your time at anchor, outdoor spaces, water toys and swimming facilities may be more important.

The crew is another major consideration. Their experience, service style, languages, cuisine and reputation can materially influence the charter.

Finally, consider the yacht's age, condition, design, amenities and operational characteristics.

A good broker should narrow the market down to a manageable selection rather than simply presenting dozens of yachts.

Broker insight

The most expensive yacht is not necessarily the most suitable yacht. Likewise, the largest yacht is not automatically the best choice for a particular group.
