Can the captain refuse to follow an itinerary?

Answer

The captain has responsibility for the safe operation of the yacht and may therefore decline a route, destination or manoeuvre when conditions or other operational considerations make it unsafe or impractical.

Guest preferences remain an important part of itinerary planning, but they cannot override the captain’s professional responsibilities or applicable maritime requirements.

Analysis

This distinction is fundamental to private yacht charter: the yacht is a luxury holiday environment, but it remains a vessel operated under professional command.

Broker’s advice

We encourage clients to see the captain as part of the experience, not simply as someone who drives the yacht. Their local knowledge and judgement can be invaluable, particularly when conditions change.
