How fast does a charter yacht travel?

Source version 1

Answer

A yacht's cruising speed depends on its design, propulsion system, sea conditions and operating requirements.

Motor yachts can range from relatively slow, fuel-efficient displacement yachts to much faster semi-displacement and planing yachts. Sailing yachts generally travel at lower speeds under normal cruising conditions, although their performance varies considerably between designs.

For charter planning, the important number is not necessarily the yacht's maximum speed. It is the speed the yacht is expected to cruise at during a normal itinerary.

Cruising speed affects:

How far the yacht can travel each day –

Fuel consumption –

Time available at destinations –

The number of locations you can realistically visit –

The overall character of the charter

Broker perspective

A yacht advertised with a high maximum speed does not necessarily mean that your charter itinerary will be operated at that speed. We look at realistic cruising times when designing an itinerary.

Answer

A yacht's cruising speed varies considerably according to its design, size, propulsion system and intended use.

Motor yachts generally cruise faster than sailing yachts, but their published maximum speed is not necessarily the speed at which they will normally travel during a charter. Cruising speed is the more useful figure when planning an itinerary.

Sea conditions, fuel consumption, passenger comfort and the captain's judgement can also affect the actual speed.

Analysis

Maximum speed can be an impressive specification but may have little relevance to a relaxed charter. A yacht's normal cruising speed, range and fuel consumption are more useful when determining how practical an itinerary will be.

Broker Comment

When clients want to cover significant distances, we look at cruising speed and range together. A yacht that can technically travel very fast may not necessarily be the right yacht for a particular itinerary.
