What should I check before signing a yacht charter contract?

Answer

Before signing a yacht charter contract, make sure you understand both the financial and practical arrangements.

At minimum, check:

The correct yacht and charter period.

The agreed charter fee.

Payment dates and amounts.

APA arrangements.

Applicable taxes.

Cruising area and any geographic restrictions.

Guest numbers and cabin arrangements.

What is included in the charter fee.

What expenses are additional.

Cancellation and postponement provisions.

Insurance requirements.

Special requests or negotiated amendments.

Any restrictions relating to pets, children, events, water toys or other intended activities.

If anything important has been discussed verbally, make sure the relevant agreement is properly reflected in the documentation where appropriate.

The contract should also be read alongside the yacht specifications and charter proposal so that you understand what has actually been agreed.

Broker’s advice

This is one of the areas where an experienced broker provides real value. The client should be able to ask, “What does this clause mean for me in practical terms?” and receive a clear explanation before committing.
