Does yacht speed affect fuel consumption?

Answer

Yes. In general, operating a yacht at higher speeds requires more engine power and can substantially increase fuel consumption.

The relationship is not identical for every yacht because hull design, propulsion systems and operating conditions differ.

For charter planning, the relevant question is often how much speed you actually need rather than simply which yacht has the highest maximum speed.

Analysis

Speed can therefore influence both itinerary flexibility and operating expenditure.

A yacht capable of high speed may be valuable when guests want to cover substantial distances, but cruising more slowly may reduce fuel consumption when the itinerary allows it.

Broker’s advice

If you’re choosing between two yachts, we’ll look at what the speed actually gives you. If it saves several hours on a passage that matters to your itinerary, it can be very valuable. If you’re spending most days at anchor, it may be much less important.
