What is a yacht’s cruising range?

Answer

A yacht's cruising range is an indication of how far it can travel under specified operating conditions before needing to refuel.

The actual range depends on factors including fuel capacity, cruising speed, sea conditions, engine performance, load and fuel reserves.

Published range figures should therefore be treated as technical information rather than a guarantee of a particular itinerary.

Analysis

Range becomes particularly relevant in remote cruising areas where fuel availability may be limited or where guests want to travel substantial distances between refuelling opportunities.

For many Mediterranean charters, range may be less important than cruising speed and itinerary design. In more remote destinations, it can become a much more significant consideration.

Broker Comment

We consider range in the context of the destination. There is little value in selecting a yacht with exceptional range if the planned charter involves short passages between well-serviced ports.
