What happens if I spend more than the APA?

Short answer

If charter expenses exceed the APA advanced, the charterer will generally be required to provide additional funds during the charter or as the account requires. The exact procedure is governed by the charter agreement.

Answer

APA is designed as an advance against anticipated expenses, not necessarily a spending limit.

If actual expenses exceed the initial APA, the captain or yacht management may notify the charterer and request additional funds. This can happen when:

The yacht cruises further than originally planned. –

Fuel prices or consumption are higher than anticipated. –

The yacht uses more expensive marinas. –

Guests request additional provisions. –

Food and beverage expenditure is higher than anticipated. –

Additional services or activities are arranged.

The captain generally manages expenditure in consultation with the charterer or broker where appropriate.

Analysis

Good itinerary planning can make APA much more predictable. Your broker should understand your preferred cruising style before the charter begins.

Broker comment

If you have a fixed overall holiday budget, tell your broker early. The itinerary can often be structured to reduce unnecessary variable costs.
