What happens if bad weather prevents us from following our planned itinerary?

Answer

If weather or sea conditions make part of the planned itinerary impractical or unsafe, the captain may recommend an alternative route, destination or activity.

The exact contractual consequences depend on the circumstances and the applicable charter agreement. A weather-related change does not automatically mean that the charter is cancelled or that the charter fee is refundable.

The captain's primary responsibility is the safe operation of the yacht.

Analysis

Weather disruption is one reason experienced brokers avoid presenting a charter itinerary as an absolute guarantee. A good plan includes alternatives and allows the captain to adapt the route.

Broker Comment

This is where local knowledge matters. If we know the destination well, we can often identify sheltered alternatives or different experiences that still give guests an excellent charter even when the original plan isn't practical.
