What is yacht range and why does it matter for a charter?

Answer

A yacht’s range refers broadly to the distance it can travel without needing to refuel, subject to the assumptions used for the published specification.

Range can be particularly relevant when planning remote itineraries, long passages or cruising areas where fuel facilities are limited.

For most conventional charters, however, range may be less important than cruising speed, itinerary and access to suitable refuelling locations.

Analysis

Published range figures need context because actual consumption varies with speed, sea conditions, loading and other operating factors.

A yacht with exceptional theoretical range is not necessarily a better charter choice if your itinerary is based around frequent ports and short passages.

Broker’s advice

Range matters most when it matches the way you intend to travel. If you’re planning remote cruising, we’ll look at it carefully; if you’re moving between well-serviced coastal destinations, other characteristics may matter much more.
