How much APA should I budget for a yacht charter?

Answer

There is no reliable single APA figure that applies to every yacht charter.

The expected APA depends on how the yacht will be used. A charter involving extensive cruising, frequent marina stays and significant fuel consumption may generate considerably higher expenses than a relaxed itinerary with limited cruising and more time at anchor.

Food and beverage preferences can also affect expenditure, as can the number of guests, the yacht’s size and fuel consumption, local port charges and special requests.

The charter contract will establish how the APA is calculated and administered.

A broker can usually provide a realistic indication based on the yacht, destination and proposed itinerary, but it should be regarded as an estimate rather than a guaranteed final cost.

Broker’s advice

The most useful APA estimate is destination- and itinerary-specific. Asking “What percentage is APA?” is less useful than asking “What do you expect the APA to be for this yacht and this itinerary?”
