Can large yachts access shallow bays?

Answer

Not necessarily. A yacht’s draft—the depth of the vessel below the waterline—can affect which shallow bays, anchorages and waterways it can safely access.

Other factors, including yacht length, beam, manoeuvrability and local conditions, can also matter.

A larger yacht may therefore have access to some locations but be unable to enter others that are suitable for a smaller vessel.

Analysis

Yacht size is not simply about luxury or space. It can directly influence the geography of the charter.

For guests who prioritise secluded shallow-water locations, draft and destination access can be important selection criteria.

Broker’s advice

If getting into shallow, intimate anchorages is important to you, tell us before choosing the yacht. Sometimes a slightly smaller yacht can open up parts of a destination that a much larger vessel cannot reach.
