How much fuel does a yacht use during a charter?

Answer

Fuel consumption varies considerably between yachts. It depends on the yacht’s size, engine configuration, hull design, cruising speed, sea conditions and how much time is spent underway.

A yacht travelling quickly for long distances can consume substantially more fuel than one moving between nearby anchorages at a moderate speed.

For an individual charter, the most useful estimate is based on the actual yacht and proposed itinerary rather than a generic consumption figure.

Analysis

Fuel is one of the reasons two apparently similar charters can have different operating costs. Published consumption figures should also be understood in the context of the speed at which they were measured.

Broker’s advice

If fuel cost is important to your planning, we’ll look at the yacht’s actual characteristics and your proposed itinerary rather than applying a generic percentage. That gives you a much more useful estimate of likely APA expenditure.
