The Tyrrhenian Sea, dubbed as the home of the 4 winds, is another interesting yachting destination in Italy. This crewed luxury yacht charter region is home to some famous and unusual island for the western Mediterranean – big names, such as Stromboli, Capri and Elba. In addition to this, of course, is the mainland’s coastline, which draws the most number of superyachts and yacht charterers each year. Its main attractions overall are are its dramatic famed picturesque rock formations and breathtaking cliffs along its coastlines.
Yacht Charter Holiday in the Tyrrhenian Sea
The Tyrrhenian Sea, a popular holiday destination in the Mediterranean, lies on the western side of the Italy coastline, northern end of Sicily and eastern side of Corsica. As a totally ocean based marine environment there is no better way to explore this area than by sea, on your own luxury charter yacht with family and friends. The southwestern end of the Tyrrhenian Sea is largely delineated by the Island of Elba. However, there are a lot of debates as to the exact points that delineate the southwestern end of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Still, this part of the Tyrrhenian Sea is home to popular island destinations including Cagliari, Stromboli, Capri, Elba, Naples and Palermo.
The name “Tyrrhenian” was derived from the Italian term “Mar Tirreno.” This Italian term, in turn, has Etruscan origins and historians believe that this name was given to the island when the Etruscan established control of an area along the coast where Tuscany is located today. The Tyrrhenian Sea was then referred to as the “Sea of Etruscans” and has always been associated to the famed Tuscan Coast, along with the rugged allure of known Italian destinations like Sardinia, Corsica and Elba.
The Tyrrhenian Sea is in a region where there are numerous undersea volcanic ranges. This explains why the shorelines within this region are teeming with granite formations. These natural wonders that are usually seen on the edges of the islands as well as on the Italian peninsula create one of the most astounding rock formations and cliffs. This is also the reason why the region is awash with a slew of coves and bays, making the Tyrrhenian Sea one of the best destinations for sailors and holidaymakers who are spending their holiday in Italy on board charter yacht.
Prevailing Climate in the Tyrrhenian Sea
The higher regions within the Sea of Tyrrhenian are cooler and have higher relative humidity, while the regions near sea level are predominantly warmer and dry. Summer months in the Sea of Tyrrhenian is generally dry and hot, and it is rainy and moderate during the winter months. For sailors and other yacht charter aficionados, the best time to visit the region are during the months from April to October.
Sailing Experience in the Tyrrhenian Sea
Legend has it that the cliffs that dominate the region covered by the Tyrrhenian Sea were the same location where the fabled four winds were kept by King Aeolus. Of course, this remains to be a myth, although the fact remains that the four winds do converge in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Libeccio emanates from the open waters along the southwestern region of the Mediterranean, the Mistral originates from the Valley of French Rhone, and the Ostro and the Scirocco come from southern portion, specifically from the African continent. Come and experience some very interesting natural majesty on your Mediterranean yacht charter, along with a very interesting culture and history.
The Tyrrhenian Sea is and will always be the favorite destination by sailors and other yacht charter enthusiasts. If you really want to experience the best that Italy can offer, you should include the Sea of Tyrrhenian in your itinerary.

Client Testimonials
What our clients say about their charter experience.
An Amazing Experience: My company is VIP Yacht Charter Group where I offer Glatt Kosher Yacht charters. I transitioned from day to term charters and was looking for a company and broker that I could trust. I reached out to Trina and explained to here that I have a client that was looking to do a week Glatt Kosher charter in the South of France. I knew from our initial call that she was the right person to work with. Trina is extremely knowledgeable in the charter world. The Yacht she recommended was Zeemar a 100ft, 5 stateroom beauty, and there couldn't have been a better yacht and crew for this client. Trina went above and beyond to make sure that everything went perfectly from communicating with the client to Captain and even provisioner. She was always available to talk no matter what time it was. I am so grateful to Trina that this charter went way beyond the clients' expectations.
Sally, hi, the trip was amazing; we loved LIR. The crew were fantastic, and the chef came up with some fabulous meals. The itinerary was great, and the weather was almost perfect. We loved it so much we would definitely consider a repeat trip, maybe around Sicily, in the future.
Sally, Thank you guys for the most amazing week. Your kindness and expertise made all the difference. Can't wait to come back again! It was an amazing experience. Thank you! The crew were the best people in the world, we will miss them. Thank you for all you’ve done. This truly has been a life-changing week! Filled with so many unforgettable memories, laughs, and so many smiles. I can’t thank you all enough for making this a week to remember! This has been the BEST week of my life. You guys are amazing people; I’m so grateful.
Hi Sally, we had a great time! The crew were fantastic and really went above and beyond to ensure we had the best time. Thank you also for all your organizing and help. Kind regards, S.
LJ, I have just spoken with the client and his feedback was all very positive. He said this was their best charter in the Bahamas. Captain Chris and his team were brilliant and looked after them beautifully. He felt they saw places they have never seen before, experiences that they’d never had before and that Chris had really understood the brief and that his knowledge of the Bahamas was amazing. In short, they loved it and would like to come back. They have chartered extensively, and this was one of their favourite experiences and their little boy’s favourite yacht (apparently he cried when he left as he’d had such a great time).
Sally, the trip went very well indeed. We would be hard pushed to expect any better. The boat was adequately furnished as advertised, very clean and very efficiently run. Toys and facilities all in working order and always at hand. The crew were always prompt, efficient and very courteous, eager to please with a genuine smile. Captain Mate runs an excellent crew and is very professional. The food was excellent and varied. The Captain’s wife was in charge of the kitchen and worked tirelessly to impress us with her skills. We had a wonderful time on board and have nothing to complain about. We would certainly recommend the Son de Mar to friends and families that enjoy the sea and love the simple, essential pleasures of a laid-back life on board a very good value for money yacht. DM
