Season Opening Party hosted by Karpaz Gate Marina

June 17, 2013

Saturday, June 8, 2013, saw hundreds of guests attend an amazing season opening party, hosted by Karpaz Gate Marina. Situated in Northern Cyprus, this luxury superyacht marina proved itself to be the perfect setting as it played a host to the biggest event in its two-year history to mark the opening of its new beach club.

Some 80 people arrived by sea, including 15 boats with the Carreta Carreta rally, especially to take advantage of the free weekend’s berthing and VIP invitation offered by the marina, joining other invited guests and dignitaries at the stylish gathering.

The landmark occasion was a significant moment for Karpaz Gate Marina, as the party represented the successful culmination of years of planning and work to complete the impressive venue and associated facilities.

After approximately €70 million of investment in the project, Karpaz Bay Resort Ltd’s Liza Singer said that Karpaz Gate Marina had now opened up the gateway to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and the Karpaz region as a tourist destination.

“North Cyprus and Karpaz Gate Marina are finally on the map,” said Singer. “When we started our development eight years ago, there was an army zone covering all shores of Northern Cyprus. We managed to lift these limitations and re-draft those maps to make the Northern Cyprus coasts free sailing and cruising grounds. Our marina has been built to be the gate through which people can enter the TRNC. Here, as opposed to flights to the TRNC, the arrival is direct.”

First, at an elegant, early evening VIP reception and cocktail party, with the perfect backdrop of the setting sun over the boats alongside in the marina, some 350 guests and marina clients sipped Champagne and sampled canapés while they were serenaded by a live saxophonist.

Following welcoming addresses by marina representatives and local officials, including Singer, Karpaz Gate Marina Harbour Master Deniz Akaltan and Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Mr Sahap Asikoglu, the assembled guests were then invited to view a new photography exhibition, ‘Karpaz: Untapped Beauty’, which will remain open to the public for 45 days. The photographs by renowned Brazilian photographer Dudu Tresca, featuring stunning scenes from the surrounding TRNC, were arranged in a specially-created gallery space at the marina.

Karpaz Gate Marina’s unique hospitality continued with an extravagant sit-down meal as diners enjoyed the atmosphere inside the marina’s acclaimed Hemingway’s Resto-Bar or took advantage of the al fresco option on the promenade area.

The marina then opened its doors to hundreds more revellers as the party began by the beautiful infinity swimming pool at the new beach club a short walk along the promenade where a stage and huge screen had been constructed.

The dancing started as DJ Funky Fish warmed up the assorted guests before up-lifting Austrian electro band Makossa & Megablast took to the stage to showcase their impressive vocals with an authentic and unique fusion of African rhythms and electronic club music. Featuring Marcus Wagner-Lapierre and Sascha Weisz, the band thrilled the crowd with their interactive style and broad appeal to both young and old.

About 80 marina staff and other personnel were on hand to cater for everyone, entertain the guests and capture the event on video and camera, with the celebrations continuing until 2.30am.

Benefiting from duty-free status, Karpaz Gate Marina, located on the north eastern tip of Northern Cyprus, opened in 2011. It provides 300 berths for vessels up to 55 metres and boat maintenance facilities on site including an 18,000 sq m dry dock for refit and repairs, as well as a substantial 300-ton travel lift that is capable of lifting vessels up to 45 metres and with a beam of up 10 metres.

Gold for Stephens Waring’s flagship BEQUIA Yacht at Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013

June 17, 2013

Stephens Waring Design is thrilled to report that its flagship, the 91-foot sailing yacht Bequia, has triumphed at this year’s Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, running in the beautiful Italian yacht charter location – Porto Cervo in Sardinia. This amazing event kicks off the regatta season in the Mediterranean, and a fleet of 21 vessels, including the lovely Bequia yacht, gathered at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda to test their racing mettle.

While owner Jes Staley had Stephens Waring design Bequia yacht to take his family cruising in comfort and safety, he does enjoy a good race once or twice a year. “I have learned a lot about sailing through racing. You get to really test the boat and the sails and learn how to maneuver it and make it go fast,” says Jes. But he always keeps his eye on the goal-to be sure everyone has a great time.

Among the fleet of sleek, bold Med-style boats from the tables of the likes of Tripp, Dubois, and Phillippe Starck, superyacht Bequia was a standout with her classic Spirit of Tradition lines and golden varnished teak. But she quickly disproved the notion that classic is slow, as she racked up firsts in Day One and Day Two, outpacing rivals in Class C like the Hoek-designed Truly Classic 78 yacht Drumfire and the Dubois-designed 37-meter superyacht Genevieve.

On Day Three she found herself on the wrong side of a windshift, along with the rest of her class except Genevieve, and settled for third, behind Genevieve and the Oyster 885 luxury yacht Karibu. Conditions were delightful and challenging, ranging from lighter breezes to puffs and gusts in the mid-twenties. Racing was cancelled on Day 4 due to lack of wind.

“It was a great regatta, with super boats to race against,” said Jes after collecting his trophy. “Porto Cervo is a beautiful place, and it’s also a great win for all the guys in Maine who helped build the yacht.”

Luxury yacht Bequia was built by Brooklin Boat Yard of Brooklin, Maine, and launched in 2009.

Jes and wife Debbie enjoyed the sailing and the coastline in Sardinia so much they plan a return visit later this summer with their family to enjoy some lower-key cruising. Also on the agenda is a cruise among the Greek islands before returning to the west side of the Pond in the fall. This passage will give Jes an opportunity to realize a long-held dream-making an Atlantic crossing under sail.

Swan Yachts to attend Giraglia Rolex Cup 2013

June 13, 2013

The upcoming 61st edition of the Giraglia Rolex Cup will kick off in the lovely French yacht charter location – St. Tropez this weekend. The race will be attended by an impressive fleet of Swan yachts, competing in both the inshore and offshore portions of this historic event.

Organised by the Yacht Club Italiano, in cooperation with Yacht Club de France, Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez and Yacht Club Sanremo, the week-long regatta attracts close to 200 entries each year. Playing host to one of the most renowned offshore races in the Mediterranean; a race from Saint-Tropez (France) to Genoa (Italy), covering 242 nautical miles, this is a key event in the sailing calendar. The iconic offshore race is preceded by a race from Sanremo to Saint-Tropez to kick the event off and three days of inshore racing in the historic and beautiful port of Saint-Tropez.

All Swans competing in the Giraglia Rolex Cup will be eligible for the ClubSwan award presented to the best placed Swan overall, based on the combined results of the offshore and inshore races.  With close to 20 Swans entered, the competition for this award will be high. There will be a strong Swan fleet in both the inshore and offshore races; Swan 45s racing are Elena Nova, Jeroboam, Blue Nights, Axelle S and Thetis, whilst Swan 601 @robas and Swan 80FD charter yacht Alpina will be amongst the maxis racing.

Gérard Logel, owner of Swan 601 @robas commented
: “We are very pleased to be attending the Giraglia Rolex Cup once again with our Swan 601 @robas. We did enter last year but unfortunately had drop out of the race before we could finish. This year we have a new mainsail and replaced the spinnaker pole with a new bowsprit; this should make it easier for us gybing in the strong winds and ultimately more competitive.  We are looking forward to the event and we do hope to have a better race this year.”

A highlight of the event will be the ClubSwan Cocktail Reception where the Yacht Club Italiano Team for the New York Yacht Club Invitational, which is led by Leonardo Ferragamo, Chairman of Nautor’s Swan, will be announced.

The Swans should arrive into Genoa late on Thursday, 20 June after the offshore race, with the prize giving taking place on Friday, 21 June at the Yacht Club Italiano. As the race record holder is not competing this year, an open field is expected for the battle to be first home in 2013.

Close racing for Oyster 100 Yacht SARAFIN and Oyster 885 Yacht KARIBU at Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013

June 11, 2013

For the first time, the Dubois-designed Oyster 100 superyacht Sarafin lined up against the Humphreys-designed Oyster 885 sailing yacht Karibu at the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013 in Sardinia, Italy. With Klaas Meertens, Oyster shareholder on board Sarafin yacht as a guest on day one, and David Tydeman, Oyster CEO supporting Britta Bunkenburg as well as Thorsten Flack from the Oyster Hamburg office for a day on the new Karibu yacht, the interest was high.

Seasoned from her participation in the St Barths Bucket and the YCCS Loro Piana Virgin Gorda regattas in March 2013 and with more than 14,000 sailing miles now under her belt, the owner and guests of the Oyster 100-01 yacht Sarafin, made time in their summer cruising calendar to take part in both the Dubois Cup and the Loro Piana regatta’s during 1 – 8 June. Placed fourth and sixth in the Dubois Cup, resulting in a fourth overall, the Sarafin team lined up against the Oyster 885-02 yacht Karibu as the hot favourite for the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta.

Somewhat in contrast, the new Oyster 885-02 superyacht Karibu, having just completed her maiden voyage down to the Mediteranean following handover in April in the UK, was still settling in new sails and heading out onto the race course for their first hoist of the spinnaker.

Race one in ten knots of wind was a comfortable win for Sarafin yacht, taking third in class, with luxury yacht Karibu ten minutes behind in fourth, suffering from taking a long time to get the spinnaker hoisted!

Race two – a bit more wind and another win to superyacht Sarafin, taking second in class, with Karibu yacht fifth – but much closer, less than three minutes on corrected between them after three and half hours of racing. Race three and the battle moved up a gear, more wind again and a different course with Karibu showing a very powerful performance upwind and securing second with Sarafin fourth.

Sadly, no wind for race four and no chance for luxury yacht Karibu to try for a repeat performance. So well done to Sarafin yacht, securing third in class overall and also to Karibu, just behind her fourth in class overall and only two points behind.

Great results for the two Oyster Superyachts – it will be great to see superyacht Karibu at the Oyster Regatta in Palma in October, she’s shown she’s significantly more powerful than an Oyster 82 and clearly will give the Oyster 82-14 yacht Starry Night a challenge this year. Oyster 100–02 superyacht Penelope will be seen in Palma next week at the Superyacht Cup and Oyster hopes that she will also attend the Oyster Palma Regatta.

Record fleet of classic yachts for 2013 Camper & Nicholsons Trophée Bailli de Suffren

June 06, 2013

To kick off in the lovely summer yacht charter location – St. Tropez on June 22, this year’s Camper & Nicholsons Trophée Bailli de Suffren will be attended by a record fleet of classic yachts, varying in size from the 12m sailing yacht Palynodie II to the outstanding 56m charter yacht Atlantic. This year’s fleet is expected to reach the entry limit of 25 yachts, promising an exciting and highly competitive race.

ROWDY – winner of the Bailli de Suffren in 2009 and 2010

Sailing yacht ROWDY – winner of the Camper & Nicholsons Trophée Bailli de Suffren in 2009 and 2010

The Mediterranean’s only offshore passage race for classic yachts, the Trophée Bailli de Suffren covers 600nm over three legs between Saint-Tropez and Grand Harbour Marina in Malta with stop-overs in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia, and Trapani in Sicily. It has been called “the Mediterranean’s most beautiful yacht race” for its unique spirit,  the very special yachts and for the ports marking the race course.

This year, four past winners of the Bailli are looking to recapture, the “Sword of Honour of Admiral Satan”,  the race’s overall trophy. 25m sailing yacht Lelantina (1937) won the 2001 Prologue as well as the first full race in 2002; Havsörnen, a 16m Bermudan cutter first launched in 1931, sailed to victory in 2006; the 32m Fife charter yacht Moonbeam IV (1914) was 2008′s winner and the Herreshoff-designed 20m Rowdy achieved back-to-back wins in 2009 and 2010.

The battle for overall victory will be hard-fought throughout the fleet and not just among the four previous winners. A number of match races within the race are promised, the most dramatic being the head-to-head between the huge replica schooners, charter yacht Atlantic (56m) and charter yacht Elena (55m), rekindling a rivalry that goes back 85 years to a hotly contested trans-Atlantic duel between their namesakes.

Superyacht ELENA – anticipating a hard-fought match race with ATLANTIC

Luxury charter yacht ELENA – anticipating a hard-fought match race with charter yacht ATLANTIC

Two Fife cutters, luxury yacht Mariska (27m) and superyacht Moonbeam IV (32m), should also be evenly matched. Dating from 1908 and 1914 respectively, both are regulars on the classic yacht circuit and either could be in the running for overall honours as well as vying for the upper hand in their own 600 mile match race.

According to C&N’s Marketing Director, Sean Purdy, “The Trophée Bailli de Suffren is a unique spectacle as well as a genuinely challenging yacht race. It’s great to see these historic boats competing in the offshore environment they were originally designed for, and we’re delighted that the enduring appeal of the event has seen a record entry this year.”

The Trophée Bailli de Suffren harkens to historic links between Saint-Tropez and Malta, formalised in 2012 by the twinning of Saint-Tropez with the city of Birgu in Malta, home of the race’s final destination Camper & Nicholsons’ Grand Harbour Marina.

Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta 2013: Day 1 won by sailing yachts MY SONG, VIRTUELLE and BEQUIA

June 05, 2013

Day 1 of this year’s Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta saw the sun rise early on Wednesday morning, June 5, to greet the 21 sailing superyachts, participating in this popular race. Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) as well as Boat International Media, the event, hosted at the YCCS in the popular Italian yacht charter destination – Porto Cervo, marks the start of the Mediterranean regatta season.

The diverse fleet, ranging from the 24m Starck-styled sailing yacht Virtuelle and Hoek-designed luxury yacht Drumfire to 45m regatta regulars charter yacht Salperton IV and superyacht Saudade, and 49.7m Zefira yacht, were looking forward to racing getting underway in earnest. The fleet, which is racing under the International Super Yacht Rule (ISYR), covers a broad spectrum of superyachts, from modern classics to ocean thoroughbreds, sloops to yawls, and pure cruising yachts to those with a more performance orientated design.

The 21 yachts have been divided into three equal cruising divisions – A to C – according to their ratings, and each yacht has three ratings that can be applied depending on the windspeed on the course.

After a brief postponement the breeze filled in to around eight knots, and the patience of the yacht owners and crews was rewarded as the race committee set three courses of roughly 29, 25 and 23 nautical miles for class A to C respectively. The three courses followed roughly the same track – a short beat to a laid mark, followed by a fetch to the Mortorio islands, then a long run to Monaci, a short dog leg to the south of Caprera and then home to the finish off Porto Cervo.

By the time the fleet got to the famous Monaci rocks at the end of the run, luxury yacht Virtuelle had powered into the lead on the water, rounding the rocks and dowsing her spinnaker nearly six minutes ahead of the second yacht, 49.7m superyacht Zefira. The rest of the yachts came round in tight formation, making for a spectacular sight as the faster yachts such as 30.3m Southern Wind sailing yacht Cape Arrow began to haul in the slower yachts.

The 30.8m Oyster yacht Sarafin snuck through to take line honours for Race One, closely followed by Bequia yacht, Drumfire and the sleek 45m Baltic Yachts-built superyacht Visione. Of course, it is the corrected time that counts, and the provisional results showed that in Cruising Class A the 25.4m yacht My Song – owned by Pier-Luigi Loro Piana – had won through; Virtuelle held on to take Class B on corrected, while Bequia took the win in Class C.

‘It looks like it’s going to be a light regatta,’ said Seamas Meharg, boat captain and safety officer of Bequia yacht. ‘The lighter airs and flatter water are good for us, and today’s long downwind leg was also beneficial. We got a good start, and did well at the bottom rounding at Monaci – we ducked Zefira’s stern and managed to get inside her, staying close in to the rocks.’ Meharg will be hoping that the forecast light airs continue. ‘We’re keeping an eye on Drumfire,’ he continued, ‘and there might be a little more breeze tomorrow, but if we can hold on tomorrow we might be looking good…’

For Zefira yacht, today’s second place in Class B was a strong result – not least because she beat arch-rival charter yacht Salperton by just 10 seconds on corrected time after an epic battle that played out round nearly the whole racecourse. ‘We tried hard,’ her delighted captain, Federico Biaturri, smiled on the dock. ‘We were a bit slow on one gybe and had to tack to avoid Visione near the end which allowed Salperton to sneak over the line ahead of us, but it was a great race and we’ve been getting better and better since the start of the Dubois Cup last weekend. The owners are very happy!’

The close-fought battle with Salperton is a fine demonstration of just how accurate the ISYR rating system is getting. ‘The handicaps are getting better and better all the time,’ Biaturri commented. ‘It shows in our battle with Salperton – it’s very close and it’s just going to get better and better from here.’

Racing continues tomorrow with the first start scheduled at 12:00 and scirocco winds of 10-12 knots forecast.

THE FAM-TRIP ITINERARY

Our broker arrived in Dubrovnik airport and embarked in Cavtat a beautiful little bay and village, around 5-10 minutes’ drive from the airport. Cavtat is an excellent place to start or end a yacht charter holiday anywhere near Dubrovnik. The vessel can cruise out to several great nearby anchorages and charter guests can enjoy the vast selection of water toys, go for a swim or simply unwind sunbathing. In the late afternoon a short cruise took the group to a perfect anchorage in front of the old town of Dubrovnik: another fabulous place to be or tender-in for shore visits.

Dubrovnik in Croatia

Dubrovnik in Croatia

JO left Dubrovnik overnight to cruise to the north eastern tip of Mljet, with everyone waking up in one of the quiet bays of the National Park.

“The whole island is very lush and green, and the surrounding waters amazingly calm and clear. This is a good area for shore visits, and there are great walks, but we opted for cycling.” Nick Benazeth – CharterWorld yacht charter specialist

There are relatively easy trails that lead through quiet forest to the other side of the island where there is a lake, and a small island with a charming monastery on it.  There are also many different diving options for scuba diving around, with a lot of ancient Roman remains – mainly amphoras.

Porto Montenegro Marina

Porto Montenegro Marina

Another early morning cruise took everyone back towards Cavtat to clear out of Croatia and along the coast into Montenegro. The whole of the Kotor bay area is spectacular, with fortifications at the entrance, impressive cliffs all around and the picturesque islands off Perast (Our Lady of the Rocks and St George Island). Once at Porto Montenegro, a 30-minute scenic cruise will take you to the heart of the fjord and towards Kotor. There are many good anchorages here for water-sports and relaxation.

“After a slow cruise throughout dinner and a great night at anchor, we sailed back out towards Tivat for a final day of watersports and free diving.”

Benetti Charter Yacht JO

There are still a few weeks available for yacht charters on JO in late season in the Eastern Mediterranean with EUR€195,000.00 per week plus expenses in August and a negotiable rate of €175,000 per week plus expenses in the low season. JO is also available for charter in the Caribbean during the European winter. For more information contact our charter professionals here.
