“The owner set the bar for the project very high and the extraordinary interior design from Adam Lay Studios presented many challenges to implement. This is not the largest yacht that Baltic has built but in detail and quality of build it is their best so far” – Nigel Ingram, MCM.

An automatically-deployed bimini and mega sound system are examples of comfortable living being a theme in the cockpit.
Luxury yacht Inukshuk is named after a stone landmark used by the Inuit of the Canadian Arctic. She will be at Monaco Yacht Show.

Launch of Baltic 107 sailing yacht INUKSHUK designed by German Frers

May 29, 2013

Last week saw the launch of the German Frers-designed Baltic 107 sailing yacht Inukshuk at the waterfront facilities of Baltic Yachts in Jakobstad, Finland. The 32,6m Inukshuk yacht is a lightweight, high performance sloop, developed to provide fast, efficient as well as comfortable cruising.

With a total displacement of 78232kg (light craft), of which 31612kg is ballast, the Baltic 107 superyacht Inukshuk has an impressive power to weight ratio. The telescopic keel enables draft to vary from 3.35m to 4.85m without interfering with the interior layout. The carbon rig is supported by carbon fibre rigging, just one example of the high performance aspirations of this yacht.

The interior styling was done by Adam Lay and he has designed a very modern, elegant interior using oak as the primary wood. Baltic 107 yacht Inukshuk’s interior has an owner-forward, crew-aft layout with a generous VIP cabin just forward of the mast. This sits adjacent to an owner’s study which leads to the generous en-suite owner’s cabin in the bow. A spacious raised saloon, two guest cabins and a dedicated children’s cabin complete the guest arrangement. The commercial standard galley, twin-crew cabins and head make up the crew accommodation.

Light-weight construction techniques and unique surface finishes have seen Baltic Yachts’ joinery department rise to the challenge, and will ensure the Baltic 107 luxury yacht Inukshuk’s interior is like no other in the sailing world.

Testing and sea trials will be performed in Jakobstad during the summer and Baltic 107 yacht Inukshuk will make her world premier at the Monaco Yacht Show later this year in September.

Baltic Yachts presents new Baltic 175 sailing yacht PINK GIN VI with launch in 2017

May 15, 2013

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Baltic Yachts is thrilled to announce that it is starting construction of its all-new Baltic 175 sailing yacht Pink Gin VI. Designed by judel/vrolijk & co., Pink Gin VI yacht will be the 6th Baltic Yachts vessel, destined for the same owner. Her launch is scheduled for 2017.

New Balk 175 Yacht Pink Gin VI by Balk Shipyard

New Baltic 175 sailing yacht Pink Gin VI by Balk Shipyard

The basic concept behind the design for the Baltic 175 yacht Pink Gin VI is to improve on the already successful concept of Baltic 152 yacht. Baltic Yachts is looking for more performance from a shape with a timeless silhouette. The boat will have a vertical bow, long overhang and a deep lifting keel. After a thorough CFD/VPP study of different hull shapes, the yard has opted for bow sections that are very close to its racing-cruising designs with very soft runs.

The displacement of 235 tons (light craft) is low for a boat of this size due to the carbon sandwich hull and deck construction. To keep the displacement as low as possible it was decided to go for a lifting keel configuration with a draft of 7.00 m in sailing displacement and a minimum draft of 4.50m.

Balk 175 Yacht Pink Gin VI

Baltic 175 Yacht Pink Gin VI

The sailplan is very generous with a mast height of nearly 67 metres above water level that will guarantee good performance in all conditions. The sailplan has two headstays, one for the big non-overlapping Jib, one for a staysail. The big furling Code Zero will be attached on a fixed bowsprit.

Development of the cockpit area is being shared by Design Unlimited in collaboration with judel/vrolijk. The owner has had a big influence with clear intentions for the use of this space and as a result it will be divided into three zones. Forward will be the large main entertaining cockpit with a free-standing dining area and a variety of seating areas with everyone’s comfort in mind.

The focal point of the main cockpit will be the free-standing bar with access to the all-important galley and crew mess below, so that service and catering can be a seamless experience for the owner and his guests. The helm and navigation area is linked to the impressive aft cockpit which comprises of a cozy breakfast area and two large day beds for sunbathing plus bimini options for those lazy afternoons of relaxation. The deck house with design styling by judel/vrolijk will be timeless without the normal retro touches which can often be seen on this kind of yacht.

The interior layout and styling of superyacht Pink Gin VI have also been entrusted to Design Unlimited. The new yacht will take on all the timeless qualities and eclectic touches of the Pink Gin lifestyle that have been admired by so many. She will have an interior where texture and surface treatment will be of great relevance and select materials used to produce a strikingly provocative interior with elegant cozy touches so that the owner can be comfortable on his world cruising voyages.

One of the many interesting features of the Pink Gin VI yacht is the Master Stateroom which is located forward. This is a large, open-plan suite that incorporates an impressive fold out balcony for the owner to enjoy a space that is both totally private and which allows a wonderfully intimate connection to the sea.

Hall SCR: Seamless Carbon Rigging – The Ultimate Performance Upgrade
Hall’s revolutionary SCR Seamless Carbon Rigging is made by fusing the vertical and diagonal shroud elements form a single, homogeneous piece of rigging. Hall SCR is solid carbon and therefore impervious to water. Other composite rigging products, with braided covers and air pockets inside, let moisture in, which adds weight and can reduce strength.  With proper maintenance, its life expectancy, like that of a Hall carbon mast, can be many decades.

SCR Airfoil: The first, and only, carbon fiber rigging with a streamlined airfoil shape. Hall’s revolutionary SCR Airfoil dramatically reduces drag by reducing frontal area to its absolute minimum. SCR Airfoil reduces upwind drag by 50% over round rigging. Baltic 78 charter yacht Lupa of London completed her recent refit with Hall SCR Airfoil rigging.

LUPA OF LONDON Under Sail

LUPA OF LONDON Under Sail

SCR Round: Hall SCR round rigging has a profile almost identical with Nitronic 50 rod. It has a smaller diameter – and therefore less drag – than bundled carbon and PBO systems. 2012 Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup Supermaxi winner, the Baltic 112 superyacht Nilaya, is outfitted with Hall SCR round.

SCR Continuous: The low-profile rigging shape of SCR continuous as it passes through the spreader allows us to offer a minimum size, elegant spreader tip design. SCR Airfoil continuous rigging can be found on the recently launched Ker 51 Varuna. A sample will be available at the Hall Spars booth, situated at QS32 in the Darse Sud Tent.

SCR Discontinuous: Hall’s SCR discontinuous carbon rigging features our unique, easy-to-install Split Tip Cups that are custom machined for SCR stemball terminals. Hall uses only titanium connections with the carbon rod. At half the weight of stainless, Hall’s titanium end fittings are the smallest and lightest end fittings available. Swan 80 sailing yacht Selene was recently fitted with SCR discontinuous rigging, along with the recently launched Tulip 88 yacht and Contest 72 yacht.

Frers 88 sailing yacht Tulip

Frers 88 sailing yacht Tulip

SCR Retrofit Package
Hall SCR carbon rigging is up to 70% lighter than metal rod rigging.  Upgrading to Hall SCR is the best way to improve performance, and one of the easiest. Hall has introduced an SCR retrofit package to replace conventional stainless rod rigging simply and easily. The system is “plug and play” with no mast re-work or spreader modifications required.  New rods can be installed in a matter of hours, and in many cases, Hall rods interface with existing mast and deck hardware for further cost savings.

New AutoLock Design
New for 2012, Hall introduces an internal lock with visual and audio proximity indicators. It is a simple and refined device using standard Hall AutoLock bodies and components that can handle multiple bullets for use with mainsails. Proven to be easily serviceable, the lock can be taken out of the mast with the halyard still in it – no messenger lines needed.

AutoLocks have proven consistency and performance on boats including the Swan 45, Ker 43, Antrim 40, Ker 40, Gunboat 90 and Baltic 78.  Compact and versatile, all parts are self-contained and there are no trip lines to tangle on deck or in the mast. The most consistent and easy-to-service solution on the market, Hall AutoLocks provide a new level of elegant simplicity.

Hall Spars Commercial Division
Hall Spars has also been very busy with non-marine composite projects for the energy, aerospace, and defense industries. Details are classified for many of Hall Spars aerospace and defense projects, but in our most recent energy project, Hall manufactured turbine components for the United States’ first commercial, grid-connected tidal energy project. Hall Spars all-composite Advanced Design Cross Flow turbines are key to Ocean Renewable Power Company’s TidGen turbine generator unit (TGU) design. The TGU is the core component or “engine” for ORPC’s proprietary hydrokinetic device, which captures the energy of moving water without using dams or other barriers.

Hall Spars built the tidal turbines with carbon fiber reinforced composites, an ideal material for the loads the turbines will encounter and the marine environment in which they will operate.

Hall Spars Team
Hall Spars is very proud to announce that Andrea Merani has recently received his Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate and is now attending the Master Project Managing training. Andrea joined the Hall team in 2004, with the opening of the Hall Med Sales & Service office.

Hall Spars Service
Hall Spars and Rigging has more than 30 years of experience building and servicing the world’s most innovative high-performance spars and rigging. No one is better equipped to service one’s superyacht’s mast and rigging. With locations worldwide, technicians from Hall Spars international service team will travel to one’s boat. Hall spar or not, one can still get the famous Hall Service. From annual inspections to rigging replacement, Hall Spars is here to provide the expert service that guarantees the best ongoing performance.

MCM’s Nigel Ingram is managing the project with Mark von Drashek and Georges Bourgoignie completing the owner’s team.

The interior styling has been greatly influenced by an area of great natural beauty in North America where the client spends much of his leisure time. Taking cues from rock formations, lichen, trees, water and stunning paintings by a group of talented individuals, have culminated in an interior which pushes the boundaries for a yacht of this size.

Texture, natural looking surfaces, special finishes containing pigments made from the berries of plants found in the region, provide an immediate connection with one of the owner’s favourite places in the world. The mainly neutral but textural built-in joinery is augmented by bright bold colours in the upholstery fabrics, which are again inspired by the luminous lichen colours found in this region.

Special custom-made furniture pieces, lighting, and feature bulkhead panels are being developed specifically for the project which demands a completely new interpretation of a sailing yacht’s interior. Light-weight construction techniques and unique surface finishes have seen Baltic Yachts’ joinery department rise to the challenge, and will ensure the B107 yacht’s interior is like no other in the sailing world.
