Luxury yacht 80 GLX features four different layouts. There are two choices for the main and lower deck. A layout on the main deck is based on a traditional plan with a separate galley to port side as well as a dining table with a welcoming saloon. There is also an astern galley layout available, which makes the saloon plan looks more like to that of smaller boats and becoming a more convivial area. Below, four double cabins can be found. Some small details have been actually changed here, with the most significant coming from the full beam owners stateroom head and walk-in wardrobe.

Palma International Yachting Forum to be hosted by a popular Spanish yacht charter destination - Palma de Mallorca

Apart from a comprehensive website giving complete details of the forum, there is now a mobile device app which can be downloaded for free including all the required information on the venue and program, plus an instant booking form. Numbers will be restricted to 120, and with just 10 weeks to go the organisers advise booking now to avoid disappointment.

Running alongside the 30th Boat Show Palma, which itself is hosting an impressive line up of over thirty +24 metre luxury boats in the first ever Palma Superyacht Brokers Show, the forum will cover a varied range of key subjects concerning the administration, technical management and ownership of large commercial yachts.

The forum managers, Patricia Bullock and Peter Franklin, say that they have created a five day program, which will enable overseas visitors to not only benefit from participation in the interactive workshops, but to also to enjoy Palma de Mallorca outside of the forum session hours. This includes networking lunches, cocktails and a paella dinner all interspersed within the agenda, and a friendly one day golf competition at the Jack Nicklaus designed Puntiro golf course on Saturday 4th May.

For those staying over the weekend there will be free entry to the boat show, and a unique ‘Rib,Ride ‘n’ Rotor’ rally on Sunday 5th May.  This will give up to 100 people an opportunity to see the best of Palma and its surroundings in three ways….Across the bay in a high speed RIB, some off road driving in a fleet of Karmann buggy cars, and a helicopter ride to view the port from the air. All in the same day, and for one special all inclusive price! These weekend fun events will be offered exclusively to forum participants who book before the 21st March. After that they will be made available to the wider yachting fraternity, if any places are still free.

Pendennis celebrating 25-year history of superyacht custom build and refit

February 15, 2013

It is a very special year for the prominent UK shipyard Pendennis as it is celebrating the company’s 25-year history of superyacht custom build as well as refit.

Pendennis celebrating its 25th anniversary

Pendennis celebrating its 25th anniversary

Pendennis Shipyard Ltd was born out of a local yacht building company which was acquired by Peter de Savary and then relocated to Falmouth Docks in 1988. Pendennis’ first contract in 1988 was to build the 125′ sailing yacht La Cattiva (ex Taramber), followed by a major refit of the 228′ three-masted superyacht Adix. A management buy-out in 1993 by the current Managing Directors, Mike Carr and Henk Wiekens, was followed by their first project, a major rebuild of the 1903 classic 170’ luxury yacht Adela. Since that time Adela has been one of the company’s most regular visitors with four refits undertaken by either the Falmouth or Palma teams, including a 5m midship extension in 1996.

When Mike and Henk took over the yard 70-80 staff were on site, whereas Pendennis now employs over 320 permanent employees covering the full range of trades from engineers to painters. The company continues to grow with plans to upgrade and develop the facility in Falmouth due to commence later this year. In 2011 the refit business expanded to Palma which provides a valuable Mediterranean base for the Pendennis fleet requiring shorter programmes of work. The facility in Palma is currently undergoing refits on superyacht Va Bene and motor yacht Fair Lady with a full order book confirmed during the second year of trading.

Pendennis celebrating 25-year history of superyacht custom build and refit

Throughout its history Pendennis has delivered over 30 Custom New Builds including some of the world’s most recognizable superyachts such as motor yacht Steel, catamaran yacht Hemisphere, charter yacht Nostromo, sailing yacht Christopher and superyacht Rebecca. The refit side of the business has remained strong and continues to grow annually. To date Pendennis has completed over 200 refit projects, most recently completing the substantial rebuild of motor yacht A2 (ex. Masquerade of Sole). Alongside a number of other refit projects in Falmouth, Pendennis is currently undertaking a major rebuild of the world’s largest sloop, sailing yacht m5 (ex. Mirabella V), due to be completed this summer.

Pendennis has been privileged to work on many local and unique non-industry projects over the years, including building the current King Harry Ferry, one of the UK’s most picturesque chain ferry crossings which traverses the Fal Estuary. Its expertise in working aluminium in to curved, non linear forms led Pendennis to be commissioned to create the revolutionary NatWest Media Centre at Lord’s cricket ground in London in 1999. Winner of numerous awards, the media centre attracted enormous interest in both the national and architectural press.

Throughout 2013 Pendennis will be organising numerous local and industry events to celebrate its anniversary. The company will also be posting historic photos and video footage to our Facebook and YouTube pages which will provide a fascinating insight into the changes in the yard and within the superyacht industry since 1988. In conjunction with this Pendennis has also initiated a ‘Crew Alumni’ scheme which encourages current and previous visiting crews to exchange information via its online social networks, provides Pendennis-specific offers with local businesses and industry contacts, as well as organising regular social events for Falmouth-based crews.

Mike Carr, Managing Director, is looking forward to the year ahead: “The past 25 years have seen an enormous change to our facility in Falmouth as well as to the superyacht industry globally. We are extremely proud of Pendennis’ heritage and feel privileged to have worked on some of the world’s most iconic vessels. The longevity of the business is testament to the quality of service that we offer and we are proud to have formed strong long-term relationships with many of our clients. Naturally the workforce at Pendennis is also key to our business – the level of pride in the quality of work that is produced by all our in-house trades has always been exceptional. The team is backed up by our award winning apprenticeship scheme which continues to provide a new generation of young, enthusiastic tradespeople. Henk and I are looking forward to seeing the business grow over the next few years and to celebrating the company’s achievements over the past 25 years with our clients, staff and industry friends.”

February 07, 2013

It has been a great start to 2013 for PURE Superyacht Refit, following the nomination of motor yacht Paramour as a finalist in two of the industry’s most prominent awards: the International Yacht & Aviation Awards as well as the acclaimed World Superyacht Awards. Based in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, the specialist independent refit management company is also looking forward to the year ahead after concluding 2012 on a high note with the return of a long-standing client, luxury yacht Slipstream, finalist superyacht Paramour, plus five new vessels.

Continuing its success and reaffirming its position in the superyacht refit industry, PURE is proud to have been short-listed as award finalists for both awards following the refit carried out by the team on luxury yacht Paramour. She is an outstanding CMN 43m displacement yacht that undergone an extensive redesign and refurbishment ahead of the 2012 charter season. She was re-launched in May last year.

The refit works carried out by the PURE team, headed up by Nic Clarke, made her one of the most desirable charter yachts in her class due to superior entertainment areas such as the new beach club style sun deck featuring two granite topped bars (one with BBQ), large Jacuzzi and dining for twelve, and an extended swim platform. These assets are only normally found on larger, more expensive charter vessels.

During the six months of the project the team at PURE carried out primary works including naval architecture and design, a hull extension, paint works, the design and installation of new sundeck layout, custom stainless steel and granite galley completed with new appliances, furniture and upholstery, and works required for compliance and approval to both Lloyds class and Caymans flag acceptance.

We are up against some very stiff competition of some beautiful refits carried out by some of the most successful and reputable shipyards. Even to just reach finalist status is indeed an honour. It’s a great testament to our professional approach to refit projects and to the skills, commitment and effort displayed by our team and recognition of the craftsmanship and value of having a refit carried out by PURE and in Palma de Mallorca.”

Now in its eighth year, the World Superyacht Awards honour the finest new superyacht builds delivered to their owners in the past twelve months and PURE has been short-listed in the ‘Refitted Yacht Award’ category. The winners will be announced on 4 May 2013.

In addition, The International Yacht & Aviation Awards are hosted by design et al, a leading UK interior design magazine. PURE has been short-listed in the Yacht Awards category. The winners will be announced on 19 April 2013.

Regularly chartered in the Mediterranean, superyacht Margaret Ann was well placed in October 2012 for a visit to the Pendennis Palma refit facility and the Owner was keen to bring the vessel back to her original builder. As the Captain, Simon Davison, explained “I had firsthand experience of Pendennis’ attention to detail and professionalism after being Captain onboard Catalyst of Fal during her two refits in Falmouth. I knew the team would be more than capable of executing the refit on Margaret Ann, and as her original builder it was great to be able to return her to the team that knew her so well. This refit has progressed very smoothly, and as such we have already booked to return Margaret Ann to Pendennis Palma in 2014 for the yacht’s 10 year survey.”

Latest 58 m sailing yacht concept by Barracuda Yacht Design

February 05, 2013

Upon the instruction of Ocean Survey Services based at Bodrum in Turkey, Barracuda Yacht Design have finished pre-production plans as well as drawings for their latest 58-metre superyacht concept. Featuring classic undertones, the breathtaking 58 m Barracuda sailing yacht concept represents a spectacular fly-bridge vessel, reminiscent of the most outstanding sailboats from the 1940’s / 1950’s era.

Latest 58 m sailing yacht concept by Barracuda Yacht Design

Latest 58 m sailing yacht concept by Barracuda Yacht Design

On behalf of a discerning client looking to replicate the emotion and beauty of a bygone age, the new 58 m Barracuda yacht design has traditional proportions in the bow and stern with moderate overhangs and a classic-looking white painted deckhouse with varnished timber trim.

Unusual amongst similarly themed concepts, the 58 m Barracuda superyacht design also includes a large, yet discreet fly bridge atop the deckhouse and twelve large windows down the length of the hull, adding an amazing sensory experience from inside the yacht.

A modern underwater profile and options for a retractable dagger-board, furling rig with single point sheeting arrangements and self-tacking, furling staysail are reminders that the design package is very much an innovative and practical arrangement offering comfort, performance and ease of handling. Above all, the accent is on simplified installations and an efficient build process where possible.

With a large, weather protected space for seating in the front half of the fly bridge, twin helming positions at the mid-point and a Jacuzzi and sun-bathing space at the rear, the fly bridge will undoubtedly become a main social focus point of the 58 m Barracuda yacht.

190-foot Barracuda superyacht concept

190-foot Barracuda superyacht concept

A simplified and clean-looking foredeck houses two under-deck tenders, respectively of 6.80m and 9.0m length, launched and recovered via concealed crane. Combined with the 58 m Barracuda luxury yacht’s port side diving centre, this set-up is perfect for scuba and water sports enthusiasts who might be looking to handle plenty of equipment.

Similar to the design of Gulets, at the very aft end of the main deck, Turkish tradition dictates plenty of seating and additional sun-bathing space for all to enjoy.

The deckhouse comprises four main sections: forward most is the bridge which has doors on either side to facilitate convenient entry and exit by the crew. Aft of the bridge, a formal dining area seats twelve around a large table. An already large skylight immediately above the table will provide plenty of natural light, while a removable partition between the dining area and the bridge room offers an option to extend the view forward.

Further aft a widened saloon area has low-level seating to starboard and a TV viewing and separate bar area to port. Further aft a full 60m² covered cockpit area, with part-protected sides offers more relaxed dining and lounging spaces.

58 m Barracuda luxury yacht design

58 m Barracuda luxury yacht design

With guest access via steps leading down from inside the main saloon, the accommodation deck houses individual rooms that follow largely a symmetrical pattern for simplified plumbing and cost effective construction.

A full beam width owner’s suite, with separate office, occupies the aft section, along with four generous en-suite guest spaces. In the centre of the 58 m Barracuda superyacht, fold-down platforms on either side of the hull give way to an impressive starboard side beach club and port side diving centre. Either side platform can be reached from inside the yacht, or via steps leading down from main deck level, discreetly hidden under floor-level hatches.

A large 6m galley and cold room combined, along with a separate food preparation area will afford the chef great culinary opportunities, while stewards will use a dumb-waiter system to transport food and drink up to a point just inside the dining room for speedy and efficient serving.

MLC approved crew quarters comprising 2x en-suite double rooms and 2x en-suite bunk bed style rooms and a spacious crew mess and laundry room, will doubtless ensure a happy and contented crew.

58 m Barracuda Yacht Concept

58 m Barracuda Yacht Concept

Under sail the vessel has a flexible and easy to use sail plan, designed to cope with a wide range of conditions. For light to moderate wind strength of up to around 25 knots, the 58 m Barracuda yacht will use a large furling genoa and for wind strength up to 40 knots, the vessel will use a selftacking, inner furling staysail, acting like a storm jib if required.
