Royal Huisman 48m sailing yacht project 393 by Andre Hoek

September 19, 2011

The prestigious shipyard based in The Netherlands – Royal Huisman – is very proud to announce a very important project, the 48m (156 ft) sailing yacht – Royal Huisman Classic Sloop, created in collaboration with the renowned Dutch naval architect Andre Hoek. The new 48m Royal Huisman sailing yacht hull 393 is one of the two projects the yard is currently working on. Both Royal Huisman projects, the 46m superyacht hull 392 and the 48m sailing yacht hull 393 feature stunning exterior styling and naval architecture by Andre Hoek and the structural design created by the yard in collaboration with Hoek. The yacht will feature stunning interior by Rhoades Young Design studio.

Yard number 393 – 48m/156ft Classic Sloop by Royal Huisman

The owner of the Royal Huisman project 393 was drawn to the Hoek Design team by its reputation for creating modern classics and, more specifically, by the traditional concept the team proposed for this project. Not satisfied with these factors alone, the client drove the design with added developments and refinements to the hull lines of this impressive sloop to reflect the specific objective to enjoy cruising as well as “gentleman’s racing”.

Her elegant hull shape, counter stern, sloping deckhouses and numerous other traditional features speak of civilised and leisurely sailing in a romantic former era. Yet her moderate draft underwater lines, cutter carbon rig and efficient sail handling systems will be extensively optimised for performance – the 48m project 393 by Royal Huisman will be more than capable of holding her own in the present day.

With naval architecture from Hoek Design and a magnificent interior to be conceived by Rhoades Young Design, sailing yacht 393 by Royal Huisman with owner’s project management by MCM (Newport) has the credentials to make her mark wherever her ocean tracks may take her.

Further details of this exceptional project will be released as it progresses through the more detailed phases of development.

The Art of Timeless Design by Andrew Winch – Sailing Yacht Cyclos III

June 13, 2011

The first Superyacht to be designed by Andrew Winch Designs, sailing yacht Cyclos III was delivered in 1990, to the same owner who sails her today.

Ground breaking in design, yacht Cyclos III pushed all boundaries and paved the way for the interior design of future Superyachts. Since her delivery, 21 years ago, she continues to sail extensively and is regularly seen competing in regattas, such as the St. Barts Bucket. Her precise design and quality of build are a testament to her success.

Working closely with the Client, the interior design of sailing yacht Cyclos III encapsulates the owner’s primary desire for functional space within a visually spectacular structure. The result is a timeless, contemporary interior providing privacy, accompanied by all of the luxury one would expect from a yacht of her size and quality. Each space is clearly defined by its function and a subtle use of lighting.

yacht Cyclos III

yacht Cyclos III

A first of its kind, the brief for the interior requested that no wood be visible at all! Her interior, therefore, is adorned in high gloss white, which has stood the test of time and continues to sparkle and reflect the light through the deckhouse windows. An innovative attention to the smallest detail has resulted in an ageless interior. From the free standing furniture to the stainless steel and custom designed thick grained black leather detailing.

Created in a style which might suit an owner who needs every facility but where superfluous and extravagant details are spurned in favour of taste and simplicity. Every interior element responds to a particular need – from running a global business with state of the art communication systems, to enjoying a family holiday in any ocean whatever the weather!

More About Cyclos II:

Royal Huisman completed the building sailing yacht CYCLOS III in 1990. Therefore, she has the distinction of being built country of the Netherlands. CYCLOS III had her yacht design work created by Ron Holland Design and Ron Holland Design. Dubois ketch Twizzle wins Best Custom Yacht at Asia Boating Awards 2011

May 12, 2011

Dubois Naval Architects announced today, that the Royal Huisman built 57.5 m ketch Twizzle was voted Best Custom Yacht at the seventh Asia Boating Awards.

Ketch Twizzle by Royal Huisman - Redman Whiteley Dixon - Dubois Naval Architects

Sailing Yacht Twizzle was selected as the outstanding custom yacht from among nine high quality finalists created by some of the world’s leading custom shipyards and designers. She was also a finalist in the Most Innovative Yacht Design Category.

Nominations for the awards come from polling among readers of Asia-Pacific Boating, with the finalists and ultimate winners chosen by an independent judging panel of industry experts.

Sailing Yacht Twizzle built by Royal Huisman

S/Y Twizzle was designed, inside and out, by Redman Whiteley Dixon with interior décor from Todhunter Earle Associates and naval architecture by Dubois Naval Architects. Her elegant, futuristic design reflects the parallel objectives that she should combine the comfort and amenity of a charter motor yacht with the performance and seakeeping abilities of the finest offshore sailing yachts. Her progressive design and specification presented a host of exciting engineering and build challenges for Royal Huisman, so the award is especially gratifying for the yard team, who thank the Twizzle owners for selecting their yard in Holland to realize their dream.

The Royal Huisman 43m sloop Black Papillon yacht

May 11, 2011

Royal Huisman is working on building a modern 43 metre High Performance ‘beach deck’ sloop called sailing yacht Black Papillon – a modern yet ageless yacht design from Germán Frers, with Rhoades Young being responsible for the interior. For superyacht Black Papillon the concept “less is more” has been important in her conceptualisation.

The focus of the new 43.31m / 142’ Black Papillon yacht has been to design and pre-engineer a contemporary yet ageless yacht – one that selectively incorporates today’s most relevant and effective technical innovations rather than over-indulging in the abundance of technologies now available. Germán Frers and Rhoades Young Design designed a “less is more” superyacht with operational systems every bit as technologically lean and fit for purpose as her sleek lines and powerful rig would suggest.

The 43m sloop called sailing yacht Black Papillon - a Royal Huisman superyacht

The 43m sloop called sailing yacht Black Papillon - a Royal Huisman superyacht

With the elegant sense of purpose that is the hallmark of the legendary Germán Frers, this thoroughbred yacht will be equally in her element whether superyacht racing, family cruising in comfort and style, or passage-making between continents. Her powerful, easily-driven hull form has a narrow forward entry and a subtle sheer that elegantly balances the low profile deckhouse. Below the waterline the moderate draft, fixed bulb keel has a hydro-dynamically efficient short chord length and a fully balanced deep carbon spade rudder. A mechanical steering system ensures maximum sensitivity and responsiveness under sail.

Superyacht Black Papillon’s high aspect carbon rig from Rondal is designed to deliver low aerodynamic drag and powerful windward performance, while the in-boom furling system provides ease of handling even for a small crew. This will be a true sailor’s yacht.

Sailing yacht Black Papillon - a 2013 Royal Huisman superyacht

The Frers team have focused on re-profiling the deck house of the Royal Huisman built 43m sloop Black Papillon yacht; optimising the deck layout – now sporting both main and centre cockpits in addition to the owners’ private cockpit and low-level Beach Deck aft; and further enhancing the GA to provide VIP accommodation for six guests in addition to the full-beam owners’ cabin aft.

The quest for visual simplicity, light weight and minimal clutter has informed every step of the design process. The deck arrangement features margin-free flush deck hatches with concealed hinges, ‘pop up’ all-in-one cleats and fairleads, below-deck anchor system, and below-deck location of all winches except auxiliary drums for racing. A stern garage for the 5.3m tender is neatly situated out of sight beneath the expansive beach deck – itself an arresting feature that speaks of a yacht with attitude and style. With the yacht at anchor, the beach deck provides guests with an attractive and sheltered space for relaxation close to the sea, with grand stairs beckoning access to the swim platform just below. To launch the tender, the swim platform is angled down as a ramp and the stairs are swung up and clear: good examples of neat, smart, multi-functionality. An additional 3.4m crew tender is concealed beneath the foredeck.

Immediately forward of the beach deck, the Black Papillon yacht owners’ cockpit offers secluded relaxation with direct access from the owners’ cabin below. Moving forward, the two independent helming stations occupy an ergonomically designed centre cockpit that offers commanding outboard views and comprehensive control of all sailing operations. A table and three chairs can be added to this cockpit to provide outside dining for up to eight people. Socially interlinked with the centre cockpit, the spacious main guest cockpit is sheltered by a permanent bimini and features a split seating arrangement that ensures exceptional comfort and security for groups of guests, whatever the sea state or angle of heel. This is, almost literally, an expansive area. The space flows seamlessly, via a stylish glass wall that slides down and out of view at the touch of a button, to become an open-air extension of the deck salon just two steps below.

The deck salon of sailing yacht Black Papillon is a calm and elegant space enhanced by stunning natural light and panoramic exterior perspectives, is the social hub of the 43m. To port, a relaxed seating area for reading, conversation and games is complemented by an elevated, all-weather observation lounge offering exceptional views of maritime scenery and events. With the focus on employing relevant technology where it matters most, a further nav. station with autopilot steering is located here, immediately abaft the deckhouse windows. To starboard, a generous dining area offers every comfort and amenity for up to ten guests.

The interior design theme, from Rhoades Young, will focus on the creation of calm and informal interior spaces – contemporary in style but always warm and welcoming rather than cool and clinical. This area of the project remains work in progress but, as a general approach, it can be said that the use of light hues, textured fabrics and informed architectural detailing will ensure the human touch is never absent.

Natural lighting and ventilation will be employed wherever practicable, limiting the demand for energy-intensive technologies and so contributing to the calm and comfortable ambience created by the interior design theme.

Managing Director Alice Huisman notes, “It is well known that Royal Huisman houses a large concentration of expertise, infrastructure and specialist skills, and for customers seeking not just a standard refit but the optimum level of quality, enhancement and added value, the yard has a great deal to offer.

The work at Huisfit can be undertaken either at the Vollenhove yard or at deep water locations elsewhere in Holland to suit the requirements of the project, their owner’s or captain’s.

The comprehensive range of refit services is designed to be tailored to the exact requirements of each individual yacht project, whether modern or classic, sail or motor, from all quality superyacht yards.

Royal Huisman’s facilities for project managers and crew on-site are seen to be at the leading edge of industry practice following a major investment programme in amenities and services in recent years.

When a superyacht project or refit is finished, their owners and captains have the peace of mind of knowing that the work is fully supported by Royal Huisman’s fully manned 24/7 parts and technical advice service. Moreover, the yard will always stand fully behind the quality of its refit work – just as it does for new builds.

IYRS Lectures to focus books on great yachts and great adventures

March 01, 2011

Beginning on March 8, the International Yacht Restoration School will host a series of evening lectures that will focus on books on great yachts and great adventures. During this four-part “Readers’ Series” lecture-goers will be drawn into the fascinating stories of the makings of great yachts, both grand and modest, and the adventures that are had on board.

Marine writer Jack Somer—who has written about many great yachts sailing today, in books and magazine articles—opens the series on Tuesday, March 8 with a remarkable story of boatbuilding: the making of the Dutch-built sailing yacht ATHENA, one of the largest private sailing yachts of the modern era. Other experts taking part in the series, which runs until late April, are author-adventurer Eric Wiberg, Irish yachting historian Hal Sisk, and yacht designer Chuck Paine.

Super Sailing yacht Athena by Royal Huisman

Super Sailing yacht Athena by Royal Huisman

Details on each event in the series follows.

March 8 | 7:30 pm | Jack Somer | Athena – A Classic Schooner for Modern Times

At 295 feet, the three-masted schooner Athena is one of the largest private sailing yachts of the modern era and a yacht that blends technological feats of engineering with the artistry and craftsmanship of fine custom boatbuilding. Marine writer Jack Somer brings the story of this magnificent superyacht—built at Dutch custom-yacht boatbuilder Royal Huisman—to life in a coffee table book he produced with  photographer Louie Psihoyos. The book sums up the chronology of Athena’s creation—from the first day of construction, to the last.

March 29 | 7:30 pm | Eric Wiberg | Round the World in the Wrong Season

Written between 1994 and 2009, Eric Wiberg’s Round the World in the Wrong Season is a memoir of global travel and an unfulfilled college crush. Wiberg’s tale is a self-deprecating, humorous and adventurous first-person account of a young man circling the world in command of a yacht but not in command of his own emotions.

April 12 | 7:30 pm | Hal Sisk | G. L. Watson – The Art and Science of Yacht Design

Irish yachting historian Hal Sisk travels from his homeland to IYRS to talk about author Martin Black’s new book, G. L. Watson – The Art and Science of Yacht Design. A book about the genius of British yacht designer George Lennox Watson (1851 – 1904), Black looks at the designer’s work, including sleek racing yachts and palatial steam yachts. In the book, he also sheds new light on the development of the Big Class cutters, the fierce rivalry between Kaiser Wilhelm and Edward, Prince of Wales and the inside story of the epic struggles to regain the America’s Cup.

April 26 | 7:30 pm | Chuck Paine | My Yacht Designs and the Lessons They Taught Me

Prolific American yacht designer Chuck Paine comes to IYRS to talk about his book My Yacht Designs and the Lessons They Taught Me, which tells his life story and follows his successful career in yacht design—a long career during which he created over a thousand yachts.  In an engaging voice, Paine tells about the tales of success, the failures, the occasional pure bad fortune, and the lessons learned over a lifetime involved with boats.

All lectures begin at 7:30 pm at IYRS Restoration Hall (449 Thames Street, Newport). Lectures are free for members of IYRS and the Museum of Yachting and $7 for non-members. Café Zelda (528 Thames Street, Newport) coordinates their dining schedule with the series on lecture nights.

90m Sailing yacht Athena – the largest superyacht to be refitted in New Zealand

January 11, 2011

The 90.00m (295′ 3″) Royal Huisman sailing yacht Athena is due to arrive in New Zealand to receive a superyacht refit by Orams Marine Services. One of the world’s largest private sailing yachts of the modern era and the largest all-aluminum yacht built to date, the three-masted schooner Athena is a remarkable super yacht.

S/Y Athena is built entirely of high-tensile Alustar and she is a giant which displaces a staggering 1,177 tons. Not only is she the largest but she has been created to the highest standards of traditional craftsmanship whilst incorporating inspiring technical achievement.

The refit of super yacht Athena is being carried out by Orams Marine Services. Established in 1947, Orams Marine Services have developed a reputation as a premium provider of building and maintenance services for all types of vessels. Orams Marine Services were the first company to bring a superyacht into New Zealand for an interior alteration and refit in 1987. Since then they have established themselves as a key player in New Zealand’s superyacht refit industry.

Managing director of Orams Marine Services Craig Park confirmed the exterior of sailing yacht Athena is being re-painted and the interior re-varnished. “It’s the biggest boat to be refitted in New Zealand,” he says. “It’s a full re-paint; it’s the first since the launch. It’s really a cosmetic re-fit although all five engines will be serviced.”

ATHENA’s three masts soar 197 feet above the deck supporting 28,632 square feet of sail. Her beauty is obvious, but yacht Athena is also the sort of marvel we have come to expect from Royal Huisman and the myriad Dutch industries pressed into service to ensure her timely delivery while meeting the owner’s demand for the highest quality.

Yacht Twizzle’s ‘green’ credentials are particularly commendable. She is certified to the highest standards for operation in the world’s most sensitive marine environments, including Alaska.

Further demonstrating their commitment to the quality of the ocean environment, Twizzle‘s thoughtful owners have put in place a policy to off-set the carbon emissions of all her fuel use. All greenhouse gas emissions arising from Twizzle’s forthcoming cruising programme will be balanced, tonne for tonne, by compensating emissions savings from green energy projects.

Sailing yacht Twizzle is actually the second Dubois design to be built by Royal Huisman Shipyard. The first was a 42ft racing yacht built way back in 1978! It has been a long wait for us to have the pleasure of working with this wonderful organisation again.
