The Innovation Awards, organized by NMMA and judged by BWI, recognize products that best meet the following criteria: innovative distinction from other products currently being manufactured; benefit to the marine industry and/or consumer; practicality; cost-effectiveness; and availability to the consumer within 60 days of award receipt.

“The number of entries this year exceeded our expectations, and all of the products we reviewed paint a bright future for boating industry evolution,” noted Zuzana Prochazka, Innovation Awards’ Judge Chair, Editor of Talk of the Dock, Technical Editor of Latitudes & Attitudes, and President of BWI Board of Directors. “The winners recognized at the boat show today are a testament to the ongoing commitment to boating ingenuity necessary to the future of our industry, and we’re excited to see how these products adapt in the marketplace.”

In addition to Prochazka, rounding out the panel of judges for this year’s Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail Innovation Awards are Ed Sherman, Educational Programming Director at the American Boat & Yacht Council, (ABYC); Jan Mundy, co-founder of DIY Boat Owner and writer; Lenny Rudow, Boat Review Editor for Boats.com and Electronics Editor for BoatUS and Marlin magazines; Alan Jones, Executive Editor for Boating World magazine; Elaine Lembo, Cruising World deputy editor; and Mark Corke, author, owner of the On Board with mark Corke blog and Contributing Writer to Soundings and Lakeland Boating magazines.

Thirteen Innovation Awards and two Honorable Mentions were presented in the following thirteen categories:

Applications and Mobile Software

Beneteau Toucan Dealer App by Jester Communications: This interactive selling tool includes video, brochures, spec sheets and a configuring tool that allows dealers to create a personalized boat and a quote right on the dock. “This app,” said Elaine Lembo, “Represents a step up in the professionalism and expediency with which dealers can do their job and may even result in greater sales overall.”

Runabout and Fishing Craft to 24’

Pro Skiff Series by Mako: The Mako’s innovative AIV hull shape delivers superior stability, good rough water handling and a greater load carrying capacity. “After running this boat, I came to really appreciate what can be done on a 17’ foot boat,” said Alan Jones. “And it’s an affordable package of boat, engine and trailer that lowers the barrier to entry for anyone thinking of getting into boating.”

Cruisers (25′ to 60′ including fishing craft)

SLX 250 yacht tender by Sea Ray: The 250 incorporates Sea Ray’s Quiet Ride Technology, a comprehensive effort to lessen the total noise and vibration level by 20 – 50% depending on a person’s location on the boat. Jan Mundy commented “This makes a huge difference– it’ll be nice to actually hear yourself think after a long day on the water.”

PWC & Jet Boats

Sea Doo RXP-X 260 by Bombardier: Sea Doo’s ErgoLock seat, angled footwells, and T3 hull combine to create a PWC with incredible turning ability and maximum comfort designed to build confidence in its rider. “It made me an instant expert,” said Alan Jones who shared his YouTube racing video with us. “I was the cock of the walk on this supercharged muscle machine.”

Sailboats

Sailing yacht Oceanis Series 48 by Beneteau: The electric transom on the Oceanis Series opens up the cockpit and adds three feet to the boat, but only when you want it. “This is a great way to expand the outdoor living area on a boat,” said Lenny Rudow. “It almost makes me want to go somewhere on a sailboat.” For any of you who know Lenny, you’ll appreciate what a powerful endorsement that is.

Docking and Fendering Equipment

V-Lift by Sunstream Boat Lifts: The V-lift is twice as fast as existing air lifts, has no air hoses or power pack to contend with, and is perfectly portable because it can be towed with a boat from slip to slip. “This is a great modular unit,” said Ed Sherman. “It makes perfect sense for boats up to 11,000 pounds, and you can even put an outboard right on it and drive it to where you need it.”

Honorable Mention: Eel Shore Power Cord by Marinco

Consumer Electronics and Software

InReach by Delorme: This global satellite communicator affordably delivers two-way texting, delivery confirmation, and SOS messaging anywhere in the world. Lenny commented, “With global two-way texting, it might even satisfy the communication needs of my twin 12-year olds.”

Honorable Mention: MS-AV700 Audio and Video Entertainment Package by Fusion Electronics

Consumer Installed Non-Electronic Hardware

SCUBA Donning Assistance System by Dive Mate: This simple and affordable add-on can help anyone don their dive gear using an insert that goes into an existing rod holder. “It runs on the KISS principle,” said Jan Mundy. “It keeps things simple as it turns your fishing boat into your user-friendly dive boat.”

Water Sports & Equipment

Battle Saddle by Release Marine: The Battle Saddle functions like a classic fighting chair in the cockpit of a sport fishing boat but only takes up one third of the space which is perfect as it was designed for boats 30-40 feet. “As cockpits continue to do double duty for entertaining and fishing, the space gets to be more of a premium,” said Lenny Rudow. “This can be used by everyone, from kids to really big guys and that opens up the fishing action to everyone aboard.”

Outboard Engines

DF300 AP by Suzuki Marine: Suzuki’s Selective Rotation feature combines standard and counter-rotation operation into the same outboard by switching an electronic circuit which eliminates the need to buy a dedicated counter-rotation outboard. “This is a brilliant ground-breaking design,” said Ed Sherman. “This will save dealers money in inventory, and consumers selling their used twins will now be able to sell them one at a time and make them into whatever the seller needs.”

Consumer Safety Equipment

AIS Watchmate Vision by Vesper: The WatchMate is a dedicated AIS display that combines a touchscreen, WiFi and NMEA 2000 in a compact unit and adds iPad and iPhone apps for added functionality. “Eliminating the clutter enhances this products usability,” said Elaine Lembo. “You can instantly see targets around you and who’s headed your way on a clear color screen.”

Pontoon & Deckboats

Ambassador by Avalon: The Ambassador is feature-packed and has the industry’s only electric reclining rear loungers and pop-up wine rack. Alan Jones may have created a new category when describing the boat’s many yacht-like features. “This isn’t a tri-toon so much as it is a yacht-toon. I can’t wait to test one out for over-night weekends.”

Environmental Award

Propane Outboard by Lehr: The Lehr outboard is powered by propane from many sources including the small green BBQ bottles. With zero evaporative emissions and no winterization needed, Lehr makes sure some boaters never need to carry gasoline aboard. Mark Corke noted “I’d love to put this on the tender to my diesel powered sailboat and never think about gas again.”

The 2012 Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail runs February 16-20.

Boating is Big Business in Chicago

Chicago is a hub for the recreational boating industry, providing easy access to waterways and inland lakes throughout the Midwest. More than 5,000 boats dock annually in nine marinas across the city’s lakefront. With the addition of the 31st Street Harbor, Chicago boaters will find an additional 1,000 slips, making it easier to access Lake Michigan from downtown. The Chicago Harbors generate more than $30 million in annual revenue for the Chicago Park District and provide hundreds of jobs for local residents in hospitality, marina maintenance, boating instruction, boat repair, and more.

The annual tradition of boat and sportshows in Chicago generates significant local and state revenue, as hundreds of dealers and manufacturers throughout the Midwest come to town and sell thousands of new boats and marine accessories. Companies that exhibit at boat shows typically generate between 35-50 percent of their annual sales at the events. There were an estimated $245 million in new boat and accessory sales in the State of Illinois in 2010 and 374,000 registered boats as of 2009. Recreational boating has an estimated $1.54 billion annual economic impact in Illinois, employing nearly 10,000 Americans at approximately 705 boating businesses across the State.

Promising alternative biofuel tested by NMMA

November 21, 2011

Today, the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) has released the findings from preliminary evaluations on isobutanol-gasoline blends supplied by Gevo. The tests were led by NMMA and the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) as the recreational boating industry explores alternative biofuels in response to the U.S. introduction of gasoline containing fifteen percent ethanol, commonly known as E15.

E15 - gasoline containing fifteen percent ethanol

E15 - gasoline containing fifteen percent ethanol

The Environmental Protection Agency recently approved the use of E15 for model year 2001 and newer cars and trucks. However, the boating industry has found that fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol causes severe damage to yacht engines. While marine engines are not currently approved by the EPA for use with E15, misfueling at the pump is a danger for boaters unaware that E15 is not compliant with yacht engines.

In fact, the Department of Energy (DOE) recently announced results from tests conducted on engines using E15 which revealed performance issues like stalling, corrosion leading to oil or fuel leaks, increased emissions and damaged valves, rubber fuel lines and gaskets. These results reinforced the recreational boating industry’s concern that E15 is not a suitable fuel for yacht engines.

In contrast, the testing conducted on isobutanol reveals it could be a promising biofuel alternative to E15.

The NMMA and ABYC isobutanol evaluations tested components, including older fiberglass tanks, and engines during on-the-water testing on inboard, outboard, jet pump and two-stroke outboard engines. The tests showed isobutanol to produce no more emissions than pure, EPA-approved test gasoline, while producing 30 percent more energy than ethanol. Support from Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) and Volvo made the testing possible through the provisions of product, personnel and testing equipment.

What’s more, the DOE has designated isobutanol a “drop-in biofuel,” meaning it can be used to displace petroleum under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, and increasing its use could help reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.  Support from Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) and Volvo Penta made the testing possible through the provisions of product, personnel and testing equipment. Gevo, Inc., producer of isobutanol, supplied the fuel for the testing.

NMMA President Thom Dammrich says of the NMMA and ABYC isobutanol research, “We are pleased with the results of the evaluation on isobutanol and look forward to more testing on this, and other, important alternatives to E15. We know E15 causes significant damage to boat engines and therefore rushing it to the market is irresponsible and an unnecessary step, especially in light of the promising test results on isobutanol.”

NMMA member before Congress on E15

November 04, 2011

On Wednesday, Mr. David Hilbert spoke before Congress in the name of NMMA about E15 and marine engines. Mr. Hilbert, thermodynamic development engineer for Mercury Marine, a division of the Brunswick Corporation, took part in a Congressional hearing before the Subcommittee on Energy and Environment of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. A number of specialists testified on E15 and its effects before the Subcommittee. Mr. Hilbert was responsible for the research on E15 and its effects on marine engines as shown by the Department of Energy in reports released in late October.

Mr. Hilbert’s testimony highlighted the damaging effects that E15 has on marine engines, and noted that more testing is needed to further identify how E15 will affect engines and fuel systems under various conditions. Mercury’s testing showed significant problems with outboard engines, including severe damage to engine components and an increase in exhaust emissions, reinforcing the recreational yachting industry’s concern that E15 is not a suitable fuel for marine engines.

The Subcommittee heard testimony from representatives of the EPA, the American Petroleum Institute, Gevo, the Energy Biosciences Institute, the University of Wyoming Institute of Environment and Natural Resources and the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association. Subcommittee Chairman Andy Harris (R-MD), received David’s testimony favorably and the committee members had no questions for Mr. Hilbert after the research was presented. The testimony and accompanying  photos will be printed in the official record of the hearing.

NMMA President Thom Dammrich says, “We are pleased that Congress has shown an ongoing interest in this important research. NMMA is committed to continued research on E15 and its effects on marine engines. We hope that before any E15 is offered to the public, a thorough investigation will be completed so that boaters can safely fuel their vessels without incident now, and in the future.”

NMMA Canada about the importance of Recreational Boating Industry

November 02, 2011

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) Canada has had a speech before the House of Commons Finance Committee, that prepares for the 2012 federal budget. NMMA Canada was happy to be given the possibility to discuss the recreational boating industry’s main challenges and future opportunities and how government can be involved.

NMMA logo

“NMMA is delighted to have the opportunity to tell our dedicated members of the House of Commons Finance Committee the significant impact the recreational boating industry has on Canada’s economy – from creating jobs to providing a means for middle-class citizens to enjoy our country’s great outdoors,” said Sara Anghel, Executive Director. “Recreational boating is also a major contributor to tourism in Canada and with the announcement of a tourism strategy from the Harper government we look forward to continuing to grow boating and the economic strength of Canada.”

NMMA’s presentation today helped ensure that the Canadian government understands the significance of the recreational boating industry to the national economy. There are an estimated six million boaters in Canada and of those six million boaters, most are middle-class. In addition, NMMA’s most recent economic impact study (2006) revealed that the recreational boating industry produced close to 400,000 jobs – directly and indirectly – across the country, including an estimated 7,000 well paying manufacturing jobs. What’s more, the Canadian recreational boating industry exports more than $600 million worth of product to international markets, including the U.S.

Specifically, during the hearing today, NMMA reinforced the importance of policy and expenditure initiatives fostering an environment that enables more Canadians to enjoy yachting, while also supporting local communities and industries which rely on the recreational boating sector.

US Department of Energy finds serious damage to marine engines from E15

October 27, 2011

In October 21, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy announced the results of two studies on the impacts of using fuel that is 15 percent ethanol in volume (E15) in marine engines. The studies were concentrated on engines produced by two marine engine manufactures, Volvo Penta and Mercury Marine, both members of National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA).

The National Marine Manufacturers Association

The National Marine Manufacturers Association

The long-awaited reports show significant problems with outboard, stern drive and inboard engines.  Results of the reports show severe damage to engine components and an increase in exhaust emissions, reinforcing the recreational boating industry’s concern that E15 is not a suitable fuel for marine engines.

Emissions and durability testing compared E15 fuel and fuel containing zero percent ethanol (E0) and examined exhaust emissions, exhaust gas temperature, torque, power, barometric pressure, air temperature, and fuel flow. Specifically, the report showed degraded emissions performance outside of engine certification limits as well as increased fuel consumption. In separate testing on engine durability, each tested engine showed deterioration, including two of the three outboard engines, with damages severe enough to prevent them from completing the test cycle. The E0 test engines did not exhibit any fuel related issues.

NMMA worked with its manufacturer members in securing the resources and facilitating the testing for these reports. NMMA supports further testing that will provide additional understanding about the negative effects of E15 on marine engines.

NMMA President Thom Dammrich says, “Current proposals by the ethanol industry to increase the amount of ethanol in gasoline should seriously concern all boaters and owners of other small engine equipment.  Although NMMA strongly supports renewable fuels as a means to reduce America’s dependence on foreign sources of oil and improve the environment, there is  growing evidence that ethanol is not the answer to America’s energy challenge.”

For more information, please read the full versions of the Emissions and Durability test  or the Fuel Endurance test from the Department of Energy. For questions  please contact Lauren Dunn at 202-280-6928 or ldunn@nmma.org.

Both Volvo Penta and Mercury Marine provided test engines as well as the testing facilities. The U.S. Department of Energy approved the final analysis of the results.
