U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to release $120,897 for Front Street Shipyard

May 14, 2013

As part of the Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) program, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will provide the Maine Department of Transportation (DOT) with $120,897 in support of waterfront improvements at the premier yacht yard, Front Street Shipyard, in Belfast. Front Street Shipyard is providing matching funds for the $241,795 project. The waterfront rehabilitation comprises new slips as well as moorings for transient boats, which will be utilised for visitors and tourists in the mid-coast region.

With the BIG grant, Front Street Shipyard will add 12 new slips with shorepower on the dock face, plus five 40-foot harbor floats, all of which will be devoted to transient recreational boaters. Bathrooms, showers, and wireless internet for visiting boaters will be installed in the new marina. Over the next year, the yard will also add 21 new transient moorings. The new infrastructure will offer dockage and moorings to yachts visiting Maine from around the world.

Since Front Street Shipyard’s inception in 2011, the marina and service yard have attracted dozens of visiting yachts as large as 122 feet. These recreational vessels have bolstered the local economy through spending and job creation. Outside of the BIG grant, Front Street Shipyard is making additional improvements to continue attracting yachts, including the acquisition of a new 485-ton boat lift this summer, which is almost three times the size of the yard’s current lift.

“With Front Street Shipyard’s ongoing growth in capabilities and space, we need these additional slips and moorings to accommodate new customers and cruisers coming to the area,” said JB Turner, president of Front Street Shipyard. “The BIG grant will help make mid-coast Maine the international yachting destination that it’s evolving into.”

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service awarded more than $11.2 million in competitive grants to 15 states for projects to support recreational boating. Grantees like Maine DOT and Front Street Shipyard use BIG funds to construct, renovate, and maintain facilities with features for transient boats that are 26 feet or more in length and used for recreation.

“These grants, funded by fishing and boating enthusiasts, have helped communities across the nation build and enhance recreational boating facilities that provide recreational opportunities while supporting jobs and economic growth,” said Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe. “This program is a win-win situation for recreational boaters, conservation initiatives and job creation.”

Front Street Shipyard recently received American Boat Builders and Repairers Association’s annual “Boatyard of the Year” award for 2013. The yard now has 72,555 square feet of space for yacht storage and 10,320 square feet of shop space on a six-acre property with 1,500 feet of waterfront. There is an additional seven acres of off-site storage space. Front Street Shipyard currently employs more than 100 people.

New 485-US-Ton Hoist for Front Street Shipyard

February 13, 2013

Front Street Shipyard on the Belfast, Maine, waterfront is proceeding with plans to upgrade its lifting capabilities with a 485-US-ton (440-metric-ton) hoist. Having obtained the final approval to construct new piers, the owners of Front Street Shipyard are investing in a hoist large enough to service a greater contingent of international superyachts.

They are also beginning the local permitting process to expand their facilities with a new building that will be large enough to allow the new lift inside. Front Street Shipyard’s expanded capabilities are expected to grow the international yachting community in Maine.

The new hoist is on order from Cimolai, an advanced metal construction company in Italy. Cimolai’s team will build the hoist’s components in Italy and ship them to Belfast for assembly. Front Street Shipyard’s owners expect the hoist to be fully operational by August 1. The existing 165-ton hoist will remain the workhorse of the yard.

“With these new capabilities, we expect to attract even more diverse yachts to Maine,” said JB Turner, president of Front Street Shipyard. “We also expect be able to generate over 40 new jobs in an expanded facility, so we hope the City of Belfast will continue to work with us in growing our business .”

Front Street Shipyard has begun the permitting process to expand their facility with a new 24,000-sq ft building. Should this new structure receive approval, it will accommodate some of the larger yachts the yard will attract with the new hoist.

Since the company launched in January 2011, Front Street Shipyard has built an expansive waterfront facility. Their projects have included refits on a 106-foot Burger motoryacht, a 90-foot Doggersbank motoryacht, and an 86-foot Swan sailboat.

Currently undergoing refits are a Lyman Morse 90′ motoryacht, a custom 122′ classic, an Ocean 80, a 92′ Palmer Johnson ketch, and an 80′ Burger motoryacht. They also currently service and store 130 boats. The planned expansion will increase that capacity as well.

Expansion of Front Street Shipyard

January 02, 2013

The current effort of Front Street Shipyard is to expand with more land, facilities as well as equipment. The owners of Front Street Shipyard have intentions to lease or purchase city property on which they will construct a further boat shop. The new facility would bring enough work for at least 40 new jobs, in addition to the workforce, which is already approaching 100 employees.

The new expansion is part of Front Street Shipyard’s second phase of growth. Since launching the company in January 2011, Front Street Shipyard has erected an expansive waterfront facility and also purchased neighboring Belfast Boat Yard. Front Street Shipyard is also considering investing in a 300-metric-ton marine hoist that will haul superyachts.

“We’re proud of how quickly and efficiently we’ve been able to grow here in Belfast so far,” said JB Turner, president of Front Street Shipyard. “The town and its residents have been amazingly supportive, and we’d like to continue attracting bigger yachts and more work to this region. We hope to see Belfast become a major yachting center on the east coast.”

In only two years, Front Street Shipyard has grown into the Northeast’s largest shipyard north of Newport, Rhode Island. With the addition of expanded facilities and a 300-ton Travelift, Front Street Shipyard will be equipped to service some of the larger superyachts in the world.

The yard now has 72,555 square feet of space for yacht storage and 10,320 square feet of shop space on a six-acre property with 1,500 feet of waterfront. There is an additional seven acres of off-site storage space. Front Street Shipyard currently employs 96 people.

After several years of successful collaboration between Hodgdon and SP Gurit / High Modulus, James will be leaving the engineering firm to join Hodgdon‘s existing yacht building design and engineering team of 11 and take over its leadership on January 1, 2013. James brings a breadth of superyacht knowledge and experience in the structural engineering of advanced composite construction to Hodgdon’s already broad experience base.

James holds a MEng in Aeronautical Engineering from Bristol University in the UK and has served in a variety of consulting and management roles in a structural engineering capacity including some of the world’s most notable superyacht and aviation projects.

James has a special connection to Maine and Hodgdon, as he met his wife while both were consulting on a Hodgdon project and were engaged while on a canoe trip in Maine. James is an avid outdoorsman though since settling down is less likely to repeat his more extreme outdoor feats such as having climbed Kilamanjaro and high bungee jumping.

The excellent working relationship between SP Gurit / High Modulus and Hodgdon will likely continue as the demand for both supplemental structural engineering and SP Gurit’s SmartPac ® kits warrants.

James will be present with the Hodgdon team at the Monaco Yacht Show.

The addition of Belfast Boatyard adds 500 feet of deep-water frontage, 22 slips, 20 moorings and harbor floats. This expansion will increase the yard’s service and storage capabilities for existing and future customers.

“We purchased Belfast Boatyard as part of a strategic growth plan,” says Front Street Shipyard’s president, JB Turner. “Our initial goal was to create a yard equipped to service most any yacht that visits northern New England. We’ve reached that goal.”

The Belfast Boatyard property will eventually house Front Street Shipyard’s business office and possibly crew accommodations. Front Street now has 72,555 square feet of space for yacht storage and 10,320 square feet of shop space on a six-acre property with 1,500 feet of waterfront. There are five storage buildings and an additional 6.5 acres of off-site storage. Front Street Shipyard currently employs 82 people, and the management team hopes to grow its workforce with the additional work facilitated through the purchase of Belfast Boatyard.

Front Street Shipyard has grown into the Northeast’s largest shipyard north of Newport, Rhode Island. The yard recently erected a sixth building on the waterfront that includes facilities for transient boaters and additional boat storage. Front Street Shipyard also welcomed Carbon Ocean Yachts of Bristol, Rhode Island, into its facility earlier this year, and began production of Southport Boats in conjunction with Kenway Corporation of Augusta, Maine, beginning in 2011.

Race I on the 13th of August 2011. Results: it’s WHISPER!
Under a beautiful Maine sky and fair breezes the Shipyard Cup fleet saw a great day of sailing. After a one hour delay to let the breeze build to a pleasant 10-15kts, the staggered start spread the fleet out over 52 minutes. After 3 hours of racing on a delightful afternoon WHISPER grabbed top honours for the day with WHITEHAWK and SUMURUN not far behind. The finish offered a bit of excitement watching VIRAGO, SCHEHERAZADE and ISOBEL battle it out for 4th place with SCHEHERAZADE and VIRAGO exchanging leads several times in the closing meters to the finish. The final order of finishing was: WHSIPER (116′), WHITEHAWK(92′), SUMURUN(94′), VIRAGO(100′), SCHEHERAZADE(154′), ISOBEL(76′), TENACIOUS(115′), and CHRISTOPHER(150′).

SCHEHERAZADE WINS RACE II on the 14th of August 2011, WHISPER OVERALL WINNER

When the Sunday breeze built to a solid 8-10kts, first gun at 13:00 gave the start to the second and final day of Shipyard Cup racing.  The staggered start saw some early strategy as Isobel followed by Whisper then Virago diverted from the track of the earlier starters in the hopes of finding a lift from the southern tip of Southport Island en route to the first turning mark.

By the time the fleet was headed for home the low cloud ceiling was reducing visibility and the air became very light. The first to emerge from the fog was yacht SCHEHERAZADE who led the fleet most of the way to top day 2 honors.   The crowd of spectators, including quite a number that worked on the SCHEHERAZADE build, could not have been happier to cheer the hometown favourite.

Hodgdon Yachts President, Tim Hodgdon added:  “This year’s Shipyard Cup was another fantastic event with an impressive fleet of world class sailing yachts.  It was incredible to witness WHITEHAWK racing SCHEHERAZADE, both vessels from the hand of Bruce King, both extraordinary sailboats.  WHITEHAWK probably the first large boat designed by Bruce at the beginning of his career, SCHEHERAZADE the last, with a tremendous portfolio in between.  The two boats are 30 years apart in design, of varying styling but with equally beautiful ketch sail plans.  These are two of the world’s most magnificent sailboats”.

Race Organizers announced next year’s Shipyard Cup is scheduled for 10-12 August 2012.
