Top 10 Best Aft Decks on Luxury Yachts

August 24, 2016

Written by Rebecca Pascoe

What makes a superior aft deck?

To an extent, the response to this question is personal to each individual who answers. The aft deck is perhaps the most important location on a yacht, whether it is a private or charter yacht. One of it’s core roles is the social interface between the outside ocean world and the yacht’s interior. The aft deck is certainly prime real estate in luxury yacht terms, however there are many different design responses attempting to achieve the ultimate.  Lets have a look at a selection of them.

Sleek and sexy performance sailing yachts naturally have a beamy layout for spacious aft decks, whilst large motor yachts are designed specifically with social areas and aft decks in mind and they often have multiple decks available. Aft decks provide space for al fresco dining, relaxing on and enjoying cocktails at sunset. They provide access to the water for swimming or boarding the tender and they present a first impression to visitors when the yacht is at anchor.

GillSchmid Design has two pools – or is that 4?

Some of the top 10 best aft decks on luxury yachts are quite unique in appearance and styling. With comfortable couches and large tables, they offer the best place on board a luxury superyacht to chill out with friends or family.

Alfa Nero was early to have a very large swimming pool on her aft deck.

Alfa Nero was early to have a very large swimming pool on her aft deck.

Below is a personal selection of the top ten vessels that have glorious and amazing aft decks:

1. Quatroelle – the 88m Quatroelle is all about massive exterior aft decks where guests can feel the breeze while watching the sun rise and set. Clever touches include technical marvels, a section of the big stern platform lowers into the sea. The yacht also has exterior stairs on all of its five decks for easy access to cabins. After a day in the sun, there’s nothing better than cooling off in the bridge deck infinity pool.

2. Indian Empress – this superyacht is famous for starry parties on her sprawling aft deck. There are flowing rounds of seating, a marble bar, plenty of space to dance the night away. Dance to music provided by a professional DJ positioned on the sun deck above. The Indian Empress is very popular with people from around the world and makes an excellent charter yacht. The upper aft deck table alone can seat about 30 guests. Hold a party and you’ll essentially be running a nightclub.

3. Alfa Nero – the Alfa Nero has one of the best aft decks you can find on a luxury yacht. This trail blazer of a superyacht has an awesome eye-catching aft deck that looks cool and trendy. The floor of the 7 x 3.5 metre pool lifts hydraulically to deck level and turns the aft deck into a dance floor or helipad. You’ll just have to remember if you’re choppering your guests home at midnight or inviting them to stay on for a late night swim. As well as the aft deck, there’s a club-like upper salon.

4. Maryah – everyone likes a good mystery. The Maryah is ultra-private but what we do know about her is quite fascinating. The hull began life as a Russian research vessel launched by the Polish Szczecinska Yard in 1990. After the rebuild this superyacht had sweeping curves, accommodation for 54 guests, a cinema and a helipad. Included in the design were three aft decks, a sun deck, a beach club and a profusion of fold-down terraces.

5. Luna – her main aft deck is vast, about one third of the yacht’s overall length. When the weather cools, the massive beach club provides a chic shelter with an on-deck feeling. Other explorer yachts look quite dull in comparison to the Luna. The huge aft deck is the perfect area for a cocktail party or any other special occasion like al fresco dining by candlelight.

6. Zefira – winner of the Sailing Yacht of the Year Award in 2011’s superyacht awards, the Zefira is ideal for loafing on deck during long, lazy yacht charter vacations with family and friends. She is big and sleek with long clean lines and uncluttered decks. The beautifully designed aft deck dovetails perfectly with the light and bright Remi Tessier interior design. Start your day with a delicious breakfast on the aft deck.

7. Ester III – this 66 m motor yacht’s interior spaces have been planned as carefully as the exterior. With protection from the sun, wind, rain and cold, the aft deck has a stunning bar up top including a large glass backed swimming pool. Relax on one of the sun beds during the day and then enjoy a tasty meal in the evening outdoors on the large aft deck that has been transformed into an exquisite dining area.

8. Invictus – the Invictus is all about volume. The beautifully designed, spacious water-level aft deck is made larger still by a vast, fold-out, bathing platform and behind it all, there’s a well-stocked bar. It’s no wonder that the aft deck is one of the most popular spots onboard. The garage beyond the aft deck can hold two 8.35 m tenders including a gorgeous Comitti.

9. Galactica Star – the sleek design and space is what’s so impressive on the superyacht, the Galactica Star. Access to the awesome aft deck is made easy thanks to two brilliantly lit stairways either side of the beach club. This is ideal for guests onboard. The water, either in the main deck pool or off the bathing platform, is never out of reach. Relax on one of the aft deck’s sun beds while watching the sun go down at anchor.

10. Axioma – is ideal for a superyacht holiday, perfect for outdoor living. The slightly different, yet attractive aft deck is supplemented with a bridge deck bar, spa pool and mouth-watering al fresco dining options. It’s a chilled out, private feeling aft deck, if you need any more sun this is the place to be. The swimming platform also transforms from the grand entrance into a sprawling space for sunbathing, just a few steps from the sea and the pool.

Glasshape to feature DuraShield Marine superyacht glass chosen by The World’s Finest Private and Charter Yachts at METS 2015

November 17, 2015

Written by zuzana

Glasshape will be attending the world’s largest marine equipment trade show, METSTRADE, introducing its DuraShield superyacht glass, chosen by the world’s finest private and charter yachts and engineered as an answer to delamination in windscreens and windows. This was the product of choice for such striking vessels as Palmer Johnson motor yacht KHALILAH, boasting the largest windows that have ever been installed on a superyacht built in North America. The show will open its doors in Amsterdam RAI today, on November 17, and will run until Thursday, November 19, 2015.

Designed specifically to address delamination issues, a unique, high-performance interlayer developed by Glasshape is incorporated into the manufacturing process. Overcoming the delamination typically seen in marine windshields and windows, DuraShield Marine retains clarity and high levels of light transmission.

“The number one issue faced by the marine industry when it comes to glazing solutions is that of delamination. Most laminates react when exposed to moisture or adhesives which, over a short period of time, leads to delamination. That delamination not only looks unsightly, but presents major concerns in terms of visibility and structural integrity.

Delta Superyacht Invictus with Ezone by Glasshape

“Our high-performance interlayer is engineered to address this. It doesn’t react adversely to moisture and we’ve tested it with the leading brands used in the industry to tip-out with-out any delamination issues since we launched the range,” said Richard Duckworth, Glasshape’s head of marketing.

An amazing number of the world’s finest private and charter yachts feature the Glasshape products, including the impressive glass areas on such outstanding vessels as Khalilah, Delta superyacht Albatross and McMullen&Wing expedition charter yacht Big Fish.

DuraShield marine is used for pilot houses and, when used in conjunction with Glasshape’s product Ezone, eliminates the need for double glazing, resulting in remarkable weight savings. On Invictus yacht by Delta Marine – the vessel on which Glasshape introduced Ezone to the marine industry – the build team was able to save over one tonne of weight in glass.

METS to once again feature New Zealand Pavilion

October 13, 2014

Written by zuzana

Next month will see the New Zealand Pavilion return to METS. Kiwi companies will be turning the focus back on innovation as well as quality. When METS kicks off in Amsterdam’s RAI on November 18, the New Zealand Pavilion will be packed full of companies ready to position their products against the world’s best.

It’s been a great year for Sealegs. The world-leader in amphibious technology was thrust into the spotlight when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were whisked across Auck-land Harbour and on to dry land without getting their feet wet before an adoring crowd. Now, for the first time at METS, Sealegs will exhibit a working demonstration of Sealegs’ amphibious technology at stand 02.222.

Auckland-based Sealegs will unveil and present its amphibious technology kit that will enable European boat manufacturers to create their own amphibious craft and extend their product range. Sealegs has over 900 amphibious craft in more than 35 countries, and there has been a strong uptake already among reputable Middle Eastern and Australasian boatbuilders who are making use of Sealegs amphibious technology kits on their own craft. The Sealegs team also looks forward to meeting with a wider audience, including superyacht skippers, crew and designers, to discuss the merits of amphibious tenders for the comfort of owners and guests.

Due to demand, Fastmount are now producing its popular Maxi Metal clips in both five-kg pull out, and ten-kg pull out versions as stock items. The MC-05 and MC-10 Maxi Metal clips are designed to meet the needs of demanding applications that require fire protection and heavy load bearing.

Ideally suited to aluminium plate substrate, marble veneer or aluminium honeycomb pan-els; panels can easily be recovered and refitted in any sequence. The Fastmount team will be on stand 2.226 in the New Zealand Pavilion and are looking forward to discussing how their Maxi Metal Clips can help to improve performance.

Glasshape have the answer to delamination issues in windscreens and windows.

The company, which has built a reputation on providing glass shaped to fit challenging designs on award-winning yachts, has a full range of glass products suitable for internal and external applications and includes DuraShield Marine; engineered as an answer to delamination in windscreens and windows.

Glasshape is bringing its turnkey approach for superyachts to the benefit of European yards after its successful application in US and New Zealand yards. The approach sees the processes of consultation, measurement, design, quote, manufacturing and installation bundled together to provide an efficient solution for new build or refit projects. Complementary to DuraShield, is DuraShield Marine E Zone which is a heat-reducing glass designed especially for pilothouses, providing captains with clear windows and optimised thermal performance without the need for dual glazing. Glasshape products provided the impressive glass areas seen on yachts like McMullen & Wing charter yacht Big Fish and Delta mega yacht Invictus and is fully marine certified.

Tru-Design returns for its tenth year at METS, to show its new, non-return valve range and discuss its extended ball valve offering. Showing why it’s the the world leader in approved composite skin fittings, ball valves and associated fittings, Tru-Design composite products eliminate the worry associated with corrosion and electrolysis prevalent with traditional bronze through-hull fittings. The products have the seal of approval by Bureau Veritas, IMCI and ABYC and will last the life time of the vessel.

Pacific Aerials returns to METS with new products, product refinements, and a new cata-logue for 2015. Pacific Aerials’ Pro Series marine antenna range was the first to feature an easy to remove and remount fibreglass antenna without the need to pull or cut the coaxial cable – and though there are now imitations on the market, Pacific Aerials’ constant programme of advancement has seen the Pro Series range maintain its position at the top of the market. Pacific Aerials also offer a custom design and build service for antennas and accessory solutions at short notice and low volumes.

C-Tech have taken carbon fibre technology and made it universal in the sailing world. With a firm focus on performance, the Auckland-based company design and manufacture premium carbon fibre products across a broad range of applications. Their high performance sail battens are much lauded and sought-after, yet C-Tech also put just as much effort into small recreational customers’ requests

Working closely with high performance race teams including America’s Cup and round the world challengers, products are rigorously tested in the most demanding environments. New product developments on show at METS include improvements to the FlexiFurl range of furling composite battens so they can be used in superyacht headsails. These will be on display along with a full range of sail battens and their accessories and C-Tech’s patented inflatable spinnaker retrieval snuffer system. These products will be of interest to superyacht builders, captains and owners looking to improve performance, aesthetics and reliability on their boats. The recent addition of a 15-metre long pressure and temperature controlled autoclave to the C-Tech plant, has allowed much larger projects to be undertaken.

Recent projects have included supplying mainsail and jib battens for all Volvo Ocean Race teams, prepreg carbon winch hooks, battens for the new Tripp 85m ketch 3069 and a large aerospace project.

New Zealand companies will present a united front, supported by the NZ Marine Export Group, as they present their world-leading products and services. Joss Hong, long time proponent of the New Zealand marine industry believes in the importance of New Zealand companies’ close-knit approach.

“New Zealand is renowned for being amongst the best when it comes to innovation in the boating and yachting world. The geographic location and small population size propels our New Zealand export marine companies to work closely together as an industry; and to design and deliver innovative world class products and services.”

“I’m delighted Sealegs International and Glasshape Ltd will be exhibiting at METS for the first time; two New Zealand companies with a strong foundation of innovation and proven international success,” says Hong.

NZ Marine is undergoing a phase of growth in the lobbying activities it’s taking on to sup-port local industry, as well as in the international partnerships it’s forming to assist its members. We’re looking forward to welcoming you to the New Zealand Pavilion for Kiwi innovation in the heart of Amsterdam RAI.

Judges’ Commendation for Dunya motor yacht AXIOMA (ex Red Square) at WSA 2014

May 13, 2014

Written by zuzana

Dunya Yachts is excited to announce that their motor yacht Axioma (ex Red Square) has been honoured with the Judges’ Commendation in the Displacement Motor Yacht (1,300 – 1,999GT) category at the recent World Superyacht Awards 2014. The awards ceremony took place at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam on Saturday, May 3.

The annual event brings together the most celebrated superyacht builders and designers in the world, to recognise outstanding craftsmanship and visionary design.

The first delivery from superyacht builder Dunya Yachts, superyacht Axioma was nominated in the same category as Delta Marine luxury yacht Invictus, Nobiskrug superyacht Odessa II and Feadship mega yacht Sea Owl.

“We are honoured to receive such a prestigious commendation from the World Superyacht Awards judges,” said Sedat Ergün, Director of Dunya Yachts. “The judging panel is comprised of 18 superyacht owners who have a combined ownership experience extending well into triple figures. To be recognised for quality of build and craftsmanship by such experienced owners is testament to the pedigree we are creating at Dunya Yachts. M/Y Axioma stands out from the global fleet for her groundbreaking features, yet has strong universal appeal for her sophisticated and daring design. We are thrilled to have received such an accolade.”

Dunya Yachts is currently underway with its next project, 82m (269ft) mega yacht Warrior 80, which is available for purchase. From the drawing board of Espen Øino, one of the world’s foremost superyacht designers, the 2,000gt project is just 30 months from completion and offers a superb acquisition opportunity for an owner looking to take delivery of a superyacht of such magnitude in less than three years. The hull is 80 per cent complete, and there is still considerable scope for adaptation to the Warrior 80 yacht’s superstructure and interior design.

ABOUT M/Y AXIOMA (EX RED SQUARE)
72.5M (236ft) displacement yacht (Project DY003)
Launched February 2013
Builder: Dunya Yachts
Exterior Styling: Sterling Scott
Interior Design: Alberto Pinto

Luxury yacht Axioma is Dunya Yachts’ daring debut into the world of superyacht construction. In February 2013, the 72.5m displacement yacht was completed on spec by the yard; she was then sold during the Monaco Yacht Show in September of the same year. A truly global collaboration, the vessel has exterior styling from Sterling Scott and interior design from the late Alberto Pinto (Axioma was his final project to be built while alive).

Axioma superyacht features many revolutionary shifts for the general layout of a vessel of this size. These were made possible by the painstaking attention to detail from the yard’s management team and founder Sedat Ergün. Most striking is the main salon’s double-deck gallery, providing a sense of vast space and light usually reserved for large land-based residences.

For practical purposes, Dunya Yachts brought the gym, spa and steam room up from the lower decks to provide a more inviting environment for guests, and moved the movie theatre to the lower deck. All guest suites have been brought up to the main deck, with expansive windows to showcase the stunning views of the water. Axioma yacht sleeps 12 guests in six suites, including a full beam master suite with panoramic views forward, and she has a crew of 20.

When it came to Axioma yacht’s design, the team chose to spotlight bold style as well as practicality, with an overall design brief of “beach house style”. The vessel’s exterior provides guests with a wide choice of both private and convivial spaces across four decks. Two generous pools, expansive lounging space and dining areas aft are complemented by a secluded lounging and dining area on the bridge deck and a private terrace forward of the master cabin. Albert Pinto’s interior makes use of soft neutrals accented with pops of vibrant colour, which complement a range of natural wood tones and textures.

“We worked with some of the most experienced brains and craftsmen in the business to create a world-class vessel that will continue to be a showcase of what the Dunya Yachts brand can achieve. Axioma is the standard-bearer for our pedigree,” says Ergun of the various suppliers and subcontractor who worked to make her such a stunning vessel, which included:

Awlgrip (Netherlands) – Paint System
C-Quip (NZ) – Forward Light Mast
Caterpillar (USA) – Main Engines and Generators
Cramm (Netherlands) – Hydraulic Moving Parts

Although the experts who consulted and worked on Axioma superyacht were an international mixture, the favourable base labour rate in Turkey meant that she was built for approximately 30 per cent less than comparable shipyards elsewhere in Europe, says Ergün.

Superyacht Axioma was sold at the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show and is now available for luxury yacht charter.

Winners of the World Superyacht Awards 2014

May 05, 2014

Written by zuzana

The newly crowned winners of a prominent Neptune trophy were unveiled at the 9th annual World Superyacht Awards on Saturday, May 3, 2014. The host city of Amsterdam, with its rich maritime history, offered a fitting backdrop as a distinguished audience of superyacht owners as well as industry specialists gathered at the Het Scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam’s National Maritime Museum.

Winners of the World Superyacht Awards 2014 celebrate with their Neptune trophies

The ceremony, which celebrates excellence in superyacht build and design, is the most anticipated event in the superyacht calendar. Throughout the evening, international broadcaster, Natasha Kaplinsky, presented a selection of prized awards to the owners of the finest sail and motor yachts delivered in 2013. A total of twenty-seven coveted Neptune trophies and Judges’ Commendation prizes, custom made for the occasion by Baccarat, were presented throughout the ceremony.

Motor Yacht of the Year was awarded to the 99m Madame Gu
The Motor Yacht of the Year Award honours the very best motor yacht delivered to its owners in 2013, chosen from amongst the winners of the motor yacht classes. Whilst size is not a factor in determining the victor of this award, this year the judges did select the largest yacht of those shortlisted. Built by Feadship–de Vries in Makkum, The Netherlands, with both exterior and interior design from Andrew Winch Designs, motor yacht Madame Gu is widely recognised as one of the most exquisite yachts afloat. It was not just appearance that swayed the judges; a superb quality of structural build, the design and installation of the mechanical elements and systems, and the perfection of interior joinery and decoration was absolutely beyond reproach. This resulted in a unanimous decision to name her as the highly deserved Motor Yacht of the Year.

Sailing Yacht of the Year went to 32.64m Inukshuk
After much consideration of the two sailing yacht class winners – sailing yacht Ganesha and superyacht Inukshuk – the judges voted almost unanimously to select Inukshuk, a 32.6-metre sloop built by Baltic Yachts in Finland, as the winner of this prestigious award. Their decision was largely based on recognition that this yacht provides an optimal balance between excellent sailing performance and the high degree of comfort and customisation offered to its owner. Inukshuk’s elegant looks, which feature uncluttered deck spaces derived from the drawing board of German Frers, state-of-the-art sailing systems and the high standards of construction seen both in the structure of the vessel and its interior finish by Adam Lay Studio, were all factored into the decision.

Voyager’s Award

The Voyager’s Award credits superyacht owners who have undertaken a passage of an unusual or exploratory nature. This award, determined by the jury who have all cruised the world extensively, unusually resulted in the secret ballot creating an exact tie. Rather than breaking the deadlock to determine a single winner, the judges decided to award an equal first place to two owners who have both undergone extraordinary voyages – The owners of superyacht Exuma and luxury yacht Zeepaard.

Superyacht Exuma is a 50-metre motor yacht built by Picchiotti/Perini Navi to a design by Philippe Briand of Vitruvius Yachts. At the design stage, Exuma was specifically customised for cruising the more remote areas of the Pacific and her entry, written personally by the owner, catalogues an example of this: An adventurous voyage, made between 2012 and 2013, that started in New Caledonia and Vanuatu and progressed through the Solomon Islands to Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Palau, and Sabah ending in the Philippines. Not only was the account well written and beautifully illustrated, it also displayed an enviable depth of knowledge of, and interaction with the various populations encountered throughout the itinerary. The judges considered it to be an excellent example of a cruise that deserved recognition.

Built by JFA Yachts in France in 2003, superyacht Zeepaard is a 37-metre expedition yacht designed for adventurous voyages. Her circumnavigation between 2009 and 2013, starting and finishing in the Mediterranean, certainly qualified as such, covering a total of 50,000nm and 39 countries. While the totality of the voyage was too long a duration to qualify for the Voyager’s Award, the judges extracted a portion which fell within the two year limit specified within the rules. Even so, this was an epic cruise. As the judges were to see from a small sample of the 40,000 or so images, it was clear that the owner, along with his family and friends, encountered incredible experiences everywhere they went, even in the rather more adventurous ‘pirate zones’, for which they were well prepared. This was a notable voyage of exactly the type for which expedition yachts were designed, and the judges considered it most worthy of a Neptune.

Legacy Award

The Legacy Award was presented to Sir Donald Gosling who, with over 60 years in superyachting – and counting – is the archetypal yacht owner. His love affair with the sea began at a young age and enrolling in the Royal Navy was a logical route for his career to take. In 1953 he acquired his first yacht which was followed by an array of pre-owned and custom yachts throughout the years. In 1993, Sir Donald Gosling’s current yacht, Leander G (named after HMS Leander – Sir Donald’s Royal Navy posting), was launched and she has been a much-loved staple of the superyacht scene ever since, welcoming both charter guests and Royalty on a regular basis.
