Racing at Antigua Sailing Week 2013 to start this Sunday

April 26, 2013

Located at the popular Caribbean yacht charter destination – Antigua, Falmouth Harbour as well as Nelson’s Dockyard are filling up fast with racing yachts from all over the world, coming to participate in the 2013 Antigua Sailing Week. The event’s racing programme will start with the Guadeloupe to Antigua Race this Friday, followed by the Yachting World Round Antigua Race on Saturday. Competing at the 46th Antigua Sailing Week will start on Sunday, April 28.

Current weather forecasts are predicting winds of around 15 knots all week with a significant sea state providing some big waves to surf down in the sunshine. Lighter winds than last week are due to the Azores high being squeezed south by a low-pressure system centred over Iceland. However, the low-pressure system may move during the week and this could bring a change in the weather. Class splits have now been confirmed, here is a run down on some of the runners and riders.

The big race boats will be making a splash at Antigua Sailing Week, however Peter Harrison’s mighty Farr 115 charter yacht Sojana is undergoing repairs but the team will be racing RP78, Whisper for the regatta. Simonas Steponavièius Lithuanian team racing Volvo 60, Ambersail could be in contention but Ambersail will be sure to have a great battle with another Volvo 60, Cuba Libre sailing under the Austrian flag. Christian Potthoff-Sewing’s German Judel & Vrolijk 53 yacht Auliana II is making her Antigua Sailing Week debut.

Hector Velarde’s Peruvian NM92, Locura is one of the largest yachts but by no means the quickest. Jose Arozamena’s American Farr 73 sailing yacht Maximizer will be difficult to catch but former Antigua Sailing Week winner, British CNB 90 charter yacht Bristolian owned by Patrick Wynn with Antiguan expert John Burnie as crew boss, could well be the boat to watch. Venezuelan Oyster 82 superyacht Starry Night of the Caribbean will be impeccably sailed.

This year Antigua Sailing Week features a variety of fast surfing bowsprit boats. Philip Lotz’s American Swan 42 yacht Arethusa is a proven race winner. However Arethusa might struggle to keep up with some of the smaller rocket ships including Ian Hope-Ross’ Melges 32 sailing yacht Kick ‘em Jenny 2 from St. Maarten and the National Sailing Academy’s turboed Cork 1720, Digicel Challenger. RP37 Peake Yacht Services Slippery from Trinidad could also be one to watch. However, Richard Wesslund’s J/120 yacht Florida-based El Ocaso cleaned up at Antigua Sailing Week last time out and will be a favourite for class honours.

Twelve similar performance cruisers are grouped together. Lucy Reynolds’ British First 40 sailing yacht Southern Child has had a great season and should have a close tussle with British sister ship, Lancelot II skippered by Chris Jackson. Five First 40.7s will have their own private sparring match including: Sea Gal, Spirit of Athena, Coyote, Caipirinha and Visiooptik. Also Jonty Layfield’s British J/39 Sleeper may well feature after time correction.

With over a dozen displacement cruisers 51ft or under, you could call the selection the battle of the light heavyweights. Antiguan resident, Carlo Falcone will be racing Caccia alla Volpe but Christian Reynolds’ British Swan 51 yacht Northern Child will be a force upwind in waves. Several other elegant Swans will be trading places on the race track, including Shane & Basil Diethelm’s Australian Swan 48, Sumatra, Valerio Bardi’s well-travelled Italian Swan 46, Milanto and Swan 44, Selene skippered by Adrian Lower, Commodore of the Royal Burnham Yacht Club.

Philippe Falle’s Deep Blue Racing Team on Quokka should feature – the British Grand Soleil 43 is a weapon in light airs. Karl James, head coach of Antigua’s National Sailing Academy has selected Cliff Andrews to join the Quokka crew. Without doubt the favourite in the displacement light heavyweights is Ross Applebey’s British Oyster 48 sailing yacht Scarlet Oyster. Ross will be sailing with the same crew as last year, all from Guernsey in The Channel Islands.

Antigua Sailing Week is a truly international event with yachts coming to Antigua from all over the world and is also an occasion when Caribbean yachts race each other to settle the season’s bragging rights. Thomas Mullen’s USVI J95, Shamrock VII has had an excellent season and is sure to have a great battle with a clutch of Antiguan boats including Stephen Carson’s Dehler 34, Hightide, Geoffrey Pidduck’s converted six metre, Biwi Magic, Tanner and Shari Jones’ J/30 Blue Peter, Sandy Mair’s Beneteau 35, Cricket and Rick Gormley’s Beneteau 38, Elethea.

Thirty-two Bareboats and five Multihulls will be competing at Antigua Sailing Week but the last word must go to Antigua’s sailing icon, Sir Hugh Bailey, who once again will be proudly flying the Antiguan flag spinnaker on CS40, Yougo. Antigua Sailing Week would not be complete without Sir Hugh’s Antiguan flag spinnaker!

Luxury Yacht Charter for Corporate Sailing Events

July 17, 2012

Corporate Sailing Events aboard luxury sailing yachts are an excellent way of entertaining your clients and a a great way for staff team-building. Both, experienced sailors as well as inexperience newcomers, greatly enjoy these unique and fun events. A few days on the water and your staff will feel more driven and valued, with plenty of exciting memories to talk about in the coming days or even years. Your clients will appreciate your time and effort, helping to create a friendlier and trustworthy relationship. There are a number of charter yachts currently available for Corporate Sailing Events in the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, so please contact our team for more information and customised service in order to choose the best sailing yacht to suite your needs as well as your teams.

Mediterranean

Mediterranean

You could choose to rent one sailing yacht and enjoy some leisurely sailing, cruising along the coast of the Mediterranean or the Islands of the Caribbean, observing your staff bonding and growing as a team. For more excitement and adrenaline, you could choose to hire two or more sailing yachts and incorporate a small regatta into your corporate yacht charter. Your staff and clients will have the opportunity to connect and even have quality time to discuss new business opportunities and future projects. To make the event even more fun and memorable we can organise banners, flags, crew clothing, trophies, caps or other memorabilia that will make regatta even more memorable.

Lampedusa in the Mediterranean

Lampedusa in the Mediterranean

The best way to organise these types of events is over at least 4 or 5 days. Organising a dinner party the first night will help your staff and clients to ease into the new experience and get prepared for the upcoming days of fun. Following a delicious and healthy breakfast the next day, your teams will be ready to take on the first day of preparations for the race. Most of our clients are inexperienced sailors, so there is no need to worry about standing out and not being able to participate. Everyone will have a chance to learn and take on these new skills in order to fully enjoy the entire charter experience. Over the next day or two, depending  on you choice, the teams can show of their new skills and engage in the excitement of the races. The racing is often close and very thrilling, but always safe. On the last day of the race the crew can organise a barbecue or a dinner party and a small prize giving ceremony. Your corporate sailing event could conclude with a sumptuous lunch the next day. We believe, however, that in this race everyone comes out as the winner, be it your staff, clients or yourself.

The Leisure Housing business, with its IRM and O’Hara brands, has benefited from the outstanding development of the outdoor accommodation sector, driven by the dynamic performance of its players and the greater appeal of domestic destinations.

November 04, 2010

Sailing yacht Chrisco, the Luca Brenta and Wetzels & Brown Partners designed CNB 100 sailing yacht, was presented two major Awards by the International Superyacht Society on the occasion of its 20th anniversary gala.

Olivier Lafourcade, in charge of the Superyachts programme at CNB, commented: “It is a great honour to receive these Awards, especially when you think that Chrisco and her owner have covered about 18.000 miles in 15 months, which also says a lot about her design and quality of build.”

Founded in 1989, the International Superyacht Society is the sole organization serving and representing the large yacht industry worldwide. An elected Board of Directors guides the Society’s activities, which include the International Superyacht Design Awards program and the International Superyacht Society Leadership Awards.

Luxury CNB sailing yacht SPIIP to charter in Egypt and the Red Sea

March 09, 2010

Sailing yacht SPIIP is a CNB 86, designed by the naval architect Philippe Briand. This luxury super yacht measuring 26,21m (86′) exudes performance, luxury and opulence and will be in Egypt (Hurgadha) from January to April 2010.

The archipelago around the Hurghada area has some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world. This unique charter destination is totally isolated with the exception of a few dive boats and fisherman. Amongst the atolls you have the feeling  of being anchored in the middle of the sea and yet you are totally protected. All though the area is renowned for being windy at times, due to the numerous reefs you are able to sail in sheltered waters.
Please see below for a sample itinerary in this amazing untouched destination.

Day 1 – You are welcomed aboard sailing yacht SPIIP at El Gouna. After a welcome drink,  explore local markets at Hurghada and sample the refreshing sugar cane juice – or explore the El Gouna resort area and treat yourself to a health spa or game of golf in the middle of the desert.

Day 2 – Set sail for Shab el Erg about 2 hours away. Shab el Erg is an atoll with great anchoring inside and crystal clear water. There is an idyllic pinnacle which you can snorkel with lots of lion fish and sometimes dolphins.

Day 3 – Set sail to Bluff point (3 hr sail). This spectacular anchorage has a beautiful  beach and a fantastic wall dive or snorkel, abundant with fish, turtles and a resident napoleon fish.

Day 4 – Shab umm Usk (1 hr sail ) is another atoll that you can enter with a variety of snorkels depending on the wind. It is however best known for its group of resident dolphins that often come for a play. For dinner it is possible to select a fresh fish or lobster from the local fisherman.

Day 5 – For those who like water sports, Endeavour Island is your spot  which is a 1 hr  sail away. This very protected anchorage is great for water sports and some beach combing.

Day 6 and 7 – Depending on the weather it is possible to visit the national park of the Giftun Islands ( 3 hrs ) or Shab Ali (2 hrs ) in the straits of Gubal. If the weather is too windy which happens sometimes we can organise a trip to Luxor to see the Karnak temple and the valley of the Kings and Queens. If you wish to dive some of the numerous wreck dives it is no problem to rendezvous with a dive boat. It is also possible to incorporate the week with a PADI diving course, organised with a Swedish diving company called Colona dive situated at the marina of El Gouna.

The sleek and speedy exterior of the beautiful sailing yacht SPIIP is matched by her sumptuous interior which offers a light and airy design with splashes of bright fresh colour.  Charter sailing yacht SPIIP can accommodate 6 guests in 3 cabins with ensuite bathrooms including a huge master cabin located aft, a double and a convertible cabin that can either have a double bed or two twin bed configuration.

In April the yacht will relocate to the Western Mediterranean. Contact the team at CharterWorld to check availability and location details for the luxury sailing yacht SPIIP.
