New 485-US-Ton Hoist for Front Street Shipyard

February 13, 2013

Front Street Shipyard on the Belfast, Maine, waterfront is proceeding with plans to upgrade its lifting capabilities with a 485-US-ton (440-metric-ton) hoist. Having obtained the final approval to construct new piers, the owners of Front Street Shipyard are investing in a hoist large enough to service a greater contingent of international superyachts.

They are also beginning the local permitting process to expand their facilities with a new building that will be large enough to allow the new lift inside. Front Street Shipyard’s expanded capabilities are expected to grow the international yachting community in Maine.

The new hoist is on order from Cimolai, an advanced metal construction company in Italy. Cimolai’s team will build the hoist’s components in Italy and ship them to Belfast for assembly. Front Street Shipyard’s owners expect the hoist to be fully operational by August 1. The existing 165-ton hoist will remain the workhorse of the yard.

“With these new capabilities, we expect to attract even more diverse yachts to Maine,” said JB Turner, president of Front Street Shipyard. “We also expect be able to generate over 40 new jobs in an expanded facility, so we hope the City of Belfast will continue to work with us in growing our business .”

Front Street Shipyard has begun the permitting process to expand their facility with a new 24,000-sq ft building. Should this new structure receive approval, it will accommodate some of the larger yachts the yard will attract with the new hoist.

Since the company launched in January 2011, Front Street Shipyard has built an expansive waterfront facility. Their projects have included refits on a 106-foot Burger motoryacht, a 90-foot Doggersbank motoryacht, and an 86-foot Swan sailboat.

Currently undergoing refits are a Lyman Morse 90′ motoryacht, a custom 122′ classic, an Ocean 80, a 92′ Palmer Johnson ketch, and an 80′ Burger motoryacht. They also currently service and store 130 boats. The planned expansion will increase that capacity as well.

NorthStar’s yacht tenders available in Australia through Sevaris Marine

February 11, 2013

The European-manufactured range of NorthStar RIBs is available in Australia through Sevaris Marine. The company has entered the Australian marine market with all guns blazing.

Securing a high-profile location at the South of Perth Yacht Club (WA) and aligning with suppliers including Lowrance, BRP and Oceanic Trailers, the first few NorthStar RIBs arrived in the country pre-Christmas and have been turning plenty of heads on Perth waterways over summer.

Sevaris Marine principal Matt Sevior said the European-manufactured range of NorthStar RIBs offered a huge point of difference over other RIBs currently available in Australia.

“The hull design, materials and cutting-edge construction technology aside, NorthStar adheres to strict rating systems for compliance,” Mr Sevior said.

“NorthStar RIBs over six metres meet or exceed CE Category B Offshore… the safety and stability requirements of this are much higher than Category C, which is the common rating of most other RIBs.

“The Category B rating is defined as ‘Designed for offshore voyages where conditions up to and including wind force F8 and significant wave heights up to and including 4m may be experienced’.

“This rating, combined with an experienced team of naval architects, is why NorthStar has been called upon to design and produce hundreds of RIBs for coast guard and military organisations around the world.”

There are eight production series under the NorthStar brand, ranging from the entry-level T Series tenders, to the fully-customisable OP Series, right up to the flagship RS Series ocean-going cabin boats.

“From recreational boating around Rottnest Island in the west through to Sydney Harbour and the Whitsundays on the east coast, as well as meeting the demanding requirements of marine safety organisations, police and the defence force, there’s a model in the NorthStar range to suit everyone,” Mr Sevior said.

“People will be immediately impressed when they see the NorthStar product, as everything about these boats is absolutely first class, and once they get to experience one they will be blown away… the ride is exceptional!”

Along with exclusive rights to the NorthStar brand throughout Australasia, the Sevaris Marine business model includes plans to source other high-quality marine products from around the world.

Oman developing its reputation as ‘Yachting Destination Dream’

February 11, 2013

Oman is sailing closer to its ‘Yachting Destination Dream’. The opening of new marinas, as well as the growing request for larger sized yachts are the evidence of a maturing market.

Oman is taking firm steps towards developing its reputation as a premier leisure cruising destination, says Erwin Bamps, Chief Operating Officer of Gulf Craft.

Gulf Craft, who had a presence at the Mussanah Marina Grand Opening event in Oman through its partners OHI Marine, says the Omani market for luxury superyachts is on the rise.

The brand new Mussanah Marina, located 85km off the coast of Muscat, offers 54 quality berths, dock-side support and first class facilities, including boat cleaning, assistance upon arrival and disembarkment and a fuel dock and adds yet another premier berthing facility to Oman’s steadily increasing inventory.

Gulf Craft currently has more boats in Omani marinas than any other single boat and yacht brand and offers a full local service support team in Oman through its partner OHI Marine. Last year, Gulf Craft delivered the Majesty 121 yacht to Oman – the largest-ever Gulf Craft hull to make its way to the country. The Majesty 121 is berthed at the Shangri-La- managed Barr Al Jissah Marina, one of the capital city’s leading marinas.

With The Wave’s recently completed Al Mouj Marina welcoming its first yachts and boats last year, Oman is taking firm steps towards establishing its reputation as a highly desirable yachting and boating destination.

A 1,200km coastline, several high-profile waterfront real estate developments and luxury hospitality offerings, superb diving, snorkeling and fishing opportunities, a dramatic coastline featuring fjords, pristine bays and coves and a slew of new marinas coming online along the Musandam, Sawadi and Salalah coastlines is pushing Oman’s prominence on the yachting circuit higher. Oman is already a preferred berthing destination for yacht-owners from the UAE and this is expected to increase as more space comes online and facilities improve further in the coming years.

“In the past few years we have witnessed healthy demand from the Omani market and have delivered not only an increasing number of pleasure craft but also yachts which is evidence of a maturing clientele,” says Erwin Bamps. “Our clients for superyachts currently extend across the globe, with a growing and more prominent presence in the European and the Middle East region. Our home market of the Gulf continues to be very strong and is being led by new yachting destinations such as Qatar, UAE and now Oman,” he continued.

“Oman’s increased focus on marina development – with space being added to berth super and megayachts – as well as its investment in maintenance and fuelling facilities and waterfront destination development shows serious intent in positioning leisure cruising as a tourism draw,” added Bamps. “The country is ideally positioned to capitalize on stopover traffic from yachts crossing over from the Mediterranean and the Red Sea onto the Indian Ocean islands and beyond to South East Asia,” he added.

MGMT Yacht focusing on future of London as a Superyacht destination

January 25, 2013

This Sunday will mark six months since the Olympic opening ceremony as well as six months since London has become the superyacht destination of 2012. MGMT Yacht, the superyacht advisory firm and London yacht agent who were responsible for offering technical and administrative expertise to visiting superyachts during the games, is now concentrating on the future of London and its role as a superyacht destination.

Few cities in the world boast the kind of landmarks London has in spades – and with unique access to iconic backdrops, such as Tower Bridge and Europe’s tallest building the Shard a berth on the River Thames undoubtedly offers some of the most impressive city moorings in the world.

There is no reason to be put off by the weather either. It’s officially not raining in London 94 per cent of the time! London has less rain than Rome and more Michelin star restaurants than Paris. London has recently been voted both the business capital of the world and the fashion capital of the world. London has also recently retained its standing as the world’s top financial centre. With so much choice, an endless list of things to do and see, it is no wonder that London should be the new playground for super wealthy yacht owners.

Superyacht owners looking for an alternative destination to the crowded marinas of the Mediterranean are attracted to London with its better mooring rates and access to Northern European shipyards. London offers things that the South of France simply cannot.

Mark Upton, Managing Director of MGMT Yacht said “For the first time this summer, during the Olympics Games, some of the world’s largest superyachts came to London. But it appears that won’t be last time. Superyacht owners are now convinced that London has much more to offer them than the more traditional and predictable yacht destinations – namely Monaco or Cannes.”

Some of the largest superyachts were in London this summer, including mega yacht ‘Octopus’, owned by co-founder of Microsoft, Paul Allen and the 74m motor yacht ‘Ilona’, owned by Frank Lowy, co-founder of Westfield. Moored in Canary Wharf they couldn’t have been closer to the action!

MGMT will be offering numerous services to visiting yachts, such as cruise planning, clearances, visas, bunkering, aviation support, provisioning, ground tours, full concierge service and more to enable superyacht guests and crew to enjoy the best that London and the UK has to offer.
