Italian Sea Group expands with new superyacht refit facility

March 15, 2013

With 400 yacht builds under its lead so far, the Italian Sea Group has recently expanded its operations with a new superyacht refit facility, featuring 100,000 sq meters of production space as well as 250 meter LOA capacity. It is situated in Marina di Carrara, Italy.

The Italian Sea Group’s brand components are very well known: Admiral, Tecnomar and Nuovi Canteieri Apuania make up over 60 years of European tradition. Making its presence established in North America is one of the group’s immediate goals, and with its new delivery of the motor yacht Impero 37, making waves across news wires (and eventually the Atlantic), the company isn’t too far from total accomplishment.

The Impero 37 yacht could be built as a full displacement with up to 4-decks within the 60m configuration.

At their new superyacht refit facility, captain and crews will find 2,000sqm of space in which to relax or get some personal work done. The yard has a 200m dry dock, a floating barge for yachts up to 90m and a number of cranes capable of lifting over 1,000 tons.

To say that the facility can handle almost anything is an understatement. Custom builds that have emerged from the yard thus far are completely different from one another. In addition to the Impero 70 yacht, there is a 40m of the same line being delivered to her owner this summer. The yard is also completing work on a 24m sailing yacht and three other custom yachts in the spring of next year.

Endeavour Quay providing marine businesses with exclusive opportunity

March 14, 2013

Endeavour Quay, the highly equipped professional superyacht repair and refit facility situated on Gosport waterfront, overlooking Portsmouth Harbour, is providing marine businesses with the possibility to operate on the site. From this month, the famous and historic boatyard has further office, storage as well as workshop space available for marine businesses to occupy.

This busy yard regularly plays host to big names in the world of yacht racing including Alex Thomson and Mike Golding, as well as the Clipper fleet and yachts such as the classic J class.

Endeavour Quay also has a strong commercial client base including naval, workboat, and safety vessels; and with more than five marinas and circa 5000 leisure craft in Portsmouth Harbour, it also welcomes a large number of privately owned sail and power boats throughout the year.

The marine trade centre hopes to attract new tenants to further enhance the service offer to boat owners in the region. Already home to many marine businesses including a chandlery, rigger, sail maker, engineer, surveyor and specialist painter, the boatyard provides the perfect base for new and existing businesses to operate.

Endeavour Quay plays an important role in Gosport’s thriving marine services hub; the town is a marine leisure centre with numerous marinas and boatyards located in a busy commercial harbour. There are excellent transport links with Portsmouth Harbour, the train station and ferry terminal are only a short ferry ride away with direct trains to London Waterloo, Gatwick Airport, and the Isle of Wight. Gosport also has major road links and Southampton Airport is less than an hour away.

A member of the British Marine Federation’s Superyacht UK, Endeavour Quay has a strong affiliation with the UK superyacht industry. The large undercover boat sheds, 180 tonne travel hoist, 24 hour deep water access and no air draft restriction mean the yard is the ideal spot for bigger yachts based and visiting the region; vessels in excess of 24 metres often reside on-site for refits and repairs.

With spaces suitable for storage, offices and workshops, all units are fully serviced with power, water, data communication links and lighting.

The original buildings, with their comprehensive transverse rail system, are ideal for major marine refit projects for superyacht, powerboat and commercial craft.

The yard has also built their own dedicated barge to undertake maintenance dredging around the facility, together with a further Tug for boat movements.

Comprehensive engineering and carpentry shops have also been installed to service projects around the yard.

Major investment in the facility, is proof of commitment to the continuing development of Solent Refit as a leading  deep water superyacht facility in the UK.

The yard operates an open policy for all boatbuilders and contractors, offering a cost effective solution to major yacht refit work. The parallel lift is capable of lifting vessels up to 60 metres long and 1500 tons.

Oceania Marine Shipyard working on three superyacht refit projects

March 12, 2013

This year’s superyacht refit season is well underway at Oceania Marine Shipyard in New Zealand, with a line up of three projects one behind the other. These include the refit of the 34m charter yacht ‘Che’. Early on a March Monday morning, sailing catamaran yacht Che was hauled out. By mid morning, she was in position on the wash-down pad astern of a 37 metre Dubois sailing yacht and another large project in Shed C at the head of the slipway.

Oceania Marine Managing Director, Martin Gleeson, comments: “We are one of the few shipyard which can handle a catamaran of ‘Che’s’ dimensions but thanks to the width of the slipway and our flexible cradle system we can accommodate these types of vessel. We have put together 3 separate high quality Superyacht paint teams as well as all the other supporting trades to undertake the workloads that three large simultaneous projects generate. This demonstrates the depth of capacity the shipyard and the Port Whangarei area has.”

“The race is now on to complete these projects in a timely fashion and clear other waiting clients before the South Pacific charter season commences in May. The key to achieving this is good project management and Oceania Marine has great strength in this department,” says Oceania Marine Shipyard Yacht Liaison Jim Loynes.

Feadship welcomes home 71m motor yacht UTOPIA for refit

March 12, 2013

Originally launched in 2004, the impressive 71,60-metre charter yacht Utopia has returned home to Feadship for a range of maintenance activities as well as technical upgrades. This is the second time Feadship has welcomed home motor yacht Utopia for a refit, the first being a successful project in 2007 to personalise this outstanding vessel to its then new owner’s requirements.

“The main reason to come to Feadship for a refit is to retain the essence of how the boat was built and ensure she remains of the highest pedigree possible in the world today,” says Utopia’s captain, Kevin Paul Collins.

The main activities involved in the Utopia yacht project are repainting the hull and superstructure, adding a new coat of underwater antifouling, installation of a new A-Sea shore power convertor, installing a new HMSA sewage treatment plant to meet the latest IMO requirements, and reconditioning the teak decks.

Feadship will also carry out a wide range of minor maintenance jobs on the exterior, interior and machinery systems as superyacht Utopia is brought – quite literally – to better than new status.

“We are both delighted and proud to have Utopia back for the second time since her launch,” says Ico Vergouwe, Refit Manager at Feadship. “This shows how both the owner and crew feel confident that Feadship offers the best service at a reasonable price, making sure that Utopia keeps her high value. It is also pleasing to note that our open approach makes it attractive enough for an owner to bring a yacht back to the Netherlands even when this means adapting his schedule to fit in a tight refit slot.”

Captain Collins, who has been at the helm of mega yacht Utopia since May 2011, agrees. “Although we have covered some 46,000 miles over the past two years, Utopia has been exceptional. She has also been very well maintained and we could easily have waited another year for this refit. However, when he heard that a dock was available in March the owner changed his cruising plans and sent us off on our third Atlantic crossing in seven months. It is definitely worth the effort as the owners get a better product… And it is a great experience for me as skipper to take a signature Feadship like this back to the yard. It gives us all a real sense of pride.”

Oceania Marine attended Antigua Charter Yacht Show 2012

February 26, 2013

Last December saw Oceania Marine’s yacht liaison Jim Loynes participate in the Antigua Charter Yacht Show. Although this was the first time the NZ company has been represented there, it would appear to have been a huge success and Oceania Marine will definitely participate again in the future.

Having been to Antigua many times during his yachting career Jim said: “It was a nice opportunity to catch up with old friends and also make some good new contacts in the industry. It was a very good show and a good chance to introduce myself and Oceania Marine directly to yachts that are heading in our direction over the next year or so. I will be in touch with them again over the coming months and we will be there to assist them during their time in NZ should they be in need of shipyard facilities.”

The show is early in the Caribbean season and is a charter show so several private yachts would not have arrived at the time of the show. Accordingly Jim states: “If any vessels we missed are heading across the Pacific we are always glad to hear from them and to discuss their particular plans and requirements.”

Motor yacht MAVERICK – 30m Superyacht Repaint Project completed by Oceania Marine

February 26, 2013

Originally constructed by leading Dutch builder Kuipers in 2003, the 30m motor yacht Maverick was relaunched in January 2013, following a full exterior repaint at Oceania Marine. Completed in just over 10 weeks, the 30m superyacht Maverick got a new underwater hull, topsides as well as superstructure. All work was performed under cover in Paint Shed C at Oceania Marine shipyard in Port Whangarei, New Zealand.

Managing Director, Martin Gleeson, says: “This is the first full repaint of the 2013 season and it is great to get it done to such a level of excellence and client satisfaction as it sets the standard for the projects that follow. I take ‘my hat off’ to the paint team of Oceania Marine Coatings and the project managers here at the shipyard for the job they have done.”

Jim Loynes, Oceania Marine Yacht Liaison, was involved in the 30m Maverick yacht project from the outset and says: “There is nothing more satisfying than seeing something through to such a great result. The vessel topsides are finished in a very striking Awlgrip ‘Stars and Stripes’ and with her Awlgrip ‘Matterhorn White’ superstructure she is sure to impress wherever she goes.”

While luxury yacht Maverick is not the biggest yacht by modern standards, she is quite a complicated vessel when it comes to repainting and the team did a great job in completing it to a very high standard indeed.

The launch of Maverick yacht was followed immediately by the haul out of a 37m Dubois sloop for a hull repaint in Awlgrip metallic grey, which should also look stunning when the covers come off in early April. As always while this project is going on Oceania Marine has other things running concurrently with one yacht in the shed for some longer term works and various others being hauled for maintenance works, including a very large catamaran due shortly, handling these vessels is one of the company’s specialities as Oceania Marine is one of the few yards in the south Pacific region able to accommodate this type of vessel.
