Auckland On Water Boat Show 2013, September 26 – 29

May 09, 2013

Set to take place from September 26 to 29, this year’s Auckland On Water Boat Show is promising to be another great event with a large percentage of the exhibitors already confirmed by show organisers, NZ Marine Industry Association.

With the show’s timing scheduled to facilitate boating enthusiasts’ preparation for summer boating activities, the Auckland On Water Boat Show is the only boating expo in New Zealand which enables boaties to experience a range of vessels on land and on the water during the event.

The show’s CEO Michelle Khan says the popular and long-running annual event once again returns to the world-class facilities of Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, part of the Wynyard Quarter in downtown Auckland.

“This year we expect around 200 marine-oriented businesses with the latest and best products and services for powerboat users, sailors, fishermen, kayakers, PWC riders, launch owners, and paddle-boarders to make the most of the opportunity to talk to boaties before the new summer season gets into full swing,” says Ms Khan whose team has already secured bookings for more than eighty per cent of the exhibition sites.

Boats of all sizes will be berthed alongside the Viaduct Marina, while around the Viaduct Events Centre a huge range of trailer boats, yachts, personal water craft and more are on display. Inside the centre and three adjoining pavilions, hundreds more marine technology, engine, navigation and safety experts will share their passion and knowledge of all things ‘on water’.

Larger, more varied displays are expected from a number of exhibitors, says Khan. “Numerous new boats are being launched and exhibitors have indicated a range of new products perfect for summer boating are also being released at this year’s show.

Khan says the signs are clear that the 2013 event is set to build on last year’s successes after the 2012 Auckland On Water Boat Show wrapped up with boaties enthusiastically purchasing everything from shackles, lifejackets, electronic equipment and fishing rods to motor yachts worth several million dollars in one of the largest displays of the New Zealand marine industry ever seen.

From 26 to 29 September, the Auckland On Water Boat Show opens at 10 am on all four days, closing at 6 pm Thursday through to Saturday and 5 pm on Sunday, 30 September.

A very successful Palma International Boat Show 2013

May 07, 2013

Having closed its doors on Sunday, May 5, the 30th edition of the Palma International Boat Show hosted an impressive number of around 37,000 visitors. Amongst them was the King’s only son, Crown Prince Felipe, the first time in 30 years that a member of the Spanish royal family has attended.

Palma International Boat Show 2013

A keen sailor, even competing in the 1992 Olympics as part of the Spanish sailing team, Crown Prince Felipe paid a surprise visit to the Show to present the Marcial Sanchez-Barcaiztegui Award, the first of its kind to recognise those who promote sailing. Sanchez-Barcaiztegui was one of the most respected and loved personalities in the sailing world and played a fundamental role in the promotion of the sport throughout Spain.  Having paid tribute, Prince Felipe spent more than an hour walking around the Boat Show, greeting both exhibitors and the public.

Director of the Palma International Boat Show, Chema Sans, was delighted at the event’s success, “This was a completely different Show from 2011. Most notably, it has grown a lot, the number of exhibitors was up 25% and the sea-based exhibition area up 76%, largely due to the crucial addition of a Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show – a venture that makes a good deal of sense for the Balearics.  Last year Monaco reported a record attendance of 33,000, we know for sure that we have beaten this figure and certainly had many more sailing superyachts on display. In total 47 superyachts over 24 metres lined the quayside of Moll Vell marina and, based on this year’s runaway success, I envisage this expanding to 65 or more for 2014.”

Chema continued, “All the exhibitors I have spoken with seemed to be happy having gathered quality contacts and conducted serious business. Those promoting smaller craft may not have sold ten boats at the Show, as could have been the case a decade ago, but have had their expectations exceeded considering the difficult economic environment. Many are already thinking about next year, discussing their stand and berthing requirements. And, with the all-new eight million euro Moll Vell due to be complete and open for business by spring 2014, the Show can only build in importance and quality.”

For the 30th edition, public and private sector worked together to remodel the Show into a nautical week with TapaMar gastronomy, the Gaastra PalmaVela regatta and Maremostra Ocean Film Festival running alongside the more traditional boats, accessories and services. The intention was to promote the Islands, in particular Palma, and confirm their strategic importance in tourism and yachting – giving impetus to the economy and job creation.

Speaking exclusively to nautical channel NTVE.TV, Jose Ramon Bauza, President of the Balearic Islands who declared the Show open on 1 May, said, “It is absolutely necessary for our economy, because now we want to improve our economy, we want to give opportunity for unemployed people and we want to be very proud of our industry in this nautical sector because they say we are the best all over the world.”

Quotes from exhibitors:

Paul Allan, Portbooker: “This is the Show that Palma has been missing.  The Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show in particular has given us a great platform to launch our brand new 40 metre plus website, and we’ve generated keen interest from marina partners and end-users over the past five days. We’re a global business but with strong local representation in the Balearics and we recognise these Islands as the leading nautical destination in the Med.”

Jimmy Blackburn, Fairline South Mallorca: “The weather has been fantastic and Mallorca is a great place for our customers to come and see us – a touch point to build relationships. We’ve gathered good leads, via previously known customers and new business, and it’s brilliant that we’ve been allowed to bring both new and used boats to the Show, priced between 200,000 and 1.4 million pounds.  We will return in 2014.”

Stuart Bray, Bray Marine International: “At long last they’ve got it right. We’ve had a very productive five days, busy with customers.  We will be back next year.”

Jamie Collins, Oyster Yachts: “Compared with 2011, the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show has brought a new dimension to the Palma International Boat Show. Inter-broker cooperation is key to business existence on the Island and it has worked well. Footfall has been impressive, aided I am sure by three non-working days, a bank holiday and the weekend. Our Oyster 100 superyacht Penelope has been received well on her debut and it has been nice to see yachts of a similar size and usability alongside her. A large mix of nationalities from Russian to British, German to Italian, have come on board for a viewing and all been impressed. We’re very pleased and keen to participate again next year.”

Peter Franklin, The Islander magazine and NTVE.TV: “We were thrilled to have been awarded a contract by Show organisers to handle international promotion of the event. To then see it become such a great success has delighted the whole team. Part of our contract was to provide internet-based and local terrestrial TV coverage of the whole Show. To focus our programming we awarded ten ‘Captains Lounge Best in Show’ prizes which included six yachts across the size range – motor and sail – now viewable on our website. We look forward to being involved in an even bigger Palma International Boat Show in 2014.”

Marc Kelly, Palma Refit: “The revamped Show has been well received and feedback positive. Without the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show we would not be here, as superyachts are our main target market, and in my opinion it’s been a long time coming. Not only have we been able to network and generate leads, but we’ve also been able to reinforce our image in the marketplace. We will be back next year.”

Salvador Sancho, Marina Estrella: “With last year’s Show postponed, it gave the event the opportunity to start again with a new format and of course the new agreement with the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show. Overall this has brought more international clients to the Show, many of them serious boat buyers. We have sold our motor yacht Azimut 88 to a Portuguese client who travelled from Vilamoura, our Minorchino 42 to a British client who will berth her in Torrevieja, a Hanse 415 to another British client, an Azimut 55S to its new owner in Cascais and finally a Cobalt 242. Many enquiries also came for the Hanse 630 and 575.  Not bad given we were expecting a quiet Show.  The emphasis was on quality rather than quantity which was a blessing as it allowed our sales team to invest time in their clients and conduct sea trials without being under pressure.  Next year we will certainly return, with at least ten boats, and feel positive that we are with the best yachts and businesses that Palma has to offer.”

Singapore Yacht Show 2013 a Huge Success

May 06, 2013

This year’s Singapore Yacht Show (SYS) has been a great success, being declared as Asia’s most important yachting as well as boating industry event.

Singapore Yacht Show 2013

Singapore Yacht Show 2013

Managing director of organisers Singapore Yacht Events, Andy Treadwell, said the feedback from exhibitors, partners and those who attended the show was incredibly positive, and he was looking forward to an even more spectacular 2014 event. “Everybody who participated is saying that the number and quality of visitors at this year’s show was way beyond their expectations. They all seem to have had significant leads, and significant sales. They all agree that the ONE°15 Marina Club here in Sentosa Cove is the perfect venue for a regional show, and Singapore is the ideal business hub for the future of yachting and boating in Asia,” Mr Treadwell said.

Neil Hornsby, director of Burgess said: “It was incredibly well organised and attracted just the right calibre of clientele, so we were delighted, as indeed were the owners of sailing yacht Twizzle.”

This year’s event attracted more than double the number of last year’s exhibitors, including a significantly wider selection of vessels in the 30ft – 80ft category.

Exhibiting for the first time was Sunseeker Asia, one of the most popular brands worldwide, and represented in Singapore by Daniel Au, who commented: “Sunseeker is absolutely delighted with the outcome of SYS 2013. It is now by far the best show in Asia, with seriously promising results for us – especially in the superyacht range. We are working on several contracts with new clients who we met during the show – and we are confident that most of them will be finalised! The presence of Sunseeker in Singapore is now firmly established, and the success of the Singapore Yacht Show 2013 is a bold testament to the fast developing boating industry in this region.”

Meanwhile Nigel Beatty of Super Yacht Logistics, who attended both the Asia Pacific Superyacht Conference and Yacht Show said: “I was blown away as to how beneficial [the conference] is and I am definitely coming back next year […] the show has been excellent, absolutely excellent. [It] is exceptional… not as big as the Monaco Yacht Show or the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, but it is a high quality show. There is a lot of quality here and that’s what counts.”

The event’s registration provider Go Gorilla recorded over 8,000 visitors to ONE°15 Marina Club over the four days of the show – nearly double last year’s ticketed entries – and a record 11,000 people registered their interest in the show online before and during the event.

Mr Treadwell said he and his team were taking exhibitor feedback on board and were looking forward to increasing, and maximising the on-water display area next year, as per their requests.

SYS 2013 a Huge Success

SYS 2013 a Huge Success

What the industry is saying
Tom Richardson, of Fairline Boats said: “As well as a superb opportunity to display our yachts to hundreds of visitors, we also secured a number of new sales at the show.  The Singapore Yacht Show delivered good footfall and more importantly a large number of quality High Net Worth and Ultra High Net Worth visitors. The event has certainly proved itself to be one of the leading shows across the Asia-Pacific region. We look forward to attending the show again in 2014 and hopefully achieving an even greater success.”

MaryAnne Edwards, CEO of Superyacht Australia thanked managing director of Singapore Yacht Events, Andy Treadwell, for delivering a yachting and boating event “that has all ingredients to be the stand out show for the superyacht sector in the Asian region”.

She said she was impressed by his dedication over the past few years to ensure this event succeeded and grew into an event that would service the needs of the region and be a showcase for how it should be done. “I will certainly be recommending to our superyacht members that they look to participate in the conference and the show next year.”

On the second day of the show, Mark Cavendish, sales director at Heesen Yachts said: “Today I literally just walked on the stand and there was a gentleman from Jakarta who has a 36 metre motor yacht and he was interested in our 40 metre yacht. What more can you ask for.”

“We are very keen to develop the Asian market, because I don’t know how much business there will be in Europe in the next 5 to 10 years,” he added.

Eric Koh of SG Boating added: “Thank you and your tireless crew for putting up a great show and making this a wonderful platform for SG Boating. Great job! Book us for next year!”

Monaco Yacht Show 2013, September 25 to 28

May 06, 2013

The upcoming 23rd edition of the Monaco Yacht Show will once again host the world’s most spectacular yachts, brought together in one place to attract global superyacht enthusiasts. From September 25th to 28th, more than 100 of the world’s most significant luxury yachts will be showcased in Port Hercules, either available for luxury yacht charter or being exhibited to promote a shipyards’ expertise in new builds.

Monaco Yacht Show 2012

Monaco Yacht Show 2012

Following the success of last year’s event where an impressive fleet, with an average length of 46.7 meters were on display and approximately 40 new builds were unveiled to their world premiere, the 2013 MYS superyacht fleet is also set to attract billionaires from the far reaches of the world. The show organisers have already received a considerable number of applications for the restricted number of berths and strongly advise anyone considering showcasing a yacht this year to apply without further delay for the few remaining spaces that have not yet been allocated. The full list of attending vessels will be released in July.

Last show’s edition broke the event’s attendance record with 33,000 participants – CEO’s and managers of the leading yacht companies, yacht owners, wealthy customers and owners representatives converged to meet up to do some serious business – and next September will undoubtedly be the same.

Gaëlle Tallarida, the show’s Managing Director, says: “we deliver a social and business networking platform for the world’s top clientele interested in the niche superyacht market. The Monaco show remains the place to be whether you’re looking to step onboard this year’s finest superyacht offerings or discover the most innovative and tailor-made products and services that make luxury yachting the ultimate art of life.”

From the infinitely large to the infinitely small

As yachts are increasing in length, size should not be the main criterion when purchasing one. The designing and building of a superyacht should be considered to be similar to creating a work of art, from the hull’s exterior structures to the true works of art crafted within each of the tiniest areas onboard. If one already has his very own bespoke dream yacht envisaged then the event encourages to refine one’s ideas by simply visiting the floating exhibits moored and awaiting his presence along the MYS docks.

Visitors can then enter the show’s Designer Gallery by the MYS boat shuttles and meet the many top yacht designers who will without doubt be able to turn one’s dream into a reality. From a blank canvas their imagination will run wild in front of visitors with the absolute freedom to create the ultimate personal reflection of their tastes. One can then, complete his shopping list inside the exhibition tents where, in an air conditioned ambience he will find a wide range of high technology and crafted products put on display by the world’s best nautical suppliers.

Made for the elite

Since the 2012 event the Organisers have been tirelessly seeking to further upgrade the show’s amenities so as to deliver once more a superbly run and unique event in keeping with the shows opulent clientele. The shows organisers once again promise to deliver a world-class event to a world class audience in partnership with prestigious high quality world class brands.

Successfully launched in 2012, the 650-sqm Upper Deck Lounge will again host VIP clientele who can sit again in comfort to discuss business with the heads of the best companies that the superyacht arena has to offer. Here visitors will find the official restaurant, champagne bar and private areas for business meetings. The area will also host an exhibition of the finest of luxury watches by Ulysse Nardin who will be celebrating their fifth consecutive year as Official Sponsor to the show.

Only Watch, September 28, 2013

Besides its continuing financial support for Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies (AMM), a locally based charity, the Show team will co-organise the 5th edition of the world renowned Only Watch auction that benefits the same charity. Around 40 unique one off watches especially made by the leading luxury watch manufacturers will be auctioned on September 28th at the hotel Hermitage, Monaco.

In addition to hundreds of new and used boats and specialist marine products on display, there were plenty of activities for visitors during the two-day event. These included rowing tug of war and water polo from the Hamble Sea Scouts – which all attracted lots of spectators. Visitors also enjoyed a fly by from the Solent Coastguard helicopter, as well as visits from the RNLI Calshot lifeboat and the Hamble Fire Engine.

Marco Marine used the event to mark the UK premiere of the new Dufour 500 Grand Large, and Nicolle Associates and Key Yachting also held their official office launch events at the show. Key Yachting held a champagne reception and had a number of new and used boats on display, including two beautiful Princess yachts and a J111 racing yacht, which all attracted a lot of interest.

Gemma Dunn, Marketing Coordinator at Key Yachting, said: “We had a great show and were really pleased with the level and quality of customers at the event. We held our official launch party on the Saturday, with Carol Taylor of National Boat Shows opening our new premises, and are really looking forward to the season at Hamble Point Marina and getting involved in next year’s event.”

Andy Cunningham from Michael Schmidt and Partners, commented: “We had a brilliant show and were pleased with the quality of the visitors and the level of enquiries at the show. We took three offers on boats over the weekend and prepared two contracts on Monday morning after the show had ended. It’s fantastic to do business from a weekend event and we are delighted with the response and results. It was also great to see so many of the local community getting involved in the event including the young sea scouts – who we welcomed on board our yachts. You can do everything at Hamble Point Marina and events like this are a great way to bring the business and local community together, and we are looking forward to next year.”

Leading brands at the show included Dehler, Hanse, Nordhavn Yachts, Azimut and Beneteau, with visitors enjoying accompanied viewings, sea trials and workshops.

Those who attended the show also had the chance to visit the BMF On the Water bus, which was on site to promote getting people into boating and treated visitors to free giveaways.

Nicholas Parton, General Manager at Hamble Point Marina, said: “We had a fantastic event and are delighted to have welcomed so many visitors, despite the on and off weather. We had visitors travelling from far and wide and have received some brilliant feedback from visitors, exhibitors and tenants, and have already started planning next year’s event.”

Auckland’s premier superyacht marina SILO MARINA increases capacity

May 03, 2013

Located on Auckland‘s waterfront, the largest city of the beautiful yacht charter destination New Zealand, SILO MARINA has doubled its capacity. The marina is now able to accommodate yachts and it is easier to install masts as they approach the next season.

Silo Marina is located in the heart of Auckland’s inner city waterfront, on Jellicoe Street and is adjacent to the larger Westhaven marina. Easily identifiable by the 37 metre high concrete silos that overlook the berths the marina was first constructed in 2010 as part of a revitalisation of the Wynyard Quarter area.

Over the last month construction works has seen a new 90 metre dock added with a one metre freeboard making it the biggest pontoon in New Zealand.

Adjacent to the new pontoon significant dredging has been carried out to provide ease of access to the dock and to open up access to a 64 metre berth adjacent to the new premises of Southern Spars subsidiary, Rig Pro.

Silo Marina Manager Luke Wigglesworth says an exciting feature of the new development is the improved ability to carry out mast stepping.

“To date, masts have had to be installed beside nearby wharves with the added risk of damaging vessels due to movements from tidal flows and sea conditions. With the improvements to our new Silo Marina service berth we’ve taken a good deal of the hassle out of the process.”

“The berth was given its first test run this week with the launch of the new Alloy Yachts vessel the 43.9m Dubois designed sloop ‘Encore’, with the mast stepping going off without a hitch.”

In addition to the development on the southern end of the marina, a new extension is about to be added to the existing docks on the northern end to create two new 65 metre berths.

With the new developments Silo Marina will move from 535 linear metres to 874 linear metres of available space, doubling capacity and creating 10 berths in total to make boat movements easier.

Waterfront Auckland is the council organisation that owns and operates Silo Marina. It’s General Manager Marinas, Tom Warren says the additional infrastructure is crucial to ensuring Auckland continues to have the facilities to allow the boat building and servicing firms to get on and do their job.

“Superyacht fit outs and servicing is a big part of New Zealand’s marine industry as vessels come here to be fitted out with top of the line equipment from the likes of such companies as Southern Spars. With these new works we can do all we can to facilitate growth in this market for the benefit of both the suppliers and boat owners themselves.”

After a quieter than usual summer season, Silo Marina already has three bookings confirmed for September with two booked for the winter.

Successful 2013 VLC Boat Show

April 29, 2013

The 2013 VLC Boat Show, held in the popular Mediterranean superyacht charter destination Valencia in Spain, ended on Monday 22nd April having received more than 35,000 visitors over the five days. The highest attendance was registered during the weekend, accompanied by good weather. Saturday noted nearly 13,000 visitors and Sunday was marked by an outstanding attendance of more than 17,000 people.

Valencia Boat Show 2013

Valencia Boat Show 2013

VLC BOAT SHOW has taken place at Marina Real Juan Carlos I, the Valencian threefold marina complex that staged the 32nd and 33rd editions of the America’s Cup between 2003 and 2010. Since then, the Marina caters for smaller craft up to superyachts and serves as host to world class sports events.

With a final toll of 60 exhibitors and close to 100 boats on the water, the show has exceeded the targets initially set by the organisers in order to stage this first edition; likewise, the size and diversity of the fair went beyond the expectations of most visitors.

VLC Boat Show 2013

Exhibitors included boat builders and distributors, equipment manufacturers and distributors, yacht charter and boating holiday agencies, marinas, marine associations and government bodies for tourism and the environment. Exhibits covered a wide product and service range, from water toys and dinghies to motor and sail yachts, from high tech rigging and sails to water makers and cutting edge marine electronics.

The City of Arts and Science, Valencia’s modern museum and leisure flagship complex, staged a range of workshops and play areas for children. A replica of 16th century Nao Victoria, first to complete a circumnavigation, and a training ship and two rescue boats, all of them open to visitors, have also featured at the event.

VLC BOAT SHOW has also served as a gathering point for many marine leisure stakeholders. Sailing schools, yacht clubs, equipment distributors and marine life research teams have taken the opportunity at the show to hold a diversity of conferences.

The large dimensions of the marina and good weather have proved an ideal scenario for visitors to enjoy all kind of on-water demonstrations, boat tests and a rescue exercise that involved a life boat and helicopter. The exercise coincided with the departure of a marine life research team boat on a mission to release recovered turtles at sea, followed by a larger vessel packed with children and other spectators.

Just a few days after the show, it has been made public that the waterfront area and Marina Real will now fall exclusively under the responsibility of Valencia city council. VLC BOAT SHOW 2013 has been organised by the Valencian marine trade association with the support of the city council and Marina Real itself. All three parties have now scheduled a list of meetings in order to secure and plan for the 2014 edition.
