The founding of the show

Founder and CEO of the Singapore Yacht Show, Andy Treadwell has been around boats for most of his life, however, it was only 10 years ago that it took on a business aspect when he became part-owner and organiser of the Superyacht Cup 2007, one of the world’s largest superyacht sailing regattas.

After Informa Plc. (the London-based publishing & events company) bought the Superyacht Cup from Andy Treadwell and his partners, he became the CEO of its Sports & Leisure Group which counted the Informa Yachts Group and the Monaco Yacht Show among its prestigious events.

In 2011 Andy and his team at IYG founded the Singapore Yacht Show as a sister event to the Monaco Yacht Show, as the Asian region was showing untapped potential as a market. Since buying the business back from Informa in 2012, he has been permanently based in Singapore, immersed in the Asian yachting market and its trends.

The inaugural edition of the Singapore Yacht Show took place in 2011 and consisted of only 12 yachts, half a tent and approximately 3,000 visitors, however, the quality of the information and prestigious names on show ensured its success to become an established event.

The mission of SYS

The mission of the Singapore Yacht Show is to attract the global superyacht fleet to Thailand and Southeast Asia to make it the preferred winter destination for superyachts, and to act as an important market for buying and selling vessels. The show is also an entry point for wealthy people of all ages looking to learn more about the luxury lifestyle, with the goal of chartering or even owning a vessel.

Why Singapore?

Following the Global Financial Crisis in 2008, the main markets and charter grounds for the yachting industry – the US and Europe – were experiencing stagnation at the time, and the Asian region was a virtually untapped market. Even today, there are very few luxury yachts in Asia in comparison with the wealth of the region and the desire for luxury goods.

Singapore has three-to-four world-class marinas which offer first-class services in a luxury setting. Luxury yacht Owners and captains can use the hub as a place to restock supplies, refuel, complete maintenance or even buy and sell superyachts.

Singapore is one of the greatest business and financial hubs in the Far East and its location off the south of Malaysia, close to the Indonesian archipelago farther south and Thailand and Myanmar to the north places it central to some of the best and most popular luxury yacht charter grounds the region has to offer. Thailand, in particular, has been significantly developing its marinas and service for the luxury yachting industry in recent years, encouraging more luxury yacht charter by Asian-based Owners as well as visitors from as far afield as Europe. The region is an excellent alternative to the Caribbean & Bahamas as a winter vacation ground, and there is an abundance of dive sites unlike anywhere else on Earth for their biodiversity.

In 2016 the Thailand Yacht Show was launched in partnership with the Thai government, and this has synergised perfectly with the Singapore Yacht Show as the former is a hub for leisure and the latter a financial hub, drawing business connections from countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia, China and Japan.
