Why not begin your yacht charter holiday to the Bay Islands of Honduras? Roatan, Utila and Guanaja located just off Honduras northern coast, are at the southern end of the Mesoamerican Reef System in the Caribbean Sea. There are more than 170 dive sites here teeming with rays, turtles, fish and even whale sharks. It’s the perfect spot for avid divers and nature lovers.

The beautiful cruising grounds of Honduras and Belize Waters as well as the charming island of Roatan, are idyllic. With the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south, Honduras is well placed for superyacht charterers. The Bay Islands provide perfect cruising grounds while La Ceiba on the mainland is the main port.

The country’s two new marinas La Ceiba and Lagoon Marina are great places to drop anchor while you visit some of the many attractions such as the Copan Maya ruins. Copan, the ancient Mayan ceremonial site is located in a tropical rainforest near Guatemala and always worth a visit. It’s a very popular tourist attraction and takes a few days to see the whole site. There are tunnels under the ruins, not for the faint-hearted.

Sail to Utila which is the smallest of the Bay Islands or have a meal beside Lago de Yojoa, Honduras’ largest lake. For beach lovers, Parque Nacional Jeannette Kawas offers white sandy beaches, great snorkelling in the coral reefs and in the nearby forest there are howler monkeys. If you want to do a little shopping Mercado Guamilito can be found in San Pedro Sula. This enormous traditional market is where you’ll find handicrafts and some of the best places to eat.

For those visitors who want to get the adrenalin flowing, ride a zip line. You can zip through fantastic forests way up high in one of the highest canopies in the country, Gracias. For something a little more down to earth, take a trip to the Roatan Butterfly Garden. There are over 30 different species of butterflies and moths along with a huge collection of birds, tropical plants and orchids. The Lancetilla Botanical Garden is a huge tropical garden which can be explored at your leisure.

Alternatively, to get away from the crowds, cruise to Cayos Cochinos, a great place to enjoy spectacular views, fish, snorkel or dive. Fancy seeing pumas, giant anteaters, sloths or jaguars? A day at the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve will give you the opportunity to see one of these amazing creatures. Visiting Honduras wouldn’t be complete without enjoying a carnival. The Carnaval de La Ceiba is held in May when the streets are transformed into a most enjoyable place. After so much activity and lots of fun, return to your superyacht for the next part of your vacation.
