May 15, 2014

Saturday, May 3, 2014, in Amsterdam’s historic Maritime Museum, saw the international Superyacht community gather to unveil the winners of the annual World Superyacht Awards and present them with their Neptune trophies, representing the ‘Oscars’ of the Superyacht industry. Specialist London-based design firm, Andrew Winch Designs, was the evening’s big winner, receiving four Neptunes for its designs for mega yacht Madame Gu (Category winner and Motor Yacht of the Year winner), motor yacht Sea Owl (category winner), as well as sailing yacht Inoui (judges’ commendation).

For winning yachts “Sea Owl” and “Madame Gu”, the Andrew Winch Designs team were able to call on their 30 years of specialist experience to design both the Exterior and Interior of these stunning, but very different superyachts. From initial profile concepts and general arrangements through to final furniture and fabric selections, every element of these magnificent projects was meticulously planned by the 50-strong AWD Design team. An holistic approach that ensured design fluency and consistency for the Clients.

The World Superyacht Awards honours only the very finest new superyachts to have been delivered to their owners in the past year and this year saw a record number of entries. Judged by an independent panel of judges made up of superyacht owners and industry experts, the Andrew Winch Designs team fought off fierce competition in each of their yacht’s categories to take home a ‘Special Judges Award’ for the 33m sailing yacht ‘Inoui’, ‘Displacement Motor Yacht of 1,300GT to 1,999 GT’ for the 62m motor yacht ‘Sea Owl’ and ‘Displacement Motor Yacht of 2,000GT and above’ for the 99m motor yacht ‘Madame Gu’. “Madame Gu” was also the judges’ unanimous winner of the most coveted overall “Motor Yacht of the Year” award, recognising its iconic exterior design and the perfection of its interior layout and decoration.

“We are very honoured to have won awards for both Motor Yachts and Sailing Yachts,” said Andrew Winch, founder and Creative Director of the leading design studio, “each award is a testament to the extraordinary creativity and hard work that everyone at the AWD Studios puts in to designing these exquisite Projects. ‘Madame Gu’, ‘Sea Owl’ and ‘Inoui’ reflect the spirit and vision of their Owners, the adaptability of Andrew Winch Designs and the engineering and build skill of their respective shipyards. Truly a team effort!”

Judges’ Commendation for Dunya motor yacht AXIOMA (ex Red Square) at WSA 2014

May 13, 2014

Dunya Yachts is excited to announce that their motor yacht Axioma (ex Red Square) has been honoured with the Judges’ Commendation in the Displacement Motor Yacht (1,300 – 1,999GT) category at the recent World Superyacht Awards 2014. The awards ceremony took place at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam on Saturday, May 3.

The annual event brings together the most celebrated superyacht builders and designers in the world, to recognise outstanding craftsmanship and visionary design.

The first delivery from superyacht builder Dunya Yachts, superyacht Axioma was nominated in the same category as Delta Marine luxury yacht Invictus, Nobiskrug superyacht Odessa II and Feadship mega yacht Sea Owl.

“We are honoured to receive such a prestigious commendation from the World Superyacht Awards judges,” said Sedat Ergün, Director of Dunya Yachts. “The judging panel is comprised of 18 superyacht owners who have a combined ownership experience extending well into triple figures. To be recognised for quality of build and craftsmanship by such experienced owners is testament to the pedigree we are creating at Dunya Yachts. M/Y Axioma stands out from the global fleet for her groundbreaking features, yet has strong universal appeal for her sophisticated and daring design. We are thrilled to have received such an accolade.”

Dunya Yachts is currently underway with its next project, 82m (269ft) mega yacht Warrior 80, which is available for purchase. From the drawing board of Espen Øino, one of the world’s foremost superyacht designers, the 2,000gt project is just 30 months from completion and offers a superb acquisition opportunity for an owner looking to take delivery of a superyacht of such magnitude in less than three years. The hull is 80 per cent complete, and there is still considerable scope for adaptation to the Warrior 80 yacht’s superstructure and interior design.

ABOUT M/Y AXIOMA (EX RED SQUARE)
72.5M (236ft) displacement yacht (Project DY003)
Launched February 2013
Builder: Dunya Yachts
Exterior Styling: Sterling Scott
Interior Design: Alberto Pinto

Luxury yacht Axioma is Dunya Yachts’ daring debut into the world of superyacht construction. In February 2013, the 72.5m displacement yacht was completed on spec by the yard; she was then sold during the Monaco Yacht Show in September of the same year. A truly global collaboration, the vessel has exterior styling from Sterling Scott and interior design from the late Alberto Pinto (Axioma was his final project to be built while alive).

Axioma superyacht features many revolutionary shifts for the general layout of a vessel of this size. These were made possible by the painstaking attention to detail from the yard’s management team and founder Sedat Ergün. Most striking is the main salon’s double-deck gallery, providing a sense of vast space and light usually reserved for large land-based residences.

For practical purposes, Dunya Yachts brought the gym, spa and steam room up from the lower decks to provide a more inviting environment for guests, and moved the movie theatre to the lower deck. All guest suites have been brought up to the main deck, with expansive windows to showcase the stunning views of the water. Axioma yacht sleeps 12 guests in six suites, including a full beam master suite with panoramic views forward, and she has a crew of 20.

When it came to Axioma yacht’s design, the team chose to spotlight bold style as well as practicality, with an overall design brief of “beach house style”. The vessel’s exterior provides guests with a wide choice of both private and convivial spaces across four decks. Two generous pools, expansive lounging space and dining areas aft are complemented by a secluded lounging and dining area on the bridge deck and a private terrace forward of the master cabin. Albert Pinto’s interior makes use of soft neutrals accented with pops of vibrant colour, which complement a range of natural wood tones and textures.

“We worked with some of the most experienced brains and craftsmen in the business to create a world-class vessel that will continue to be a showcase of what the Dunya Yachts brand can achieve. Axioma is the standard-bearer for our pedigree,” says Ergun of the various suppliers and subcontractor who worked to make her such a stunning vessel, which included:

Awlgrip (Netherlands) – Paint System
C-Quip (NZ) – Forward Light Mast
Caterpillar (USA) – Main Engines and Generators
Cramm (Netherlands) – Hydraulic Moving Parts
Freeman Marine (USA) – Exterior Doors
Heinen & Hopman (Netherlands) – Air Conditioning
Hi-Fog (Finland) – Water Mist System
Lift Emotion (Netherlands) – Elevator
LIST (Austria) – Interior Joinery
Multiplex (Germany) – Sun Awnings
Otto – Piening (Germany) – Propellers
Pacific Coast Marine (USA) – Exterior Doors
Quantum (USA) – Stabilizers
Raytheon (USA) – Navigation Equipment
Roland (Germany) – Main Galley Van Cappellen
Consultancy (Netherlands) – Noise & Vibration Control

Although the experts who consulted and worked on Axioma superyacht were an international mixture, the favourable base labour rate in Turkey meant that she was built for approximately 30 per cent less than comparable shipyards elsewhere in Europe, says Ergün.

Superyacht Axioma was sold at the 2013 Monaco Yacht Show and is now available for luxury yacht charter.

Three Neptune Trophies for Feadship at World Superyacht Awards 2014

May 05, 2014

Feadship is thrilled to announce that it has been honoured with no less than three Neptune trophies at the prominent World Superyacht Awards gala evening, which took place in Amsterdam on May 3, 2014. The majestic 99-metre Feadship mega yacht Madame GU received the award for best ‘Displacement Motor Yacht of 2,000GT and above’, while the outstanding 62-metre Feadship motor yacht Sea Owl won the Neptune for best ‘Displacement Motor Yacht of 1,300GT to 1,999GT’. To cap off an amazing evening for Feadship, Madame GU was honoured with the most coveted prize of all: ‘Superyacht of the Year 2014’.

The World Superyacht Awards already had a special allure for Feadship and the other leading Dutch yards, as this was the first time that the annual ceremony was held in the Netherlands. The recently renovated National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam (where Sea Owl’s owners held their launch party last year) made a phenomenal backdrop to the ‘Oscars of the superyacht world’, and the three awards were a triumph for Feadship and the pioneering owners with whom it created these entirely custom motoryachts.

Big is beautiful
With an interior and exterior designed by Andrew Winch, superyacht Madame GU is the largest yacht built in the Netherlands to date. Despite her length of 99 metres, she can reach 25 knots thanks to her quadruple 3,600kW MTU engines. Among the many features that earned her the Superyacht of the Year award were a fully enclosed helicopter hangar (first pioneered on the Feadship motor yacht Ecstasea), fibreglass domes for the satcom/navigation gear, and an exceptionally elaborate interior.

“It was a privilege to work with such a groundbreaking owner on Madame GU and to enjoy a delightful cooperation with Andrew Winch,” comments Feadship director Henk de Vries. “The client pushed us to our limits by demanding the most complicated interior ever on the largest Feadship ever. Onboard Madame GU we created things that resemble the Palace of Versailles, except the technology we applied and the finesse and craftsmanship were unavailable at the time that chateau was created.”

Extraordinary detail
The equally sophisticated Feadship superyacht Sea Owl was built for experienced owners who are exceptionally private. Her distinctive jade mist green and oyster white exterior contains an interior (also designed by Andrew Winch) with an extraordinarily detailed selection of hand carved pieces, sculptures, petrified wood items and marbles. One of the countless highlights is a sensational stairwell carving of the tree of life: From the depiction of the canopy on the sun deck to the ‘roots’ in the floor of the guest suites in the lower deck aft, the tree takes up the entire wall.

“Sea Owl is the most refined boat built by the industry to date,” says Feadship director Dick van Lent. “From the interior to the exterior, from the tenders to the onboard systems, from the wood carvings to the murals, she is a truly extraordinary bespoke achievement. It was a magical adventure to work with the owners of Sea Owl on a family-oriented superyacht that captures the essence of the highly individual Feadship building experience.”

Winners of the World Superyacht Awards 2014

May 05, 2014

The newly crowned winners of a prominent Neptune trophy were unveiled at the 9th annual World Superyacht Awards on Saturday, May 3, 2014. The host city of Amsterdam, with its rich maritime history, offered a fitting backdrop as a distinguished audience of superyacht owners as well as industry specialists gathered at the Het Scheepvaartmuseum, Amsterdam’s National Maritime Museum.

The ceremony, which celebrates excellence in superyacht build and design, is the most anticipated event in the superyacht calendar. Throughout the evening, international broadcaster, Natasha Kaplinsky, presented a selection of prized awards to the owners of the finest sail and motor yachts delivered in 2013. A total of twenty-seven coveted Neptune trophies and Judges’ Commendation prizes, custom made for the occasion by Baccarat, were presented throughout the ceremony.

Motor Yacht of the Year was awarded to the 99m Madame Gu
The Motor Yacht of the Year Award honours the very best motor yacht delivered to its owners in 2013, chosen from amongst the winners of the motor yacht classes. Whilst size is not a factor in determining the victor of this award, this year the judges did select the largest yacht of those shortlisted. Built by Feadship–de Vries in Makkum, The Netherlands, with both exterior and interior design from Andrew Winch Designs, motor yacht Madame Gu is widely recognised as one of the most exquisite yachts afloat. It was not just appearance that swayed the judges; a superb quality of structural build, the design and installation of the mechanical elements and systems, and the perfection of interior joinery and decoration was absolutely beyond reproach. This resulted in a unanimous decision to name her as the highly deserved Motor Yacht of the Year.

Sailing Yacht of the Year went to 32.64m Inukshuk
After much consideration of the two sailing yacht class winners – sailing yacht Ganesha and superyacht Inukshuk – the judges voted almost unanimously to select Inukshuk, a 32.6-metre sloop built by Baltic Yachts in Finland, as the winner of this prestigious award. Their decision was largely based on recognition that this yacht provides an optimal balance between excellent sailing performance and the high degree of comfort and customisation offered to its owner. Inukshuk’s elegant looks, which feature uncluttered deck spaces derived from the drawing board of German Frers, state-of-the-art sailing systems and the high standards of construction seen both in the structure of the vessel and its interior finish by Adam Lay Studio, were all factored into the decision.

Voyager’s Award

The Voyager’s Award credits superyacht owners who have undertaken a passage of an unusual or exploratory nature. This award, determined by the jury who have all cruised the world extensively, unusually resulted in the secret ballot creating an exact tie. Rather than breaking the deadlock to determine a single winner, the judges decided to award an equal first place to two owners who have both undergone extraordinary voyages – The owners of superyacht Exuma and luxury yacht Zeepaard.

Superyacht Exuma is a 50-metre motor yacht built by Picchiotti/Perini Navi to a design by Philippe Briand of Vitruvius Yachts. At the design stage, Exuma was specifically customised for cruising the more remote areas of the Pacific and her entry, written personally by the owner, catalogues an example of this: An adventurous voyage, made between 2012 and 2013, that started in New Caledonia and Vanuatu and progressed through the Solomon Islands to Papua New Guinea, Micronesia, Palau, and Sabah ending in the Philippines. Not only was the account well written and beautifully illustrated, it also displayed an enviable depth of knowledge of, and interaction with the various populations encountered throughout the itinerary. The judges considered it to be an excellent example of a cruise that deserved recognition.

Built by JFA Yachts in France in 2003, superyacht Zeepaard is a 37-metre expedition yacht designed for adventurous voyages. Her circumnavigation between 2009 and 2013, starting and finishing in the Mediterranean, certainly qualified as such, covering a total of 50,000nm and 39 countries. While the totality of the voyage was too long a duration to qualify for the Voyager’s Award, the judges extracted a portion which fell within the two year limit specified within the rules. Even so, this was an epic cruise. As the judges were to see from a small sample of the 40,000 or so images, it was clear that the owner, along with his family and friends, encountered incredible experiences everywhere they went, even in the rather more adventurous ‘pirate zones’, for which they were well prepared. This was a notable voyage of exactly the type for which expedition yachts were designed, and the judges considered it most worthy of a Neptune.

Legacy Award

The Legacy Award was presented to Sir Donald Gosling who, with over 60 years in superyachting – and counting – is the archetypal yacht owner. His love affair with the sea began at a young age and enrolling in the Royal Navy was a logical route for his career to take. In 1953 he acquired his first yacht which was followed by an array of pre-owned and custom yachts throughout the years. In 1993, Sir Donald Gosling’s current yacht, Leander G (named after HMS Leander – Sir Donald’s Royal Navy posting), was launched and she has been a much-loved staple of the superyacht scene ever since, welcoming both charter guests and Royalty on a regular basis.

Nominees for 2014 Asia Boating Awards

May 01, 2014

The complete list of nominees for this year’s Asia Boating Awards has now been released, with some new and exciting entries, as well as some industry stalwarts. Asian yacht builders have been growing in global market share and are now starting to get worldwide media recognition. Representing Asia’s eagerly awaited event in the yachting industry, the 10th annual Asia Boating Awards will be held at Hotel ICON in Hong Kong on May 9, the same day that the Hong Kong Gold Coast Boat Show opens at the Hong Kong Gold Coast Yacht and Country Club.

Aba-20141

In recognising the China market and environmental issues, the awards this year feature three new categories: Best China Yacht Club / Marina of the Year, Best Brand Presence in China and Green Maritime Company of the Year.

This year sees awards in 21 categories, showcasing Asian builders and international brands, as well as Asian regattas, marinas and yacht designers working in Asia. The pioneering Asia Boating Awards is the first event to recognise the efforts and successes of Asian yacht builders.

The list of nominees comes from online polling of Asia-Pacific Boating readers, with final winners being determined by a panel of judges selected for their expertise as well as their ability to make informed, impartial decisions.

Parmigiani, K. Wah International Holdings, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Jebsen Fine Wines, Grey Goose, Dornbracht and Embraer are the sponsors this year, along with Baccarat, which is providing the trophies.

This year, Asia Pacific Boating is inviting readers, yachting enthusiasts, yacht owners, yacht builders, marina operators, regatta organisers, yacht charter companies, brokers, and designers to submit their choices in each of the categories online. You may nominate in as many or as few categories as you wish. Or even just one. The top five nominees in each category, based on a plurality of nominations, will be sent to a panel of judges for their final consideration.

Nominations of Asia Boating Awards 2014 are now closed.

Top honours for Andrew Winch Designs at 2014 ShowBoats Design Awards

March 13, 2014

Strengthening UK’s global reputation for Design innovation, London-based design firm Andrew Winch Designs was proud to receive three awards for its latest motoryacht deliveries at the last month’s ShowBoats Design Awards. AWD has been honoured with the coveted Neptune Awards for the Exterior Design of the 99m mega yacht Madame Gu as well as for the tenders for Madame Gu and the 62m superyacht Sea Owl.

On the 24th February 2014, at the exclusive Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, Austria the ShowBoats Design Award took place. Celebrating excellence in yacht design and honouring the industry’s creative talents, the annual event attracted an international audience of superyacht owners as well as the leading lights of the international yacht design industry.

The ShowBoats Design Award focuses on the fundamental design aspects of superyacht design such as exterior design styling and interior layout. Judged by a respected panel of yacht owners and independent experts, the winning superyachts are selected following a meticulous study of their design.

In the fiercely contested Exterior Design category, Olympic champion Shirley Robertson O.B.E. who hosted the event, pointed out that all but two members of the elite judging panel awarded had awarded the 99m motor yacht Madame Gu full marks!

“We are thrilled to have won these three prestigious awards,” said Andrew Winch, “as each award recognises the talent, creativity and skill of our dedicated Yacht design team. Whether we are designing a large superyacht or a compact tender vessel, our design team approaches each project with the same dedication, attention to detail and commitment. We are immensely proud of each and every one of our yachts’ quality and individuality, and it is humbling to see our design skills recognised by our peers.”

Unforgettable ShowBoats Design Awards 2014 Ceremony at Swarowski Crystal Worlds in Austria

February 27, 2014

The winners of this year’s prestigious ShowBoats Design Awards were unveiled in the fabulous surrounds of Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens, Austria yesterday evening. Eighteen coveted golden Neptune trophies were presented in front of a sell-out audience of superyacht owners, designers, as well as icons of industry from all over the world.

The evening’s big winners included Palumbo and the creative team behind the innovative Columbus Sport Hybrid 40m yacht, which picked up three awards for her fresh, elegant interior design, harmonious holistic design and environmental considerations. The judges felt that stylist Hydro Tec, interior designer Hot Lab Yacht & Design and the build team were firmly on the same page for this project and this was reflected in their decision to award multiple prizes to her talented creators.

In the Interior Design category, the 32.64m sailing yacht Inukshuk was deemed a runaway on visual appeal, functionality, use of space and innovative features. The passion of the method by which Adam Lay’s cerebral design approach met the owner’s brief — “with nature not with glamour” — was key to the win. In addition, the judges agreed that her exterior styling by Frers Naval Architecture and Engineering shows the seamlessness of the design vocabulary between naval architect and owner; resulting in a fast and safe family sailing yacht that offers exceptional comfort.

Andrew Winch and his design team were commended for their work on custom tenders to Feadship’s 99m mega yacht Madame Gu and 62m superyacht Sea Owl, resulting in a joint first-place and the studio receiving two neptunes for different tender projects.

The Young Designer of the Year Award, sponsored by Oceanco, once again produced a high standard of finalist entries from aspiring yacht designers all over the globe; many of whom were present at the gala evening. The winner, chosen by a panel of the industry’s leading yacht designers and naval architects, was judged to be Raphael Laloux for his project Symphony yacht. In the judges’ opinion, he created an elegant, well balanced vessel that entirely fulfilled design brief while introducing some novel ideas.

The final award presented was the Lifetime Achievement Award sponsored by Fincantieri Yachts, honouring yacht designer Terence Disdale who this year celebrates forty years in the superyacht industry. Guest presenter Tim Heywood described his designs as “distinctive, timelessly modern exteriors with rich, interiors that create a calming, stylish and welcoming ambience.”

Boat International Media take this opportunity to acknowledge all of the sponsors and partners of the 2014 ShowBoats Design Awards who have helped to make the event a resounding success.

Special thanks are extended to their gracious gala evening hosts and gold sponsor, Swarovski, and to silver sponsors Hodgdon Yachts and Blohm+Voss. Thank you to bronze sponsors Oceanco, who continue to support the Young Designer of the Year Award, and to RINA and Greenline Yacht Interiors. Their gratitude also goes to the new award sponsors for 2014; Boutsen Design, Fincantieri Yachts, JFA Yachts, Front Street Shipyard and to DKT Artworks who supplied the beautiful Judges’ Commendation prize.

Hodgdon-built Limo T/T SEA OWL Yacht wins ShowBoats Design Award 2014

February 26, 2014

Hodgdon Yachts is proud to announce that their Limo T/T Sea Owl yacht has received the Tender Design Award, handed over during the recent ShowBoats Design Awards 2014 ceremony in Austria. Limo T/T Sea Owl has been designed by world-renowned Andrew Winch Designs.

Ed Roberts – Director of Sales&Marketing refers: “Hodgdon Yachts is proud to share the limelight with winner Andrew Winch Designs in receiving the coveted Showboats Design Award for the best Limo Tender”. In addition: “the winning tender emulates the design of the mothership M/Y Sea Owl also designed by Andrew Winch Designs of London.  In the case of the tenders for Sea Owl,  the naval architecture and engineering was by Hodgdon’s own in-house engineering team”.

The boat was specially engineered and constructed using infused epoxy carbon fibre construction to meet the client’s demanding weight requirements.

Limo T/T superyacht Sea Owl

Limo T/T superyacht Sea Owl

The limousine tender features the exceptional craftsmanship and sophisticated systems engineering that Hodgdon is so well known for. Outside, a defining characteristic of the AWD design is a compound curve teak clad transom exceptionally executed. Inside, the full wood raised panel teak joinery interior features separate lavatory and wash basin lockers with luxury leather seating for up to 8 guests. Systems highlights include NEMA 2000 systems integrated iPad in the salon, electrically retracting glass moon roof, electrically retracting glass aft bulkhead, hydraulically lifting roof, lithium ion smart battery system and more.

This is a limo superyacht tender many of the ShowBoats Award judges said they would like to own as it makes a lovely day boat as well with air conditioning, heating and an enclosed stand-up head, but unlike a Venetian water taxi, it features an open stern deck for easier boarding. Fledgling, as she is named, is a perfect complement stylistically to her mothership, Sea Owl, and features the same level of finish detail and joinery style as the Feadship she serves. Just as Sea Owl is a fantasy, this tender would seem so as well as its half glass roof can slide away to create an indoor/outdoor atmosphere or the roof can lift vertically to provide an open air option. The charging and docking stations for phones and iPods are a nice touch, as is the 40-knots top speed.

Limo T/T motor yacht Sea Owl - aft view

This 8.6-meter luxury yacht tender echoes the clean lines, green hull and teak finishes of her mothership. She is designed to transport children and family with ease and luxurious comfort. The cockpit is situated in the bow and passengers can feel part of the cruising experience thanks to the iPad and information system that keeps them informed of location and navigational data.
