Riviera Yachts exits receivership and returns to private ownership

March 08, 2012

This sale will permit Riviera to officially exit receivership and move positively forward under private ownership.

Longhurst Marine Holdings Pty Ltd, a Queensland based investment company has purchased the Riviera assets, work in progress and associated companies for an undisclosed amount. Longhurst Marine Holdings has offered employment to the majority of Riviera staff and contractors and has also entered into a long-term lease for Riviera’s 14-hectare state-of the-art Coomera manufacturing facility.

Rodney Longhurst, the Managing Director of Longhurst Marine Holdings is well known in Queensland business circles having developed an investment portfolio in tourism and property.

Mr Longhurst already has a significant investment in the boating industry in the 9.2-hectare marine service facility “The Boat Works” located on the Coomera River within the Gold Coast Marine Precinct.

Mr Longhurst said the inherent strength of Riviera in the face of recent global market forces was the key factor that drew his interest in acquiring the business.

“I have watched how the Riviera luxury boat brand has so emphatically endured the last four years of turbulent economic conditions. For the past two years and nine months the company has operated in Receivership and during this period, local and international competition has also been particularly fierce. Yet throughout this unprecedented cycle, the Riviera brand has retained it’s integrity and has defied industry trends achieving significant results with new model releases and sales,” said Mr Longhurst.

“The very strong loyalty that Riviera owners feel toward their boat and the company is truly to be admired. This culture cannot be created overnight and is the sum total of many contributing factors over the past 32 years. World leading design, superior quality, technology innovation and a belief that Riviera owners are part of a family, not mere clients of the company; are some of the unique values that attracted me to Riviera.”

Free of Receivership constraints, Riviera will now move through a restructure and recapitalisation process to prepare the company for future growth opportunities.  Part of this process will be the creation of a new senior management team to drive the business forward.

Wes Moxey, the former CEO of Riviera and a veteran of 26 years with the company has been asked to return immediately as CEO.

After taking a 12-month sabbatical from the boating industry, Mr Moxey has spent the past 18 months immersed in the development of a new line of limited edition Motoryachts called Belize.  The Belize Motoryacht line will shortly be offered through the Riviera global dealer network of 46 dealers’ spaning 66 countries.

“Riviera has been a very large and influential part of my life and that of my family’s. I am refreshed from my sabbatical and wiser from the lessons learnt in developing the Belize Motoryacht line from scratch with our own capital. I am thrilled with this opportunity and I am ready and eager to help lead our great team forward,” said Mr Moxey.

Stephen Milne has been Riviera’s Director of Brand and Communications for the past nine years. Prior to his full time employment in 2004, Mr Milne was a contractor in marketing services for many years to Riviera. Mr Milne has been appointed as Director of Brand and Sales.

“Riviera free of Receivership, free of ownership rumour and speculation, fully recapitalised, restructured, independent and firmly focused on the future, will create a boat company of unrivalled passion. This in turn will create opportunity for our valued owners, our dealer network partners and our dedicated staff and contractors. We are extremely keen to move forward leaving the GFC in our wake,” said Mr Milne.

Chris Gilfoyle who has enjoyed a 20-year career with Riviera on the production side of the business has been appointed as Head of Manufacturing.

“The news of the purchase of Riviera was greeted today with a resounding round of applause from our assembled staff and contractors. These men and women have toiled tirelessly and unselfishly over the past three years and today’s announcement is truly a victory for the true Riviera believers. This is the best outcome possible for our business and our people stand ready for the opportunities that the future will bring,” said Mr Gilfoyle.

Mr Longhurst said, “Riviera is Australia’s favourite luxury cruiser brand. The senior Riviera management team and Longhurst Marine Holdings are going to do all we can to enhance this position. With Riviera recording its best result in four years at the Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show in Florida last month and February being the company’s best sales month in the last six months, I think our timing is perfect.

“I am proud that we have been able to help persevere 340 Gold Coast jobs and a manufacturing base in Australia. I am also proud to now be a part of Riviera’s future.”

Riviera offers 20 different models from 36 to 85 feet across four model series Flybridge, Sport Yacht, Offshore Express and Motor Yachts.

Phuket Boat Show contributes to the growth of Andaman Marine Triangle

January 30, 2012

Phuket Island, belonging to the best yacht charter locations, is at the centre of Asia‘s growing marine leisure industry . It is one of the top five cruising destinations in the world and is the centre of the emerging ‘Andaman Marine Triangle’.

PIMEX 2012 – where luxury boats and lifestyle attract buyers from around the world

PIMEX 2012 – where luxury boats and lifestyle attract buyers from around the world

Consisting of Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi provinces, the Andaman Marine Triangle is home to some of the most stunning sailing grounds in the world, and location of choice for the filming of many international blockbuster movies.

The coastline of the Andaman Marine Triangle, and associated marine leisure industry, is the single largest asset for the area’s tourism industry, the promotion of which is lead by Asia’s largest in-water boat show, the Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX). Held 29th March to 1st April 2012, PIMEX is to be held at the award-winning Royal Phuket Marina on the Island’s east coast.

Phuket is the gateway to the Andaman Marine Triangle with more than 200 direct international flights weekly from major tourist markets in Asia and Europe. The three provinces share the same coastline and marine environment, and together have become the marine playground for the rich and famous – the wealthy, the celebrities – and tourists from around the world.

With its long established and well developed infrastructure, Phuket holds a pivotal position in the Andaman Marine Triangle, and is home to four world-class marinas with a capacity of over 750 yachts.

As reported by Channel News Asia, “The amount of private wealth in Asia is estimated to triple to US$16 trillion by 2015, according to Swiss private bank Julius Baer’s annual wealth report done jointly with CLSA.” It is this growth in regional wealth, combined with the desire of boat owners wanting to relocate from traditional cruising grounds, that continues to fuel the growth of the marine leisure industry in the region.

In line with this growth, large-scale marine infrastructure in Phuket continues to develop. Further investment by established Phuket marinas is expected to be over THB500m, and a likely expansion of berth capacity of over 20%, over the next five years.

PIMEX plays an integral role in creating and stimulating demand for marine products and services in Asia. The leading consumer show in Asia, over 5,500 visitors attended the 2011 Show to view the USD100 million of boats on display, and marine and lifestyle offerings.

PMEX connects buyers with sellers in the marine and luxury lifestyle space, and with the largest in-water display in the region, allows potential buyers to view boats first hand. International buyers often then choose to leave their boats in Phuket’s marinas so they can enjoy the facilities and surrounding cruising grounds at their leisure.

The trend of marina growth can be seen expanding from Phuket to the Andaman Marine Triangle, with two new marinas in Krabi – Krabi Boat Lagoon and Krabi River View – and another – Port Takola Marina – in the pipeline, adding almost 400 berths to the triangle when complete.

Over one billion baht of marina infrastructure development is expected in the Andaman Marine Triangle over the next five years.

This bodes well for the continued growth of the region’s marine industry, as marinas in the Asian region are filling up. PIMEX is positioned as a key marketing and promotional tool for Phuket and beyond, helping to position the Andaman Marine Triangle as the marine leisure playground in Asia.

PIMEX showcases Phuket Island, Thailand and the Asia region to the marine leisure world globally. Attracting an international clientelle, organisers confirm markets of growing importance for the show and for the regional marine industry in particular, are Russia and China, with Thai buyers also on the increase.

“We welcomed over 15 visitor nationalities to PIMEX 2011 and of particular interest was the growing numbers of Russians and Chinese. Also, a number of exhibitors noted a growing trend of Thais showing interest in buying into the marine leisure lifestyle,” commented  PIMEX Show Director, Andy Dowden.

PIMEX 2012 exhibitor, Matthew Steinert of Prout International (China), added, “PIMEX is a key consumer-show boat show in Asia and we are looking forward to a successful 2012 Show.”

Targetting High Net Worth Individuals and marine leisure enthusiasts, top international boat brands on display and represented at the Boat Show, include Azimut, Bavaria, Beneteau, Boston Whaler, Elan, Fairline, Feeling, Ferretti Yachts, Formula, Fountaine Pajot, Galeon, Gulf Craft, Hanse, Jeanneau, Majesty, Monterey Boats, Nautitech Catamarans, Nautor Swan, Oryx, Pershing, Prestige Yachts, Princess, Privilege, Prout, Pursuit, Riva, Riviera, Sea Ray, Seawind Catamarans, Selene Ocean Trawler, Silvercraft, Sunseeker, Trawler Catamarans, and Tiara Yachts. Alongside them will be leading marine brands and lifestyle products including luxury real estate and marina developments.

“We are seeing more interest in exhibitors from China, Australia and New Zealand in particular this year. PIMEX has become the boat show in Asia to showcase boats, marine and lifestyle products to a large international audience,” added Dowden.

Boat Asia has grown and played a central role in developing the boating industry in Singapore and the region, with a firm commitment to promoting the business of yacht dealers and their brands as well as marinas. Boat Asia 2012 is expecting an anticipated crowd over 15,000 visitors and over 100 exhibits from the Asia-Pacific, Europe, US, Middle East, and China.

“Amidst a highly volatile economic outlook, particularly in Europe, luxury yacht brands recognize that the serious growth prospects lie in still-booming Asia, where much of the real purchasing power lies,” Said Herman Ho, Managing Director of TMX Show Productions. Boat Asia has provided these brands and their dealers and distributors with the opportunity to make quality sales contacts amongst high net worth Asian clients from India, China, Singapore and South East Asia.

With a 19 years track record, Boat Asia 2011 saw a whopping USD 30 million in boat sales sealed within a four-day period. Over 10,000 quality visitors passed through the show’s gates and serious business was transacted, such as the sale of a tri-deck Horizon superyacht for over US$11 million.

In 2012, Boat Asia will once again feature stunning line ups from leading yachts brands such as Azimut, Beneteau, Chaparal, Cranchi, Fairline, Ferretti, Gulf Craft, Horizon, Leopard, Meridian, Monte Carlo, Nautor Swan, Pershing, Riva, Riviera, Robalo, Sunseeker and many others.

At the waterfront, Boat Asia 2012 will also return with its highly popular Lifestyle concept, featuring prestigious brands such as Gaggenau, Audi and Mumm Champagne in addition to a wide range on on-land exhibitors from resort operators, charter companies, clothing and fashion brands, swimwear and sports and nautical watches. Off-the-water activities will include car displays and test-drives, a nautical fashion and swimwear show at the waterfront promenade, jazz performances, wine and whisky tasting and an exclusive timepiece showcase. The event will also partner with some of the leading private members clubs in Singapore.

“Boat Asia 2012 this year have a special focus on the growing interest in luxury charters from corporations and private banks and will, for the first time, feature an exclusive luxury private yacht charter segment,” said Herman Ho of TMX Show productions, himself an avid boater. The event will also showcase the increasing use of ‘green’ technologies in yacht building and design.

Yacht enthusiasts both old and new who are keen to get their feet wet are urged to set sail for Marina at Keppel Bay from 12-15 April 2012.
