UNESCO Experiment Revealed at Lusail Marina in Doha, Qatar

April 17, 2013

April 10 saw UNESCO Doha, in partnership with Mourjan Marinas IGY as well as Lusail Real Estate Development Company, present a new project supporting the growth of floating mangroves at Lusail Marina, situated in the beautiful Middle Eastern yacht charter location – Doha in Qatar. The experiment represents the first-of-kind to investigate the use of floating mangroves for ‘carbon sequestration’ – the capturing of carbon emissions.

The results of this pioneering experiment will help shape understanding on mitigating climate change as scientists will see if the floating mangroves have the potential to make a significant contribution to reducing atmospheric carbon levels. Floating mangroves can contribute to environmental wellbeing by reducing land based marine pollution through taking up potassium, nitrogen and phosphates. Globally, mangroves are rapidly declining in quantity, ramping up on-going attempts to better conserve them.

The project first began in March 2012, after Mourjan Marinas IGY approached UNESCO with the idea. It saw UNESCO carry out ecological observations, seed collection, preparation and planting in floating boxes developed specifically for the project by Mourjan Marina IGY.

“In the past, some have suggested producing mangroves in inland deserts under seawater irrigation to make the deserts green, however, this is a controversial approach due to the dangers of irreversible salinization of soils and ground-water, as well as habitat loss,” said Benno Boer, Ecological Sciences Advisor for UNESCO Arab Region. “Our floating mangroves experiment is totally unique and suggests an alternative method which has not yet grasped the attention of the climate change movement.”

The experiment showcases Qatar’s commitment to conserving the environment through eco-friendly projects.

“Floating mangroves can be developed into large-scale cash crop systems in the sub-tropical and tropical coastal oceans of the world, such as biofuel and livestock fodder, generating jobs, income and profit,” said Benno Boer.

“We welcome the opportunity to partner with UNESCO Doha in realising our vision for this iconic new city that is set to become a beacon for sustainable mega developments around the region,” said Eng. Essa Mohammed Ali Kaldari, CEO of Lusail Real Estate Development Company (LREDC).

As well as having the potential to bring countless benefits to the environment, the project has involved the local community at a grass roots level.  At least five university students are expected developing the medium-scale proto-types in the second phase of the activity.

“Conservation of the local environment and being as eco-friendly as we can is extremely important to Mourjan Marinas IGY – we ensure that all of our marinas are built and maintained with the greatest sensitivity to the local environment,” said Wayne Sheperd, General Manager at Mourjan Marinas IGY. “For a long time it has been Mourjan’s vision to have this break-through initiative incorporated into the design and construction of our marinas, and we are delighted to partner with UNESCO and Lusail Real Estate Development Company to make it a reality. We are excited to see the outcomes of the experiment.”

The experimental mangroves made the switch from fifty per cent seawater, fifty per cent freshwater irrigation to one hundred per cent seawater irrigation in January 2013.  Salt-marsh plants (Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Halocnemum strobilaceum, Halopeplis perfoliata, Saliconia sinus-persica and Suaeda arabica) produced from cuttings have also been added to further growth ahead of the Mangrove flowering period (March – June).

“Lusail City’s involvement in environmental initiatives is a big priority to us,” added Alf Alf Ziegler, Environmental & Sustainability Manager, LREDC. “As Qatar’s premier lifestyle destination, we are excited to contribute to global research on an area of significant scientific interest.”

The floating mangroves can be viewed in their planter boxes at Lusail Marina, Lusail City.

Also on display were other popular Gulf Craft models including the Majesty 63, the Majesty 70 and Majesty 77.

“We were delighted by the fantastic response to our Majesty Yacht range in Qatar. We sold two Majesty Yachts during the event, which is a result of the strong relationship we have with our clientele in Qatar – a country which has a traditional affinity for the sea and a culture of yachting,” said Mohamed Hussain AlShaali, Chairman of Gulf Craft. “In fact, the Qatari market has been making up nearly 20% of our revenues recently and our customers there appreciate the finer aspects of yacht-building. It is always a pleasure to showcase our range in Doha as customers not only appreciate sailing and cruising as a recreational activity, but also have a connoisseur’s eye for well-engineered yachts built to a high finishing standard.”

Speaking about the response to the preview and the Qatari market, Erwin Bamps, Chief Operating Officer for Gulf Craft, said: “It was heartening to see the level of interest in our Majesty Yachts range among Qataris, however, it was not a surprise. We are market leaders in Qatar and already have a large number of vessels of all dimensions berthed in Doha’s marinas – and this number increased further during the event with the sale of two Majesty Yachts. Our dealers in this market ensure that Gulf Craft’s Qatari customers get the best in terms of service and technical support. The ‘Majesty Yachts Exclusive Preview’ is our way of being close to our customers here and to show our commitment to the Qatari market.”

The event marks the Qatari premiere of the new motor yacht Majesty 125 – Gulf Craft’s third-largest superyacht model, and a brand new Majesty 105 yacht – a revolutionary superyacht model that received high praise for its excellent outdoor entertainment capabilities at the recently concluded Dubai International Boat Show 2013, and at last year’s Dubai edition where the model was launched.

The yacht line-up also features other popular Gulf Craft models including the Majesty 56, Majesty 63 and the Majesty 70 yacht.

Qatar is a market that is highly boating oriented and a booming one for Gulf Craft. We have delivered a number of yachts and superyachts to Qatar in recent years, a development which has coincided with the number of new marinas that have come online in the country,” says Mohamed Hussain AlShaali, Chairman of Gulf Craft.

“There is a high interest in larger-sized yachts, to almost the same degree as in the UAE. We consider Qatar a home market and following the interest received at the Dubai Boat Show, we were keen to showcase some of our most popular models to the Qataris on their home turf,” he added. “We presented a similar showcase in late 2011 which was very positively met and indicated a very strong interest in what we bring to the market.”

Erwin Bamps, Chief Operating Officer, added: “The appetite for larger yachts in the Gulf market has progressed in line with Gulf Craft’s own inroads into the global superyacht industry. We have completed 7 superyachts above 30m in the past year alone, a significant slice of the international pie considering the global superyacht order deliveries in 2012 stood at only just over 200 yachts.”

He continued: “As the leader in the boat and yachting market in Qatar, we are strongly committed to this market and have strong dealer partnerships that ensure that our clients are fully supported in terms of technical support and maintenance.“

Visitors to the Majesty Yachts Exclusive Preview are able to tour the superyachts on display from 4pm – 10pm, March 28th-30th, with a special “Ladies Only” viewing arranged for the morning of March 30th from 10am – 3pm.

HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Fahd Al Thani, State Minister, and Muhammad Ghannam, Chairman of NDSQ, signed the contract for the 69m Nakilat Damen superyacht at a ceremony held in Doha, Qatar, on March 19.

The customized 69m Nakilat Damen yacht will be built at Qatar’s state-of-the-art Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard by NDSQ, the shipbuilding joint venture between Qatari shipping company Nakilat and Dutch shipbuilding group Damen Shipyards.

Based on the proven axe-bow hull of Damen’s 67m Sea-Axe navy, coastguard and yacht support vessels, the vessel will be equipped with the latest technology and will reach speeds of up 20 knots.

The signing ceremony has announced NDSQ’s entry into the superyacht new-build market, with the company ready to accommodate the world’s biggest luxury vessels. NDSQ’s facilities at Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard include a 180m long x 70m wide x 50m high hall for the finishing and refit of high-value vessels, featuring two separate, fully climate-controlled bays.

The signing of the 69m Nakilat Damen fast luxury yacht expands the list of milestone achievements recently publicized by NDSQ. In January NDSQ inaugurated the 140m barge Al Ghatroushah, the largest vessel ever to have been constructed in Qatar. NDSQ also launched six built-in-Qatar mooring boats in November 2012 and is working on a further 13 vessels destined for use at Qatar’s Port of Mesaieed.

Upon the occasion of the signing ceremony, HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Fahd Al Thani said: “We are very proud of this great achievement, which represents a key milestone in HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani’s Qatar National Vision 2030. Our fully integrated marine industry will play a major role in the future development of Qatar and we are delighted to be placing this order for the first vessel of this type to be built in Qatar, for Qatar.”

Muhammad Ghannam commented: “We are honored to be given this opportunity to deliver this landmark yacht project in Qatar. NDSQ continues to prove Qatar’s shipbuilding capabilities while Nakilat, Damen and NDSQ are all fully committed to realizing His Highness’s vision for world-class shipbuilding in Qatar.”

Kommer Damen, Chairman of Damen Shipyards Group, said
: “We are proud of our partnership with Nakilat and we intend to supply all the necessary support and knowhow for NDSQ to become a premier shipbuilder for all vessel types.”

NDSQ is a joint venture between Nakilat and Dutch shipbuilder Damen and is based at Erhama Bin Jaber Al Jalahma Shipyard in Ras Laffan, Qatar. NDSQ began operations in 2010 and builds ships in steel, aluminum and fiber reinforced plastic (FRP), up to 170m in length. In addition to the hall dedicated to the finishing and refit of high-value vessels, NDSQ’s facilities include a construction hall of 270m long x 65m wide; a 180m-long assembly hall consisting of four bays; a 400m-long outfitting pier equipped with a 30-tonne crane; a load-out and recovery barge with a lift capacity of 10,500 tonnes; workshops, stores and other support facilities.

Nakilat is a Qatari marine company providing the critical transportation link in Qatar’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply chain, overseeing the activities of the country’s world-class shipyard, and assisting vessels in Qatari waters. Established in 2004 as a joint stock company — owned 50 per cent by its founding shareholders and 50 per cent by the public — Nakilat has the largest LNG shipping fleet in the world, comprising 54 LNG vessels.

Damen Shipyards Group was established in 1927 and operates more than 50 shipyards, repair yards and related companies worldwide. Damen employs over 7,000 people in 35 countries, has delivered over 5,000 vessels since 1969 and delivers some 150 vessels annually to worldwide customers. Based on its unique, standardized ship-design concept and short delivery times, Damen is able to guarantee consistent quality.

Oman developing its reputation as ‘Yachting Destination Dream’

February 11, 2013

Oman is sailing closer to its ‘Yachting Destination Dream’. The opening of new marinas, as well as the growing request for larger sized yachts are the evidence of a maturing market.

Oman is taking firm steps towards developing its reputation as a premier leisure cruising destination, says Erwin Bamps, Chief Operating Officer of Gulf Craft.

Gulf Craft, who had a presence at the Mussanah Marina Grand Opening event in Oman through its partners OHI Marine, says the Omani market for luxury superyachts is on the rise.

The brand new Mussanah Marina, located 85km off the coast of Muscat, offers 54 quality berths, dock-side support and first class facilities, including boat cleaning, assistance upon arrival and disembarkment and a fuel dock and adds yet another premier berthing facility to Oman’s steadily increasing inventory.

Gulf Craft currently has more boats in Omani marinas than any other single boat and yacht brand and offers a full local service support team in Oman through its partner OHI Marine. Last year, Gulf Craft delivered the Majesty 121 yacht to Oman – the largest-ever Gulf Craft hull to make its way to the country. The Majesty 121 is berthed at the Shangri-La- managed Barr Al Jissah Marina, one of the capital city’s leading marinas.

With The Wave’s recently completed Al Mouj Marina welcoming its first yachts and boats last year, Oman is taking firm steps towards establishing its reputation as a highly desirable yachting and boating destination.

A 1,200km coastline, several high-profile waterfront real estate developments and luxury hospitality offerings, superb diving, snorkeling and fishing opportunities, a dramatic coastline featuring fjords, pristine bays and coves and a slew of new marinas coming online along the Musandam, Sawadi and Salalah coastlines is pushing Oman’s prominence on the yachting circuit higher. Oman is already a preferred berthing destination for yacht-owners from the UAE and this is expected to increase as more space comes online and facilities improve further in the coming years.

“In the past few years we have witnessed healthy demand from the Omani market and have delivered not only an increasing number of pleasure craft but also yachts which is evidence of a maturing clientele,” says Erwin Bamps. “Our clients for superyachts currently extend across the globe, with a growing and more prominent presence in the European and the Middle East region. Our home market of the Gulf continues to be very strong and is being led by new yachting destinations such as Qatar, UAE and now Oman,” he continued.

“Oman’s increased focus on marina development – with space being added to berth super and megayachts – as well as its investment in maintenance and fuelling facilities and waterfront destination development shows serious intent in positioning leisure cruising as a tourism draw,” added Bamps. “The country is ideally positioned to capitalize on stopover traffic from yachts crossing over from the Mediterranean and the Red Sea onto the Indian Ocean islands and beyond to South East Asia,” he added.

Mohamed will make the move to Qatar following a successful three years at Dubai Marina Yacht Club, where he worked as Marina Administration Manager. His primary responsibilities in his new role will include overseeing berthing agreements, planning and implementing the Marina Maintenance Programme across both facilities, managing operations and marina administration staff and ensuring all policies and regulations are met with Mourjan Marinas IGY’s standards.

Wayne Shepherd, General Manager Marina Operations Mourjan Marinas IGY, said: “Mohamed joins Mourjan Marinas IGY at an exciting time. As we continue to strengthen our regional presence, Mohamed’s experiences and knowledge of the industry will have a significant impact on our Qatar operations. We are confident that, along with the rest of our team, Mohamed will help steer Mourjan Marinas IGY into its next phase of growth.”

Mohamed spent seven years working in the marina management industry in Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. Whilst at Dubai Marina Yacht Club he was primarily responsible for sales and customer service of the marina, which he managed successfully in keeping the occupancy levels above 95 per cent. Mohamed also played an active role in driving revenues up by 20 per cent in 2012 by creating additional concourse berths and converting larger berths into smaller ones in order to meet demand.

Mohamed’s appointment follows another recent appointment by the marina operator, with Khalil AbuJaber taking on the role of Marina Manager at Oman’s Almouj Marina at The Wave, Muscat.

Lusail Marina celebrated its one year anniversary in June. The marina can accommodate 93 yachts between 10-40 metres in length. The marina has been built from the very best materials to meet the highest environmental management standards. In line with all Mourjan Marina managed facilities, Lusail Marina currently boasts a five-star concierge service, 24-hour security and marina cart service. Lusail Marina is located within the futuristic Lusail City development, one of the most ambitious real estate projects in Qatar and the wider Middle East.

The marina also offers a boat ramp, round the clock security, Dockmaster assistance, along with seven-day per week fuel service for both diesel and petrol.

Jewers Doors installs tallest ever doors at the new Nakilat superyacht facility in Qatar

June 21, 2012

The UK-based privately owned, family company dedicated to the design, manufacture as well as installation of specialist industrial doors and aircraft hangar doors, Jewers Doors, has recently lifted into place doors that are 45 metres high at the new Nakilat superyacht facility in Qatar. These are the tallest doors the company has ever built in its 29-year history.

The new facility is phase 4A of an ongoing development by international construction group, Eversendai Corporation at Nakilat Ship Repair Yard, Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar. The superyacht hall is being built for the final outfitting and painting of superyacht hulls as well as for refitting and upgrading superyachts and naval vessels.

Jewers Doors installed two of our Esavian doors totalling 45.1m high and 69.9m wide. Each door weighs 68 tonnes and three giant cranes where used in the lifting process. Although these are by far the tallest doors Jewers Doors has built and may well be some of the largest sliding doors in the world, in terms of area they are actually smaller than the 582m by 25.85m doors Jewers Doors supplied for the Royal Airwing hangar at Dubai International Airport.

It is the Jewers Doors’ unmatched experience of supplying large doors together with their long history of successful contract completions in the Middle East that helped them secure the Nakilat superyacht facility contract.

Esavian Director, Jonathan Jewers, says: “There is definitely a trend towards larger and larger buildings, especially in the aircraft and shipping maintenance and repair sectors. Just a few years ago we were supplying doors 21 metres high and 100 metres wide for aircraft hangars and now dimensions of 28 metres and 240 metres (sometimes multiples of these) are quite common. Together with the increase in size, our Esavian doors now have sophisticated safety and control mechanisms and class-leading ‘green’ features.”
