ICON Yachts Design Challenge: The Awards

May 02, 2013

The four Designers’ luxury superyacht conversion projects of the 59m HR MS Blommendal survey vessel by Boele from 1973 have been carefully examined as part of the ICON YACHTS DESIGN CHALLENGE. Dixon Yacht Design, Ivan Erdevicki, H2 Yacht Design and Newcruise have all created distinctive designs and ICON rewarded each one of them for their unique and characteristic strengths.

ICON Yachts - Conversion Project 2013

ICON Yachts Conversion Project 2013

Best contemporary design – Newcruise

Newcruise’s previous conversions have included the explorer-style motor yachts Penguin, 55m and Absinthe yacht, 62m – and they followed the theme here. ‘We see it as an ocean discovery vessel for a private owner, worldwide cruising from Arctic waters to equatorial destinations under safe and comfortable conditions,’ says Newcruise owner and director Roland Krueger. ‘This picks up from her classic duties as a training ship for Dutch naval crews.’

The look is contemporary, with natural wave-like curves in the forward superstructure preventing sleek lines veering into aggressiveness.

‘It is a balanced design maintaining the vessels history while adjusting the volumes thoughtfully to their new intended purpose,’ says Krueger.

Best classic design – Ivan Erdevicki

Ivan Erdevicki’s completed refit conversions include a 1924 vintage 18m wooden sailing yacht and a 38m all aluminium crew vessel. In this instance, he took a conservative approach.

‘The plan was to retain the original classical hull lines and integrate sympathetically and seamlessly the new modernised superstructure,’ he says,

‘to retain the backbone of the old superstructure (base, exhaust stack, funnel) and with extended decks, achieve spacious accommodation and entertainment decks.’

Best futuristic design – H2 Yacht Design

H2 Yacht Design approached the challenge as a communal exercise, asking members of the design team to draw their vision, then choosing the one that Design Director Jonny Horsfield felt most likely to, ‘Capture the imagination of a client looking for something different.’

Best state-of-the-art design – Dixon Yacht Design

Dixon Yacht Design turned in a modern interpretation of the explorer yacht lifestyle. ‘Our aim was to complement the classic hull with a low-profile superstructure and enhanced space,’ says Bill Dixon, director of Dixon Yacht Design.

‘We have added promenade decks aft, while extending the superstructure forward allows the bridge to be enlarged and relocated to provide a higher skydeck with panoramic views.’

Citing contemporary trends in architecture and industrial design as influences, Dixon also worked with rather than against features such as the funnel.

Successful Future of Technology for Yachts seminar by e3 Systems

April 30, 2013

The seminar hosted by e3 Systems just before the start of the Antibes Yacht Show last week at the Automobile Club de Monaco proved to be very successful. The keynote presentation was given by Dr. Waguih Ishak from Corning Glass who captured the audience with Corning’s vision of how are lives will be changed by interactive glass.

Corning Glass

Corning Glass

Dr Ishak also gave a fascinating insight into how research and development is conducted in Silicon Valley, home to Corning and many other high tech companies. The region acts as an incubator for much of the technology we now live with and also for that of the future.

Delegates included yacht designers, representatives from shipyards, yacht fleet managers, technical managers, captains and ETOS. Other complementary presentations were given by speakers from Global IP, Van Berge Henegouwen, Monaco Telecom and e3 Systems. The emphasis was firmly on “Future Technology for Yachts” and there was much discussion on the needs of today’s “connected” society and how this impacts upon life aboard a yacht – both for owners and crew. There was also a lot of debate about the fast changing nature of communications and entertainment systems on-board.

The Automobile Club proved an outstanding venue. Delegates were given the perfect opportunity to continue discussions and network with colleagues from other areas of the industry over aperitifs served in the garden, followed by lunch in the Members’ Dining Room. The dress code for gentlemen in the Club was “smart” so deck shoes and polo shirts were left on board and jackets and ties were dusted off and given an airing.

Reaction from the delegates was very positive.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the seminar which was very informative. The venue (and food) was great and I look forward to joining you for the next event.” Fabien Roché, International Yacht Collection.

“It truly has given me an insight into the future of this industry. Without this type of event, to gain knowledge about the future, we would seriously need to keep up by reading and networking constantly, which, let’s be frank, many of us don’t have the time for!” Captain Marcel Busse.

“The subjects in the Seminar Future Technology for Yachts were indeed interesting and enjoyable. The venue for the Seminar was excellent and the catering was more than good.”  Michel Dol, Amels.

e3 Systems plan to make this an annual event to showcase technology of the future.

Arie de Boom Marine Director appointed to the board of SNBR

April 26, 2013

The Arie de Boom Marine director, Roxanne de Boom, has become a new member of the board of SNBR (Société Nautique et Balnéaire de La Rague), the public body charged with overseeing the long-term maintenance as well as strategic development of Port de La Rague. This represents one of the most enchanting full-service yacht harbours in the popular French yacht charter destination – Cote d’Azur.

ADB

Port de La Rague is the Cote d’Azur home of Arie de Boom, which also manages prime site marinas in The Netherlands and other service locations, as well its substantial new-boat sales and brokerage operations. Indeed, via its wholly owned subsidiary SEPR, Arie de Boom is responsible for the overall management of Port de La Rague that caters for everything from small ‘30-something’ all the way up to 130ft superyachts.

Lying just five miles to the southwest of Cannes, Port de La Rague is a very special yacht haven, one with real character, developed from a natural harbour and tucked out of the way beneath a striking rail-bridge landmark. It ranks as a medium-size Cote d’Azur marina, but, thanks to SNBR and Arie de Boom’s 35-year involvement, has over the years acquired all the essential attributes ‒ mini-market, snack-bar, bistros and boutiques, not to mention a diving school – and all just a short walk away from glorious private and public beaches.

Arie de Boom Marine is a real family business. Longstanding chairman Alex de Boom represents the third generation to run the family business, but, with his daughter Roxanne now a key member of the management team, the company is clearly on track for the fourth generation. Before an early management career in the retail fashion industry, where she worked with brands such as Scapa and Burberry, Roxanne de Boon studied cultural economics at Erasmus University, her father’s old university.

Before joining the family business properly, her first professional foray into the marine industry was when she helped her father establish the European office for yacht stabiliser manufacturer Wesmar.

“I am very proud to be working alongside my daughter,” says Alex de Boom, and so pleased our company is as rock solid today as it was before the financial crisis. Our business has grown through hard work and constant re-investment without debt. Roxanne’s professionalism in everything she does will help ensure that we as a business continue to go from strength to strength and that, via her SNBR input, Port de La Rague will do too.”

Roxanne de Boom is equally effusive of her day-to-day role within Arie de Boom and in being able to help steer Port de La Rague’s future course. “I have a huge respect for what my family has achieved and am thrilled to now play my part,” says Roxanne de Boom… “And I am truly honoured to have been invited to join the SNBR board and help deliver what we hope will be another step change as regards capacity and capabilities at Port de La Rague.”

PlanetSolar at first port of call for 2013

April 17, 2013

Run by photovoltaic power, the world’s largest solar boat, PlanetSolar, has crossed the 1,600 kilometres separating La Ciotat in France from Rabat in Morocco, representing the first port of call for the 2013 PlanetSolar campaign. Thanks to support from the Bouregreg Marina as well as the Swiss Embassy in Morocco, events dedicated to local authorities and children will take place aboard the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar. Subsequently, the boat will be prepared to repeat its transatlantic crossing during which it will attempt to smash its own speed record, and then to start the scientific expedition along the Gulf Stream. Stopover will last until 20 April, 2013.

PlanetSolar in Rabat, Morocco

PlanetSolar in Rabat, Morocco

Departing from La Ciotat (France) on 8 April, the solar vessel crossed the Mediterranean then to cross the tricky Strait of Gibraltar, along the African coast and finally to reach Rabat, the capital of Morocco on 16 April. After some nine days at sea, Captain Gérard d’Aboville drops anchor at the Bouregreg Marina in the heart of the Moroccan city, happy to reach the end of the first 2013 sailing: “we faced many challenges during this stage, as it’s the first time since its maintenance service that the boat was able to sail the high seas longer than 24 hours, under difficult conditions at times. This is what particularly led us to realise how well the boat handled! Reaching this stage and arriving at Rabat is the first success for the 2013 campaign”.

The arrival of the world’s largest solar boat is also a source of joy for Rabat. To organise its arrival, PlanetSolar was able to count on support from both the Bouregreg Marina and the Swiss Embassy in Morocco. The ambassador, His Excellency Bertrand Louis enthusiastically stated that “the arrival of PlanetSolar in Rabat was awaited with much interest and excitement.

The Swiss Embassy is very happy to be associated with this event which highlights a unique and innovative project that illustrates the contribution of Switzerland to protecting the environment and sustainable development. Thanks to these “adventurers”, Switzerland can stand shoulder to shoulder with its partners in the international scientific community.

So, its scientific diplomacy is an integral part of its foreign policy, an instrument of dialogue on global challenges such as water, climate change or energy.  With Morocco and its extraordinarily visionary solar plan, this is about drawing together the capacity to meet the immense challenge of producing renewable energy”.

Moreover, the solar boat enjoys a warm welcome from the Bouregreg Marina: “Welcoming PlanetSolar to the heart of the Bouregreg Valley is an important moment for us. Not only are we happy to welcome the world’s unique vessel, with remarkable special features, but we also share the common vision of sustainable development”, declared Lemghari Essakl, Director General of the agency responsible for the rehabilitation of the Bouregreg Valley. This stopover in the Kingdom of Morocco will give PlanetSolar the opportunity to meet the media and local authorities to introduce them to the solar catamaran and its next missions at which time it will demonstrate its practical uses.

Furthermore, PlanetSolar will continue to distribute its message in favour of renewable energy and more particularly to the young generations, by welcoming on board several school classes from the Rabat region. It will revolve around introducing the children to the solar vessel and making them aware of climate issues. The departure is scheduled for 20 April.

Rabat, departure point for the new transatlantic crossing

For the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar and her crew, Rabat will also be the departure point for one of the longest non-stop sailing segments of the 2013 campaign, crossing the South Atlantic. A route already sailed in 2010 during the Around the World which earned PlanetSolar its first entry into the Guinness World Records for the fastest transatlantic crossing by a solar boat, ie 26 days 19 hours and 10 minutes. This year, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar will reach the island of St. Martin (the French side of the island) by trying to break this record.

“PlanetSolar DeepWater”, a scientific expedition on the trail of the Gulf Stream

From May to August 2013, the crew led by Professor Martin Beniston, climatologist and director of the Institute of Environmental Sciences at the University of Geneva, will sail along the Gulf Stream ocean current, one of the most important regulators of the European and North American climate, thereby covering more than 8,000 kilometres from Miami (US) to Bergen (Norway) passing through New York (US), Boston (US) and Reykjavik (Iceland).

A series of ongoing physical and biological measurements will be taken of the water and of the air to study key parameters of cliamte control, particularly atmospheric aerosols and phytoplankton. Powered by solar energy, the vessel will not emit any pollutant that might skew the data collected.

The objective of the scientists is to understand the complex interactions between physics, biology and the climate, which will eventually refine climate simulation, particularly linked to energy exchanges between the ocean and the atmosphere. Moreover, the project will make the public aware of climate issues through the development of activities and educational resources.
