The Oceans Polar Circle expedition: New scientific adventure for TARA Yacht

May 21, 2013

Sunday, May 19, saw the 36m expedition yacht Tara begin a new scientific adventure: The Oceans Polar Circle expedition. Tara yacht will travel 25 000 ams around the Arctic Ocean via the Northeast as well as Northwest passages, returning to Lorient in France in December 2013.

The Tara Yacht's Oceans Polar Circle Expedition

The Tara Yacht's Oceans Polar Circle Expedition

The new challenge brings together biologists and oceanographers to focus on plankton biodiversity in the Arctic. Research will be conducted at the edge of the ice pacha where plankton is most abundant.

Circumnavigating the Arctic Ocean, Tara Oceans Polar Circle will complete the main objective of the Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2012): to collect plankton in all the oceans of the world. Indeed, the Arctic is the only ocean missing form our global study of plankton. Other issues will also be explored: the assessment of mercury levels in the atmosphere and in the sea, and the concentration of plastic particles. Our aim is to obtain new measurements of these pollutants in the Arctic, and better assess their impact on the arctic ecosystem.

Extreme conditions
Sailing yacht Tara will be sailing in an environment where natural conditions are difficult. Although the period of thaw lengthens every year, time is short before the ice closes in between the Northeast and Northwest passages, leaving little room for improvisation. Beyond the Arctic Circle, temperatures vary between -10 ° C and +5 ° C in summer. Daylight will constant in the Russian Arctic (midnight sun) and then gradually diminish to 12 hours per day in September.

The context
The Arctic region is subjected to the efforts of accelerated climate change more intensely than anywhere else, as evidenced by the rapid melting of the ice pack in summer. This unique and fragile environment is increasingly coveted for its minerals and other riches, and is a key area for understanding climate change on the planet.

Summary of the scientific mission
- Comparison of biological data on plankton and their physicochemical environment in the Arctic with the data collected in other oceans during the Tara Oceans expedition (2009-2012)
- Study of floating plastic, and mercury (dissolved and atmospheric) present in the Arctic.
- Study of the “coolr” of the ocean, its composition and surface pigment particles.
- Specific study of spring phytoplankton blooms at the ice pack’s edge.

Giraglia Rolex Cup 2013, June 14 – 22

May 16, 2013

The Giraglia Rolex Cup, a race that has annually taken place since 1953, will return from June 14 to 22, 2013. Organized by the Yacht Club Italiano in partnership with the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, the weeklong event has long captured the imagination of the Mediterranean sailing community, and has experienced an important revival since Rolex’s emergence as title sponsor in 1998.

This year’s proceedings commence with a prologue race from Sanremo to Saint-Tropez on Friday 14 June. The three days of inshore racing in and around the Gulf of Saint-Tropez that follow are an opportunity for the fleet to sharpen teamwork and tactics – with the town’s famous and eye-catching Vieux Port as a backdrop – ahead of the offshore race beginning on Wednesday 19 June.

Although a distinctly Franco-Italian event – the 243-nautical mile distance race runs from Saint Tropez to Genoa, via the Giraglia rock off the northern tip of Corsica – the 200 plus fleet regularly features scores of international yachts and comprises both fully professional and Corinthian crews.

With race record holder superyacht Esimit Europa 2 not competing, an open field is expected for the battle to be first home in 2013. Among the likely pacesetters are three Mini Maxis who have shown impressive results recently: Sir Peter Ogden’s 62-ft sailing yacht Jethou (GBR), overall winner at the 2012 Rolex Volcano Race; Hap Fauth’s 72-ft yacht Bella Mente (USA), current Mini Maxi Rolex World Champion; and the 72-ft luxury yacht Shockwave (USA), owned by George Sakellaris, Giraglia Rolex Cup winner in 2010 under former owner Neville Crichton.

Last year’s overall race winner – determined by the rating system applied to the fleet – hailed from Switzerland, in the shape of Franck Noel’s TP52 Near Miss. In a democratic race with every yacht capable of victory, the crews’ ability to cope with the prevailing conditions during a contest that is often characterized by two distinct stages – the legs to and from the Giraglia rock – is decisive.

Jenny and Simon Wilmshurst-Smith embarked on their cruise from Brixham Marina to Camaret-Sur-Mer aboard their yacht Fenicia, setting out the day before and enjoying the beautiful scenery during the 31 hour passage.

After a warm welcome by the marina staff in France, who were delighted to welcome their first UK customers as part of the Passport Escales programme, it wasn’t long before Jenny and Simon settled in and set out to discover the delights of Brittany. Since then they have continued on to Port Louis and Port Haliguen and have expressed their delight with the scheme.

Passport Escales was launched on 1st April 2013 and gives MDL’s annual berth holders a completely unique package to gain free visitor nights at an additional 57 marinas on the northwest coast of France – all within their annual berthing fee. Berth holders can take advantage of the scheme for the rest of the season, which is an easy-to-use, fully automated online system. It works as a reciprocal programme where berth holders check out of their marinas and choose another marina to stay at from the network. The only condition of the scheme is boaters must check out upon leaving.

Latest 120m mega yacht STRADIVARIUS concept designed by Alex McDiarmid

May 13, 2013

Based in the South of France, the UK designer Alex McDiarmid is delighted to present his latest superyacht concept, the impressive 120-metre mega yacht Stradivarius.

New 120m mega yacht Stradivarius by Alex McDiarmid

New 120m mega yacht Stradivarius by Alex McDiarmid

To celebrate its 2nd anniversary today of what continues to be an inspirational, creative and international voyage of discovery for the design studio, Alex McDiarmid return to its concept series of visionary Superyachts.

The past 12 months have attracted international headlines written by leading journalists and authoritative industry subject voices in some of the worlds most prestigious journals and magazines both in print and on line across the yachting, design, style and luxury sectors. Baptised the L’Enfant Terrible of Yacht Design by various press and shortlisted in McDiarmid’s first ever design awards ceremony with the 87m superyacht Iwana at last month’s IY&A Awards 2013, the studio’s reputation for avant garde, futuristic Superyacht concepts and designs in its own inimitable style never fails to draw attention, impress, and open discussion wherever they appear.

As always, inspiration is diverse and of a non nautical philosophy resulting in a concept inspired by stringed musical instruments. Another ‘string to our bow’ so to speak while McDiarmid continue exploring design language, form and style along with its day to day work. The studio’s valued and continued close working relationship with Capt. Adrian McCourt, MD of London based brokers, Watkins Superyachts and Richard Maurer President of US based AquaVenture WaterCrafts – builders of the world’s fastest personal submarine SeaBird, continues to strengthen the studio’s name within the international yachting arena.

Stradivarius – 120m – Music Maestro Please:

Following a recent visit to the inspirational city of Venice and the Museo della Musica Di Venezia / The Venice Music Museum McDiarmid looked at the stringed instruments on display from harps to cellos, double bases, violins and violas produced throughout the ages.

These simple yet elegant instrument forms produce stunning sounds. Violins are like little wooden ships that sale on through time and by any measure a violin is an object of beauty and an object of extravagant curves and lines. They say choosing a violin is like falling in love. McDiarmid began to carefully inspect each element of the instruments design noting it’s technical geometry which has not really changed in over 450 years.

McDiarmid witnessed the workshop construction process of various stringed instruments including the selection, preparation and working of various materials all while listening to Le Quattro Stagioni Di Antonio Vivaldi / The Four Seasons By Antonio Vivaldi. The inspiration flowed as the studio observed and read about instruments by Stradivarius, Amati and Guarneri, the Italian master violin makers who flourished in Cremona, Italy from 1549 to 1740. Look carefully and you will see that these instruments share similar geometry and construction principles with yacht design.

Design Thinking – The Architect of Sound inspires a Design Merchant in Venice:

A Stradivarius or Strad is one of the violins, cellos, and other stringed instruments built by members of the Stradivari (Stradivarius) family, in particular Antonio Stradivari, during the 17th and 18th centuries. According to their reputation, the quality of their sound has defied attempts to explain or equal it. The name “Stradivarius” has become unrivalled and often associated with excellence. To be called “the Stradivari” of any field is to be deemed the finest there is, much like building and owning a Superyacht.

The master violin maker Antonio Stradivari’s instruments were made during his “golden period” from 1700 to 1725 and are considered his finest works. These beautifully hand crafted instruments mixed the highest standards of craftsmanship and machine shop abilities of the times to give the player/owner a very personal product, much like owning a superyacht. Using the finest materials of the day, in particular certain grades of selected and prepared woods, the main bodies of such instruments appear to almost ‘skin’ the instrument. They have a certain technical meets natural organic beauty – timeless beauty – with the tail, bridge, strings, ribs, belly, neck, scroll and bow tip.

The overall side profile of such instruments lend themselves very nicely to the profile of a Superyacht.

Observing the construction of such stringed instruments we noticed the striking similarities to superyacht construction. Evident from the outset was the pure craftsmanship of the very highest quality. Box and modular construction of the instruments main belly and back (the hull, bulwarks and bulkheads of the yacht) and the marriage of the tail piece, neck and scroll (the super structure) The bridge is of course the bridge.

McDiarmid also looked at the various types of bows used to play instruments and learnt about three violin bow heads: transitional, swan-bill head and pike-head. These inspired the reverse bow design that flows up, into, through and over its concept.

The tuning pegs on the neck of such instruments inspired anchor lockers, mooring guides and window graphics while the neck/hand area inspires a deep set hull window for a sensational view of the water whilst on board.

The f-holes (sound holes) provide atrium like glazing inspiration while a huge, main deck curved ‘glazed wall’ aft allows natural day light in.

In case you were wondering, a violin has excellent sea keeping qualities, floating very well if placed in water. Could yacht building learn anything from violin making in terms of evolution or revolution? Time will tell.

Technical/Principal Characteristics of the new 120m superyacht Stradivarius by Alex McDiarmid:

Length overall: 120m / 393ft
Beam: 20m / 65ft
Owner state room and private decks
Berth capacity for guests 16 in 8 cabins
Berth capacity for crew 30
A hybrid power Diesel Electric propulsion system with pod drives, electric Voith Inline Propulsors/thrusters, Volvo Penta D16 MG gensets, Valance batteries.
The hull is made from steel while the superstructure is in aluminium, the more common combination for a yacht of this size. But why not 100% all composite…

ICON Yachts Design Challenge: The Awards

May 02, 2013

The four Designers’ luxury superyacht conversion projects of the 59m HR MS Blommendal survey vessel by Boele from 1973 have been carefully examined as part of the ICON YACHTS DESIGN CHALLENGE. Dixon Yacht Design, Ivan Erdevicki, H2 Yacht Design and Newcruise have all created distinctive designs and ICON rewarded each one of them for their unique and characteristic strengths.

ICON Yachts - Conversion Project 2013

ICON Yachts Conversion Project 2013

Best contemporary design – Newcruise

Newcruise’s previous conversions have included the explorer-style motor yachts Penguin, 55m and Absinthe yacht, 62m – and they followed the theme here. ‘We see it as an ocean discovery vessel for a private owner, worldwide cruising from Arctic waters to equatorial destinations under safe and comfortable conditions,’ says Newcruise owner and director Roland Krueger. ‘This picks up from her classic duties as a training ship for Dutch naval crews.’

The look is contemporary, with natural wave-like curves in the forward superstructure preventing sleek lines veering into aggressiveness.

‘It is a balanced design maintaining the vessels history while adjusting the volumes thoughtfully to their new intended purpose,’ says Krueger.

Best classic design – Ivan Erdevicki

Ivan Erdevicki’s completed refit conversions include a 1924 vintage 18m wooden sailing yacht and a 38m all aluminium crew vessel. In this instance, he took a conservative approach.

‘The plan was to retain the original classical hull lines and integrate sympathetically and seamlessly the new modernised superstructure,’ he says,

Best futuristic design – H2 Yacht Design

Best state-of-the-art design – Dixon Yacht Design

Dixon Yacht Design turned in a modern interpretation of the explorer yacht lifestyle. ‘Our aim was to complement the classic hull with a low-profile superstructure and enhanced space,’ says Bill Dixon, director of Dixon Yacht Design.

‘We have added promenade decks aft, while extending the superstructure forward allows the bridge to be enlarged and relocated to provide a higher skydeck with panoramic views.’

Citing contemporary trends in architecture and industrial design as influences, Dixon also worked with rather than against features such as the funnel.
