Fairline to launch its Squadron 78 CUSTOM motor yacht MATCH 2 at British Motor Yacht Show 2013

May 17, 2013

The well-known UK luxury motor yacht builder, Fairline Boats, will launch its most customised model ever, the Squadron 78 CUSTOM motor yacht MATCH 2, at the upcoming British Motor Yacht Show in Swanwick.

This has been one of the Fairline Yacht Division’s most exciting and challenging build projects to-date, and following initial discussions in the summer of 2011 over 2,000 man hours have been spent on top of the standard build to create MATCH 2 yacht, which features almost 400 custom items.

The project, which will be the owner’s fifth Fairline, was born out of his in-depth knowledge and passion for the luxury range. The Yacht Division, Design, Engineering and Production teams have worked tirelessly to ensure the owner’s requirements were met and Fairline’s high standards were maintained – creating a beautiful bespoke motor yacht that is set to be a key highlight at the Swanwick event.

James Powell, Fairline Yacht Division EMEA, commented: “The creation of this Squadron 78 CUSTOM has been a real pleasure, and the entire team are really proud of what has been achieved. It has been great working with the client from the initial stages to define the specification through to completion of construction – his intimate knowledge of the brand and technical and engineering background tested the limits of the level of customisation that could be achieved by the Fairline Yacht Division. Following successful commissioning of all of the custom items, sea trials at our Ipswich Test Facility, and feedback from the client, MATCH 2 is a real testament to the Design, Engineering and Production teams at Fairline.”

The project started with an initial Custom Specification Concept Pack detailing the exact requirements for all main areas of the boat, including the hull, deck and superstructure, engineering and systems and accommodation. The Fairline team then turned these concepts into reality, with the build commencing in August 2012 before being completed on-time in May 2013 and delivered to the Fairline Test Facility at Ipswich for sea trials and commissioning. Luxury yacht MATCH 2 will be handed over to its owner immediately after the inaugural British Motor Yacht Show, before sailing to her final destination in Antibes, South of France.

John Wolf, owner of MATCH 2, commented: “I bought my fourth Fairline, a new Squadron 78 CUSTOM in 2010, and enjoyed a couple of seasons of great cruising with family and friends in the Mediterranean. The boat was perfect and never missed a beat, and it held its value so well that it made good financial sense to sell it last year. I’m aware of the many good alternative boats that could have replaced it but chose to buy another Squadron 78 CUSTOM.

“This decision was a combination of my great experience with the Squadron, the teams at the Fairline factory and Fairline Essex, being able to specify many custom modifications, and being guaranteed great sea-keeping, strong residual value, and great build quality. All of this made the idea of another Squadron 78 CUSTOM unbeatable.

“I am absolutely delighted with the finished boat and looking forward eagerly to delivery.  I hope many other boaters will be able to step aboard her at the British Motor Yacht Show and see for themselves the extraordinary levels Fairline has reached with this boat.”

Below are just some of the custom items on board motor yacht MATCH 2:
•    Additional hull glazing
•    Custom stainless steel staircase to flybridge with teak treads and mood lighting
•    White caulking to teak decks
•    All timber in Satin Walnut with high gloss lacquered Wenge features

A very successful Palma International Boat Show 2013

May 07, 2013

Having closed its doors on Sunday, May 5, the 30th edition of the Palma International Boat Show hosted an impressive number of around 37,000 visitors. Amongst them was the King’s only son, Crown Prince Felipe, the first time in 30 years that a member of the Spanish royal family has attended.

Palma International Boat Show 2013

A keen sailor, even competing in the 1992 Olympics as part of the Spanish sailing team, Crown Prince Felipe paid a surprise visit to the Show to present the Marcial Sanchez-Barcaiztegui Award, the first of its kind to recognise those who promote sailing. Sanchez-Barcaiztegui was one of the most respected and loved personalities in the sailing world and played a fundamental role in the promotion of the sport throughout Spain.  Having paid tribute, Prince Felipe spent more than an hour walking around the Boat Show, greeting both exhibitors and the public.

Director of the Palma International Boat Show, Chema Sans, was delighted at the event’s success, “This was a completely different Show from 2011. Most notably, it has grown a lot, the number of exhibitors was up 25% and the sea-based exhibition area up 76%, largely due to the crucial addition of a Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show – a venture that makes a good deal of sense for the Balearics.  Last year Monaco reported a record attendance of 33,000, we know for sure that we have beaten this figure and certainly had many more sailing superyachts on display. In total 47 superyachts over 24 metres lined the quayside of Moll Vell marina and, based on this year’s runaway success, I envisage this expanding to 65 or more for 2014.”

Chema continued, “All the exhibitors I have spoken with seemed to be happy having gathered quality contacts and conducted serious business. Those promoting smaller craft may not have sold ten boats at the Show, as could have been the case a decade ago, but have had their expectations exceeded considering the difficult economic environment. Many are already thinking about next year, discussing their stand and berthing requirements. And, with the all-new eight million euro Moll Vell due to be complete and open for business by spring 2014, the Show can only build in importance and quality.”

For the 30th edition, public and private sector worked together to remodel the Show into a nautical week with TapaMar gastronomy, the Gaastra PalmaVela regatta and Maremostra Ocean Film Festival running alongside the more traditional boats, accessories and services. The intention was to promote the Islands, in particular Palma, and confirm their strategic importance in tourism and yachting – giving impetus to the economy and job creation.

Speaking exclusively to nautical channel NTVE.TV, Jose Ramon Bauza, President of the Balearic Islands who declared the Show open on 1 May, said, “It is absolutely necessary for our economy, because now we want to improve our economy, we want to give opportunity for unemployed people and we want to be very proud of our industry in this nautical sector because they say we are the best all over the world.”

Quotes from exhibitors:

Paul Allan, Portbooker: “This is the Show that Palma has been missing.  The Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show in particular has given us a great platform to launch our brand new 40 metre plus website, and we’ve generated keen interest from marina partners and end-users over the past five days. We’re a global business but with strong local representation in the Balearics and we recognise these Islands as the leading nautical destination in the Med.”

Jimmy Blackburn, Fairline South Mallorca: “The weather has been fantastic and Mallorca is a great place for our customers to come and see us – a touch point to build relationships. We’ve gathered good leads, via previously known customers and new business, and it’s brilliant that we’ve been allowed to bring both new and used boats to the Show, priced between 200,000 and 1.4 million pounds.  We will return in 2014.”

Stuart Bray, Bray Marine International: “At long last they’ve got it right. We’ve had a very productive five days, busy with customers.  We will be back next year.”

Jamie Collins, Oyster Yachts: “Compared with 2011, the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show has brought a new dimension to the Palma International Boat Show. Inter-broker cooperation is key to business existence on the Island and it has worked well. Footfall has been impressive, aided I am sure by three non-working days, a bank holiday and the weekend. Our Oyster 100 superyacht Penelope has been received well on her debut and it has been nice to see yachts of a similar size and usability alongside her. A large mix of nationalities from Russian to British, German to Italian, have come on board for a viewing and all been impressed. We’re very pleased and keen to participate again next year.”

Peter Franklin, The Islander magazine and NTVE.TV: “We were thrilled to have been awarded a contract by Show organisers to handle international promotion of the event. To then see it become such a great success has delighted the whole team. Part of our contract was to provide internet-based and local terrestrial TV coverage of the whole Show. To focus our programming we awarded ten ‘Captains Lounge Best in Show’ prizes which included six yachts across the size range – motor and sail – now viewable on our website. We look forward to being involved in an even bigger Palma International Boat Show in 2014.”

Marc Kelly, Palma Refit: “The revamped Show has been well received and feedback positive. Without the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show we would not be here, as superyachts are our main target market, and in my opinion it’s been a long time coming. Not only have we been able to network and generate leads, but we’ve also been able to reinforce our image in the marketplace. We will be back next year.”

Salvador Sancho, Marina Estrella: “With last year’s Show postponed, it gave the event the opportunity to start again with a new format and of course the new agreement with the Superyacht Brokerage & Charter Show. Overall this has brought more international clients to the Show, many of them serious boat buyers. We have sold our motor yacht Azimut 88 to a Portuguese client who travelled from Vilamoura, our Minorchino 42 to a British client who will berth her in Torrevieja, a Hanse 415 to another British client, an Azimut 55S to its new owner in Cascais and finally a Cobalt 242. Many enquiries also came for the Hanse 630 and 575.  Not bad given we were expecting a quiet Show.  The emphasis was on quality rather than quantity which was a blessing as it allowed our sales team to invest time in their clients and conduct sea trials without being under pressure.  Next year we will certainly return, with at least ten boats, and feel positive that we are with the best yachts and businesses that Palma has to offer.”

Singapore Yacht Show 2013 a Huge Success

May 06, 2013

This year’s Singapore Yacht Show (SYS) has been a great success, being declared as Asia’s most important yachting as well as boating industry event.

Singapore Yacht Show 2013

Singapore Yacht Show 2013

Managing director of organisers Singapore Yacht Events, Andy Treadwell, said the feedback from exhibitors, partners and those who attended the show was incredibly positive, and he was looking forward to an even more spectacular 2014 event. “Everybody who participated is saying that the number and quality of visitors at this year’s show was way beyond their expectations. They all seem to have had significant leads, and significant sales. They all agree that the ONE°15 Marina Club here in Sentosa Cove is the perfect venue for a regional show, and Singapore is the ideal business hub for the future of yachting and boating in Asia,” Mr Treadwell said.

Neil Hornsby, director of Burgess said: “It was incredibly well organised and attracted just the right calibre of clientele, so we were delighted, as indeed were the owners of sailing yacht Twizzle.”

This year’s event attracted more than double the number of last year’s exhibitors, including a significantly wider selection of vessels in the 30ft – 80ft category.

Exhibiting for the first time was Sunseeker Asia, one of the most popular brands worldwide, and represented in Singapore by Daniel Au, who commented: “Sunseeker is absolutely delighted with the outcome of SYS 2013. It is now by far the best show in Asia, with seriously promising results for us – especially in the superyacht range. We are working on several contracts with new clients who we met during the show – and we are confident that most of them will be finalised! The presence of Sunseeker in Singapore is now firmly established, and the success of the Singapore Yacht Show 2013 is a bold testament to the fast developing boating industry in this region.”

Meanwhile Nigel Beatty of Super Yacht Logistics, who attended both the Asia Pacific Superyacht Conference and Yacht Show said: “I was blown away as to how beneficial [the conference] is and I am definitely coming back next year […] the show has been excellent, absolutely excellent. [It] is exceptional… not as big as the Monaco Yacht Show or the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, but it is a high quality show. There is a lot of quality here and that’s what counts.”

The event’s registration provider Go Gorilla recorded over 8,000 visitors to ONE°15 Marina Club over the four days of the show – nearly double last year’s ticketed entries – and a record 11,000 people registered their interest in the show online before and during the event.

Mr Treadwell said he and his team were taking exhibitor feedback on board and were looking forward to increasing, and maximising the on-water display area next year, as per their requests.

SYS 2013 a Huge Success

SYS 2013 a Huge Success

What the industry is saying
Tom Richardson, of Fairline Boats said: “As well as a superb opportunity to display our yachts to hundreds of visitors, we also secured a number of new sales at the show.  The Singapore Yacht Show delivered good footfall and more importantly a large number of quality High Net Worth and Ultra High Net Worth visitors. The event has certainly proved itself to be one of the leading shows across the Asia-Pacific region. We look forward to attending the show again in 2014 and hopefully achieving an even greater success.”

MaryAnne Edwards, CEO of Superyacht Australia thanked managing director of Singapore Yacht Events, Andy Treadwell, for delivering a yachting and boating event “that has all ingredients to be the stand out show for the superyacht sector in the Asian region”.

She said she was impressed by his dedication over the past few years to ensure this event succeeded and grew into an event that would service the needs of the region and be a showcase for how it should be done. “I will certainly be recommending to our superyacht members that they look to participate in the conference and the show next year.”

On the second day of the show, Mark Cavendish, sales director at Heesen Yachts said: “Today I literally just walked on the stand and there was a gentleman from Jakarta who has a 36 metre motor yacht and he was interested in our 40 metre yacht. What more can you ask for.”

“We are very keen to develop the Asian market, because I don’t know how much business there will be in Europe in the next 5 to 10 years,” he added.

Eric Koh of SG Boating added: “Thank you and your tireless crew for putting up a great show and making this a wonderful platform for SG Boating. Great job! Book us for next year!”

34,822 people from 51 countries attended this year’s show. For the show, the BMF had specifically produced its Excellence Guide in Mandarin which promotes BMF members and British Marine Industry Craftsmanship, Innovation and Design.

The eight companies were a mix of products and services that included BMT, Complete Marine Freight, Jeremy Rogers Ltd, Marina Projects, Oceanair, Oceanstyle by Burgess, Spinlock and Wilks.

UK boatbuilders were well represented at the show with Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline all taking noticeable presence. Other UK companies that were also promoting themselves included RS Sailing and Bill Dixon.

Jeremy Rowles, Spinlock Ltd, commented
, “We certainly received some interest in products from the end user but also Spinlock now has an approximate idea of what will be required, and when, to support the fledgling domestic leisure marine market. Attendance by our Chinese export builders was also good. It was an all round useful trip which would have been costly to achieve any other way”.

Jeff Houlgrave, Marina Projects, feedback, “Marina Projects presence at the show was a success enhanced by the hard work and efforts made by the BMF. It was a pleasure to be there with the others companies and this teamwork clearly shows what is possible when we work together. The translators were essential and enabled clear communication with the visitors. Marina Projects has some  interesting leads from the show and are already working with some the contacts we made.”

Cabo Marine Show 2013, May 1 – 4

March 29, 2013

For the last 4 years, Cabo Marine Show has been annually hosted by the IGY Marina in Cabo San Lucas, situated in the lovely yacht charter destination – Mexico. The 2013 event will take place from May 1 to 4, expecting to draw over 4,000 visitors from mainland Mexico, the US as well as Canada to explore the best nautical and marine industry products and services that Mexico has to offer.

CABO

There are many reasons as to why projections have visitor numbers increase more than double since the Show’s debut four years ago. In 2012, the dates were modified to accommodate the G20 Summit held in Los Cabos, pushing the event back to the first week of July. In addition, the economy has drastically improved compared to 2011 and 2012 in Los Cabos. Lastly, the safety and security found in the destination is unparalleled and people have come to understand this fact.

Sergio Igartua, Founder of the Cabo Marine Show explains more about this year’s high expectations, “For the 2013 event, we are expecting more than 1,000 visitors per day during our new four-day event program. We also will have up to 50 industry exhibitors ranging from yacht brokers to marine industry brands and makes such as Azimut, Bertram, Beneteau, Fairline, Sea-Doo, Suzuki and Mercury Marine, among others such as the privately owned charter yacht Spirit of Two Thousand & Ten.”

Spirit of Two Thousand and Ten - Cruising

Spirit of Two Thousand and Ten - Cruising

Oscar Avalos, Director of MAA+Eventos, the Mexico City based events management company in charge of this year’s Cabo Marine Show, is excited about this year’s event. “Some of the major differences between last year’s event and this year are the dates. We are moving the event to earlier in the year in lieu of better weather that will guarantee a greater number of visitors. Plus, the selected dates are considered a domestic “puente” (holiday weekend),” said Oscar.

“The format of the show does carry good change too. This year will be a four-day event when in the past the event ran for three days. Lastly, we have chosen an afternoon-only schedule with event hours from 5pm-10pm daily.”

The Cabo Marine Show is much more than a nautical event. It is about creating a network between exhibitors and local business owners as well. The show features more than 50 local, national and international companies with dozens of the newest boats, gadgets, engines, marine gear and accessories.

Another new aspect to the 4th Annual Cabo Marine Show is the hiring of Synergy, a Mexico-based Marketing and PR agency. Seth Romans, Owner of Synergy says, “Last year was an extremely successful event in many ways. Not only was it a great way to connect to other exhibitors, I actually sold a boat. This year, my company expects to help generate more awareness through our international partners while working with the local community, resorts, hotels and business owners to make the 2013 event the most successful to date.”

The Cabo Marine Show is unique in the sense that it offers live entertainment nightly, with local musicians playing for the public. With a superior location on the marina waterfront, access to the top restaurants and hottest bars is another perk. Today, it is the only boat show in Mexico that offers an open-air, in-water setting with free admission to the general public in the heart of the downtown area in Cabo San Lucas.
