Double award-winning triumph for Holland Jachtbouw 42m Calliope Superyacht

November 28, 2011

Holland Jachbouw 42m motor yacht Calliope has now received not one but two major industry motoryacht awards in her class. Having already won a prestigious Neptune Trophy for the best planing motoryacht in 2011 World Superyacht Awards, the stunning Calliope superyacht has recently received the prominent Showboats Exterior Design & Styling Award for a semi-displacement motoryacht.

“This is a remarkable achievement for any superyacht,” comments Tako van Ineveld, Commercial Director at Holland Jachtbouw. “But it is surely unique that a yard like Holland Jachtbouw – which has made its name for creating famous sail yachts like charter yacht Windrose of Amsterdam and Athos yacht – could beat all the dedicated powerboat yards to win these two awards. Moreover, Calliope is only our second motoryacht, which speaks volumes for the way we have been able to incorporate sailing yacht standards of finish and fine detailing into the fully custom powerboat environment.”

The luxury yacht Calliope’s double award winning performance is also a testimony to her owner’s dedication to perfection and the exquisite design by Bill Langan and Rhoades Young Design. ” Calliope has been dubbed ‘the ultimate Gentlemen’s yacht’ and I think this is a fair assessment,” Van Ineveld continues. ” She is by no means a typical motoryacht in terms of her colour or shaping, and has a very distinctive look. The fabulous interior is also a key reason why our industry peers have been so impressed with this fascinating project.”

These are busy times at Holland Jachtbouw. The build of the awesome new J-Class sailing yacht Rainbow is now at an advanced stage as the yard gears up for the 2012 regattas in and around Cowes. Construction also recently got underway on another magnificent sailing yacht, a 45m high performance sloop from the boards of Dixon Yacht Design. And the yard’s success with motoryachts will continue, having just signed the contact for an extensive interior refit of the 42m motor yacht Life SAGA.

2011 DAME Design Award METS nominees announced

October 21, 2011

43 products, from a total of 133, have been chosen for final judging by the prominent 2011 DAME Design Award METS competition´s jury who will eventually choose a maximum of eight category winners and one overall winner.

METS logo

The DAME Design Award competition is held every year in conjunction with METS incorporating the SuperYacht Pavilion and this year it received entries from 21 countries, with the nominees coming from 10 nations. The overall and category winners will be announced at a special Breakfast Briefing on Tuesday November 15th at 8 a.m. prior to the start of the METS show that same day. During METS, all of the short listed products will be put on display in a special DAME presentation located in the RAI Elicium.

Chairman of the DAME Award’s Jury, Bill Dixon, says he is delighted with the quality of this year’s entries. “The 2011 DAME Design Award entry list is one of the best we’ve seen in years and it has been a real challenge trying to decide which products should be nominated for final judging. Each category has had its fair share of diverse and well-executed ideas, and the judges’ favourites have ranged from simple gadgets to highly engineered machinery. Although manufacturers are clearly very price conscious during these difficult economic times, it’s great to see that the marine industry is just as inspired and creative as ever. Choosing the eventual overall winner is certainly going to be tough.”

The Overall Winner
The overall winner of the DAME Awards will be announced at the ICOMIA-METS Breakfast Briefing held in the Forum of Amsterdam RAI before the official opening of the show. The Award presented to the overall winner has been designed by Naval Architect Tony Castro, former chairman of the DAME Jury, and is intended to reflect the international nature of the competition.

DAME categories
Each entry is carefully assessed by the DAME Jury who consider several important criteria, including overall design, build quality, functionality, and use of materials. Other factors taken into account are originality, ergonomics and price/quality ratio. The short listed products are divided into eight categories:

1.         Marine electronics
2.         Interior equipment, furnishings, materials, and electrical fittings used in cabins
3.         Marina equipment, boatyard equipment, and boat construction tools and materials
4.         Deck equipment, sails, and rigging
5.         Clothing and crew accessories
6.         Lifesaving and safety equipment
7.         Machinery, propulsion, mechanical, and electrical systems and fittings
8.         Marine related software

The Jury can also — at its discretion — present special certificates for ‘Most ECO-Friendly Product’ and ‘Most Innovative Product’. Other products that are exceptional, but which do not win the award in their category, may be given a Special Mention.

DAME JURY 2011
This year’s DAME Jury is made up of ten leading industry experts:
• Mr. B. Dixon, Dixon Yacht Design, United Kingdom – Chairman of the DAME Jury
• Mr. G. den Boef, The Netherlands – Secretary of the DAME Jury
• Ms. M. Bos-De Vaal, Art-Line Interiors B.V., The Netherlands
• Mr. T. Conradi, judel/vrolijk & co engineering GmbH, President DBSV, Germany

New sailing yacht MANTIS 80 by Dixon Yacht Design and Ken Freivokh Design

September 23, 2011

One of the latest and perhaps one of the most elegant designs unveiled at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show to date is the new sailing yacht MANTIS 80 created by two prestigious design studios. Super Yacht Mantis 80 features sleek, gracious lines thanks to her naval architecture and external styling by Dixon Yacht Design as well as sophisticated and elegant interior by Ken Freivohk Design.

The original concept, which has been registered by Dixon Yacht Design and has been brilliantly achieved, was to design a flybridge performance mega yacht with the flybridge deck integrated into the hull line. The result is MANTIS 80 – a very stylish 80 metre vessel with wonderfully clean lines, which not only looks exceptional, but will be extremely comfortable to live on and deliver outstanding performance.

Constructed of aluminium, the Mantis 80 yacht’s long waterline and slim easily driven hull, will be propelled by a powerful ketch rig. Dixon Yacht Design’s considerable experience of designing lifting keel for large superyachts will ensure the one fitted to the Mantis 80 superyacht will optimise stability and weight while in no way intruding into the vessels accommodation.

The excellence of the naval architecture and exterior styling is matched by creativity and innovation displayed by Ken Freivokh Design. The interior design of the new ‘MANTIS 80′ yacht perfectly complements that of the exterior, with considerable emphasis being placed in the continuity of line and the integration of spaces. The custom built interior is beautiful but lightweight, so as to have negligible effect on the performance of this no compromise blue water yacht. The sailing yacht Mantis 80 will be as much at home undertaking ocean crossings as it will at superyacht regattas; all the time, and whatever the occasion, providing a marvellous on board environment.

Individually Ken Freivokh Design and Dixon Yacht Design produce outstanding work but their collaboration on the ‘Mantis 80′ shows that two brilliant teams, working together as one, can create something only seen extremely rarely. The superyacht ‘MANTIS 80′ is a very special vessel.

Since entering the superyacht arena in 2005, Peri Yachts have gone from strength to strength. The yachts, typified by their sleek racy lines and dramatically spacious decks and interiors, combined with a fanatical attention to detail, express sophisticated modern luxury. Despite their low-lying, aerodynamic lines, Peri’s high-tech composite superyachts are used to enjoying a high profile at Cannes. Peri has already twice carried off the prestigious “World Yacht Trophies” award for “Best interior decoration for flybridge yachts over 24 metres”, for its 29 metre and 37 metre models in previous years.

The 41T superyacht was conceived by a formidable team. Scaro Design, Istanbul’s award-winning design group, created her external lines and her interior, while the UK’s renowned Dixon Yacht Design engineered her V planing hull. The 41T is powered by twin MTU 12V4000 M93L 3,450hp engines to reach a top speed of 23 knots and has a range of 1,250 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 17 knots.

Meanwhile, the Peri shipyard in Antalya has never been busier. There are five of the company’s high-performance, composite superyachts under construction: the second Peri 41T yacht, sistership of the award winning Peri 41T superyacht Bibich Too, will be finished by next year, as will three new examples of the 29-metre, the award-winning entry-level line. Furthermore, the latest 37-metre, also an award-winner and darling of the Côte d’Azur, has just been completed and is offered for sale.

Feature Superyacht: 30m Sailing yacht Antares III by Yachting Developments

August 15, 2011

Sailing Yacht Antares III is a 30m (98ft) custom built composite performance cruising sloop from the design board of Dixon Yacht Design. Built by Yachting Developments to meet and exceed strict Germanischer Lloyd and MCA classification survey requirements, the vessel is incredibly strong yet 25-30% lighter than similar vessels built in Aluminium. The composite structure is post cured epoxy Eglass/Carbon/Kevlar incorporating high strength foam sandwich technology. The hull has a Kevlar outer skin, for increased impact resistance.

The owners design brief was to scale down the owner’s previous 40m yacht also designed by Bill Dixon which the owner felt to be to be a little too impersonal as it required a large a crew.

S/Y Antares III is well equipped, designed to cruise the world in comfort and be self sufficient for extended periods of time. Lithium Ion batteries and efficient onboard systems provide extended silent ship mode for the vessel when sailing or at anchor in a quiet bay.

Antares III was constructed in less than 400 days, unprecedented for a custom vessel of this size and level of quality. The owner considered potential shipyards internationally, but the decision to award the build contract to Yachting Developments was made partly due the limited choice in high quality composite shipyards with experience in building vessels of this type and limitations on who would be able to deliver superyacht Antares III to the highest of quality within the short build time frame.

Ian Cook, Yachting Developments Managing Director, flew to Europe to meet with the owner, the meeting was successful and resulted in the contract being negotiated and signed on the same day. Ian returned to the shipyard bearing news that Yachting Developments would be commencing build in 2010. Given the state of the economy at that time, it was the perfect way to end the year and send the staff off on their annual summer vacation knowing that when they returned in 2010 it would be full steam ahead on the project. While this short build time is not the norm, Ian Cook and his team thrived on the challenge and with the expertise and knowledge within his staff it’s not a challenge they are likely to turn down in the future.

The owner visited the project and took the opportunity to enjoy the nature and beauty of New Zealand on three occasions. For Patrick Yeoward, the Owners Representative, this was the third new build with this owner, so he knew him well enough to be able to make decisions quickly on his behalf.

When yacht Antares III was launched, the weather was not too forgiving and strong winds and rain were not ideal, but she was launched smoothly and on time.

Patrick Yeoward, Owners Representative, describes the launch “They say that things run like a Swiss watch, well that will have to be rephrased to a Yachting Developments launch… The rig was stepped, on time. The boom loaded, on time. And moored up, on time. All involved from the Owners side would like to congratulate Ian Cook and his team at Yachting Developments for a job that was most certainly well done.”

Design comment: Bill Dixon, Dixon Yacht Design

“Comfort and performance in equal measure were the requirements of the owner of the 30m Antares III project; an owner for whom we have already designed two yachts for. Antares III is a powerful yacht but capable of being sailed with a relatively small crew. Composite construction keeps weight down and allows us to fully exploit additional interior volume in crucial areas of the accommodation. Weight considerations have also affected the choice of rig, and the carbon rig and rigging, as well as obviously reducing weight aloft, will also increase stability.”

Comfort starts on deck, which is designed to have different socialising areas, with aft deck seating, the guest cockpit itself, and additional informal seating forward in the foredeck tender recess. The interior layout focuses very much on the split level pilothouse, a focus point of the design; the aft windows and door fold away to give a cohesive indoor / outdoor living space with the guest cockpit. A carefully thought out living plan is essential on any yacht, and on the Antares III yacht the pilothouse configuration allows the integration of a ‘serious’ engine room, with full standing headroom, making maintenance both efficient and convenient.

Interior comment: Jonathan Rhoades, Rhoades Young Design

The challenge for Rhoades Young was to create a clean and contemporary interior, whilst trying to avoid the usual trappings of modern styled yachts. We combined modern furniture detailing and strong formal architectural symmetries with warm traditional woods and careful upholstery detailing” says Jonathan Rhoades.

INTERIOR
The horizontal grained blond teak interior designed by Rhoades Young Design was manufactured in-house by Yachting Developments specialist tradesmen. Muted tones and colours keep the interior calm, quiet and elegant.

UPPER SALOON
The pilothouse upper saloon is spacious, light, and airy. A raised settee and table to port allows all round vision while seated. Large opening pilothouse windows aft allow interaction with guests and helmsman in the cockpit area. The navigation area and bar are located to starboard.

GUEST CABINS
The guest accommodation is located aft on either side of the central companionway leading aft to the master cabin. The starboard guest cabin features a double queen berth. The port guest cabin features twin berths with a concealed optional third Pullman berth. The two guest cabins each have generous ensuites, the port guest ensuite also acts as a day head.

CREW ACCOMMODATION
The crew area is built to the same high standard of finish as the rest of the vessel with the addition of industrial synthetic flooring. The captain’s cabin is to starboard, the crew twin berth cabin is to port, and both have generous ensuites and overhead storage.

SAILING
The sailing yacht Antares III sports a state of the art keel stepped carbon fibre mast, carbon fibre furling boom and carbon fibre standing rigging, all geared around enhanced sailing performance. The mainsheet is attached to an arch aft keeping the mainsheet clear of the passengers and crew.
The sails and mast were custom built in New Zealand. The generous sail plan gives an upwind area of 453m2 and a downwind of 800m2. The owner and crew were extremely happy with the vessels performance. Under power Antares III cruises at 11 knots with a motoring range of 3,600nm at this speed.

ENGINE ROOM
The engine room is impressive; it features full headroom and is located under the pilothouse. The engine room can be accessed from the port side deck and internal access is via a watertight door to starboard of the aft companionway. Access to the pump room forward is via a forward watertight door.

PUMP ROOM
The well presented pump room is located under the lower saloon. The pump room houses main halyard and mainsheet captive winches, water purification units and pumps. Access is via the Engine room and crew area.

GENERAL
“Antares III has been a very enjoyable project to work on, the team here at Yachting Developments thrived on the challenge. To build such a high quality custom Superyacht in the timeframe requested by the client is remarkable” says Ian Cook, “during the construction period only 3 full weekends of overtime were required, and we still shut down for three weeks over the Christmas/Summer vacation period. It was made possible by the combined team effort of Yachting Developments staff and management. It is a great boat, and I know the owner and crew will enjoy it as much as we enjoyed building it”

The Peri 29 yacht Ozone’s large exterior and interior space express a new kind of luxury – smooth, uncluttered and very seductive. New dimensions open up, from the broad, teak-clad outer decks, to the generous fly-bridge, with its privileged views of the sea. The generous interior envelops you in pearl grey leather, pale floors and sophisticated lighting.
