Hakvoort launch motor yacht Apostrophe (YN247)

April 15, 2013

Luxury yacht builder Hakvoort Shipyard has announced the launch of the motor yacht Apostrophe (YN247), boasting elegant exterior lines from the well known Reymond Langton Design Ltd. studio, also responsible for the vessels contemporary Art Deco interior. Superyacht Apostrophe features naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design in addition to the Owner’s determination to construct the finest Hakvoort to date; she is the testimony to how magnificent things can be achieved when people truly collaborate together.

A Russian Orthodox priest blessed Apostrophe yacht on Saturday 13 April 2013 in a ceremony at the Hakvoort yard, which was attended by the owner, his guests and the craftsmen responsible for her construction. A new client for Hakvoort with a rich experience in boat ownership, the owner decided to make the step up to a fully custom superyacht of premium Dutch quality. At the keel laying ceremony three years ago he had described the project as his ‘baby’ and pledged to push himself to the limit make this one of the best vessels afloat.

“He was certainly true to his word,” explains project manager Alexander Speksnijder. “Every suggestion made by the interior and exterior architects was accepted regardless of cost, and there have been no compromises in any area of the boat. Looking back at the early renderings of the exterior colour scheme and the glass art aspects of the interior, it is extraordinary how Apostrophe has turned out to be everything the owner intended.”

During the launch ceremony, both the yard and the owner spoke openly about how the project had required everyone to pull together in a tough economic climate. “When we first signed the contract for Apostrophe five years ago we were living in a very different world,” said Klaas Hakvoort, co-director of the family run shipyard that bears his name. “Soon afterwards the recession began to bite and the usually cooperative banks refused to finance the construction. The owner’s business was also facing challenges and, together with the brokers Moran Yacht and Ship, whose contribution has been way beyond the norm, we came up with a unique solution. The fact that Apostrophe has already so successfully battled her first storm makes us all the more proud that she is one of the finest yachts ever launched by Hakvoort.”

The modern design by Reymond Langton features coloured tones, black windows and a striking grey hull, with contrast being offered by the gleaming white superstructure. A wealth of complex shapes in the profile combine with long-running lines from bow to stern to create a unique look. The curved windows in the owner’s area on the main deck are very special and mirrored in the sky lounge above. Taken as a whole, all these aspects make luxury yacht Apostrophe look significantly longer than 40 metres.

The contemporary art deco interior features ebonised walnut and makassar joinery with lots of mother-of-pearl inlays, plus a wealth of fine detailing in stainless steel, brushed nickel and leather. Superyacht Apostrophe’s main entrance is extraordinary – an open stairwell with a custom designed chandelier from Crystal Caviar. The latter company also supplied various artworks, including a glass piece in the bathroom with curved backlit panels and underwater motifs.

The full beam master stateroom on the main deck includes a fabulous bathroom furthest forward completely finished in Onyx marble. The stateroom itself has panoramic views through the curved windows and the owner’s area also includes a walk-in dressing room and office. Four guest suites on the lower deck each have their own individual style including in the bathrooms, reflecting the vast range of materials and fabrics used throughout the boat.

Apostrophe confirms that there is no limit to what Hakvoort can create,” concludes project manager Alexander Speksnijder. “Despite the incredible complexity of both the exterior shaping and the interior décor, this sophisticated and challenging project has been finished to perfection.”

Hakvoort takes order for largest yacht to date – 63 m motor yacht ZEUS (YN249)

February 08, 2013

The prominent Dutch builder, Hakvoort Shipyard, has signed the contract to construct the 63-metre motor yacht Zeus (YN249). Project Zeus superyacht will represent the largest luxury vessel built to date by Hakvoort, which also recently started the construction of the 61 m displacement motor yacht Golden Age (YN248).

63 m luxury superyacht ZEUS (YN249) by Hakvoort

63 m luxury superyacht ZEUS (YN249) by Hakvoort and Rene van der Velden

Slated for delivery in the spring of 2017, Hakvoort YN249 yacht Zeus has a unique contemporary profile designed by René van der Velden to some very specific requirements from the owner. Diana Yacht Design is responsible for the naval architecture and the interior will come from the boards of Sinot Yacht Design.

This second major new order for Hakvoort within the space of a few months justifies the significant investments the yard has made in recent years to expand its facilities. Luxury yacht Zeus will require a further extension of the yard, cementing Hakvoort’s position in the market for premium motoryachts up to 65 metres in length.

The owner of superyacht Zeus has a longstanding relationship with René van der Velden and asked him to draw a modern classic with a difference. “He was very keen that the yacht should not be a repeat of anything else that is currently afloat but something genuinely fresh and bold,” explains Van der Velden. “The owner admires a type of styling called streamlining, which was especially popular in the 1930s and 40s. A streamliner is a vehicle or vessel given a specific shape that reduces air resistance: Examples include the famous ferry Kalakala and the record-breaking car Bluebird. This is the first time streamlining has been so clearly integrated into the design of a superyacht.”

63 m Hakvoort mega yacht ZEUS (YN249)

63 m Hakvoort mega yacht ZEUS (YN249)

A crucial part of the layout brief was the location of the tenders. “The owner has a lot of experience and knows how difficult large tenders can be to launch,” Van der Velden continues. “Seeking a very practical solution we chose to place two nine-metre tenders on the main deck. As this eats into a lot of prime real estate, we have skipped the traditional saloon, dedicating the main deck to the owner’s quarters, galley and captain’s cabin. This has freed space on the deck above for pure socialising.”

This ‘upper deck’ includes a spacious saloon forward and sky lounge aft. The latter has sliding doors that open up to create a giant inside-out zone. The bridge deck includes the wheelhouse and a large area is set aside for the gymnasium. This too can be opened up for the ultimate in al fresco fitness. Mega yacht Zeus also features a beach club with lots of storage and a sauna. Twin Caterpillar 3512Cs will give her a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 12.5 knots.

Established in 1919 in the picturesque port of Monnickendam, just north of Amsterdam, Hakvoort is one of the world’s last genuinely family-owned yachtbuilders. Over the decades, many of its yachts have been nominated for major awards, including Lady Marina (1994), Freesia (1998), motor yacht Spada (1999), superyacht Solaia (2000), Campbell Bay (2002), Saga (2002), Tigre D’or (2004) Perle Bleue (2007), charter yacht My Trust (2008), charter yacht SnowbirD (2011) and luxury yacht Pamela V (2011), with seven being outright winners in their class. Zeus, Golden Age and various other projects ensure that the future is equally bright for this renowned yard.
