World’s Largest Sailing Catamaran Hemisphere engineered by BMT Nigel Gee

September 22, 2011

BMT Nigel Gee, a subsidiary of the BMT Group, is pleased to announce its association with sailing yacht Hemisphere, the 44m VPLP design catamaran recently launched from Pendennis Shipyard, making her world debut at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show. Luxury catamaran HEMISPHERE is the largest sailing catamaran in the world measuring 44m (145ft). Her huge size and quality build make her incredibly spacious and luxurious. The Hemisphere yacht can sail or motor at high speeds and being a catamaran she is also very stable at sea. S/Y HEMISPHERE has 8 crew and can accommodate up to 12 charter guests in luxury in 4 double and 1 twin cabin.

BMT Nigel Gee was initially contracted to undertake full structural design and analysis of the superyacht Hemisphere by direct calculation. Definition of global load cases and subsequent analysis was undertaken with extensive use of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) used to analyse both stress and deflection from both global loads and high localised loads at the mast base and rig attachments.

The structural design and engineering of the charter yacht Hemisphere have pushed the boundaries of classification society rules.  BMT worked closely with the vessel’s classification society during the development of a new set of rules for the structural design of vessels of this type and size which subsequently became BV Yacht Rules.

BMT delivered a full Class Level Design, ultimately leading to provision of a comprehensive detailed production engineering package. Utilising ARL ShipConstructor for the development of the structure and pipe work systems, BMT provided full CNC cutting files and pipe spools as well as extensive engineering for the yachts complex outfit items.

Part of BMT Nigel Gee’s detailed design contract was to provide weight guarantees for the structure of the yacht. On the completion of each structural unit, weighed weights were returned from the yard and compared with both the early engineering estimates which formed the basis of the guarantee, and the detailed 3d structural production model from which the CNC cut parts were developed. These figures have shown that the yachts structure was delivered 6% below the contracted structural weight estimate.

James Roy, Yacht Design Director at BMT Nigel Gee comments, “It has been a real pleasure to work on Hemisphere and the tenacity of her skipper Gavin Bladen is highly commendable. Through this project we have developed further our relationship with the VPLP office and collaborated on even larger ground breaking designs for sailing catamarans up to nearly 80m.”

BMT Nigel Gee has designed and engineered some of the world’s largest and most complex catamarans, including the 80m Sea Fighter for the US Navy, a 55 knots Gas Turbine powered naval vessel.

July 25, 2011

Sailing catamaran Hemisphere, the yachting world’s most eagerly awaited superyacht, has recently been launched by the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth and is undergoing sea trials and final completion works before exhibiting at the Monaco Yacht Show 2011 in September. Luxury superyacht builder Pendennis built the yacht Hemisphere that features naval architecture by the leading multihull architects Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) who designed the 33rd America’s Cup winning multihull. Celebrated superyacht interior designers Michael Leach Design completed the luxury catamaran Hemispheres’ interior. The result is an innovative design brimming with creatively practical features that blend speed and stability with both space and style to encompass the pure essence of innovation in the multihull market.

With a draft of just over 3m (9.8ft), the Hemisphere yacht boasts an ease of manoeuvrability and the scope to cruise shallow draft destinations inaccessible to monohulls of comparable size which is great news for luxury yacht charter guests being able to anchor close to secluded bays and beaches.

Hemisphere’s decks and rig are remarkably uncluttered as visible deck hardware has been minimised and the 58m (190ft) high mast soars free of spreaders with all lines run internally. Tenders are also stowed out of sight and the port transom houses a full watersports and dive locker served by a large hydraulic swim platform.

Destined for the luxury charter market in tropical climates, superyacht Hemisphere boasts a spacious flybridge with jacuzzi, sunpads and shaded dining along with a vast indoor/outdoor living area on the main deck. The relaxed and elegant interior by Michael Leach Designs is the epitome of contemporary chic and the yacht’s exceptional volume offers a high degree of luxury. The yachts dark wood floors are offset by a soothing neutral colour palette with countless customised touches such as seventeen different types of granite and sixteen leather finishes, creating an ‘island living meets deluxe Pacific Rim ambience’.

Sailing yacht Hemispheres is able to accommodate 12 charter guests in 5 comfortable, luxurious ensuite cabins and the yacht will operate with a professional crew of 8.

Megayacht Hemisphere’s inaugural season this summer will be enjoyed by her owners in the Mediterranean however she will be available for luxury yacht charters this winter in the Caribbean with charter rates starting at EUR 175,000 per week. Following this, she will transit the Panama Canal into the South Pacific for summer 2012. Conceptualised and built for cruising the tropics, the Hemisphere yacht is certain to set a new benchmark for luxury charters in some of the most exotic locations on the planet.

Hemisphere will make her debut at the Monaco Yacht Show 2011 in September, showcased by Pendennis. Contact the CharterWorld team here if you are intersted in chartering the luxury cat Hemisphere.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA (USA) – The Nav-Tracker GPS tracking system from boat security systems supplier Global Ocean Security Technologies (GOST – formerly Paradox Marine) will be used to monitor the progress of Three Little Birds, a Lagoon 500 catamaran, on a unique three-year circumnavigation.

Boat captain Scott Leonard and his family (wife Mandi, sons Griffin, Jake and Luke) will set sail in July and throughout the voyage, Scott plans to become “The Mobile CEO” – running his multi-million dollar financial services firm while sailing around the world on his 50 foot yacht.

“With so many people interested in following the progress of our trip, having GOST’s Nav-Tracker GPS tracking system on our boat is critical to providing up to date, fully automated location information. Add to that the peace of mind provided with the geofence when we have to leave the boat in remote locations to return home for work,” said Scott Leonard.

The GOST Nav-Tracker GPS Tracking System

The GOST Nav-Tracker GPS Tracking System

GOST Nav-Tracker can be used to track a vessel (or an entire fleet) from anywhere in the world with an internet connection. A boat’s precise voyage and exact location can be viewed on Google Earth and as new reports come in from the Nav-Tracker, they are automatically updated to the site.

GPS NAV TRACKER

GPS NAV TRACKER

“With Nav-Tracker installed aboard Three Little Birds, we have an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the unique vessel tracking and monitoring capabilities of our system around the world,” said GOST President Jay Keenan.

When a Nav-Tracker transmitter is mounted on a vessel vessel and armed, a wireless ‘geo-fence’ with a 500-meter radius is created. If a boat is moved outside of this fence, Nav-Tracker uses Inmarsat based GPS satellite technology to monitor a boat’s location and notify up to ten people by email and/or text message every 2 minutes with the exact latitude/longitude, speed and heading of the vessel.

The new 58’ trawler catamaran design by Stirling Design International and Alu Marine shipyard

April 20, 2011

The new 58’ trawler catamaran design is the outcome of a six months’ study between Stirling Design International design office and Alu Marine shipyard. In the eyes of the existing trawlers on the market, it is clear that the choice between large living spaces, speed performance, comfort, and availability of berths is a real problem for many owners. Many power catamarans just arrived on the market. But their impressive width, exceeding 8 meters, forced them to use their boat for charter use in the Caribbean or far from Mediterranean coasts. Of course there are many monohull trawlers that can seduce by their speed performance, but these boats do not offer the same stability and the same space on board as this trawler 58.

Starting from a blank page, Stirling Design designed an elegant boat where outdoor lounge, saloon, galley and owner cabin are at the same level, providing optimal comfort. The internal wheelhouse, slightly raised, is located in “the heart of space”, providing an important lighting to the entire saloon, and natural ventilation thanks to the large windows of the wheelhouse and the opening at side in the saloon.

OPTIMAL SIZE

With only 5.90 meters/19’4’’ wide, this catamaran can find a mooring place in most marinas and anchorages.

COMFORTABLE AND FUNCTIONAL LAYOUTS

This trawler offers, in addition to the owner cabin, three large double cabins in her hulls. In addition, a crew cabin is fitted to the front of the portside hull with a dedicated bathroom. The interior helmsman console gives a direct access to the flybridge with the tender on the aft part. The modern accommodation can be customized according to the customers’ requests.

Sailing yacht Aeroyacht 110 – A mega catamaran to be built by Sunreef Yachts

The yacht is designed by Gregor Tarjan founder of the international renowned multihull brokerage company Aeroyacht Ltd in conjunction with Morrelli & Melvin. The agreement gives the Polish shipyard Sunreef rights to build this yacht and market it as Aeroyacht 110 by Sunreef Yachts. The shipyard has already been approached by a client interested in this spectacular design, and the first sale is expected to follow soon.

The partnership agreement between Sunreef Yachts and Gregor Tarjan also includes a dealership agreement giving Aeroyacht Ltd non-exclusive rights to sell all Sunreef yacht models in the USA and to his worldwide customer base.

“His deep understanding of the luxury catamaran concept and all its assets makes Gregor Tarjan the perfect advocate of the Sunreef Yachts brand overseas. We are delighted to be able to build his super multihull project in Poland. We are also working on selling a couple of Sunreef catamarans to his clients,” says Maciej Stompor, Sunreef’s Sales Director.

The Aeroyacht 110 catamaran is a spectacular multihull indeed. She is a high-performance sailing superyacht with eco-friendly features including wind and wave generators and solar panels that allow the yacht to run silently. The mega-catamaran’s lightweight composite structure considerably reduces fuel consumption.

The yacht defines the “next generation” of high-performance sailing vessels and perfectly fits Sunreef’s new range of fast cats called ULTIMATE. With high average speeds, similar to an offshore powerboat, she will have an unlimited operating radius under sail and a range exceeding 2800 nautical miles under power. The generous 44′ beam provides zero heel while under way and no roll at anchor. Guests can enjoy an extremely spacious saloon rivalling those of 300 feet motor yachts. As an extra option, the yacht can even be equipped with a personal exploration aeroplane – the 2 seat Icon-A5 amphibian , launched and retrieved from a hydraulic platform on the aft deck.
